A Daughter of the "Enemy of the People" by Valery Dunaevsky Pdf

The title of my book A Daughter of the 'Enemy of the People' reflects a situation of the 1930's in the USSR when in the height of the Stalin purges millions of the innocent people were arrested and labeled 'The Enemies of the people.' My maternal grandfather happened to be one of the hapless victims of that witch hunt. In the book I am addressing the related events of the Stalin repressions, WWII, Holocaust, emigration from the USSR and immigration to the USA. The book is dedicated to my late mother, 19202010, and her life is shown in connection with mine and some of my other relatives. Particularly I am outlining there my maternal grandmother who was a free lance playwright and poetess. Also, the book gave me an opportunity to highlight the image of my maternal uncle Vitold Shmulian. He was a mathematics doctor who served as an artillery officer in the Soviet Army, and despite the hardship of war he was able to continue his mathematical studies. And literally from the trenches of war he sent his treatises back into the USSR academy of science. He was killed at the liberation of Warsaw. He is still well known in the mathematical circles. His name could be found in the Internet. (His name can also be found under the title The theorem of Krein-Shmulian). My mother was from Odessa and father was from Rostov-on -Don where they lived before the war. In October of 1941 they were able to escape the approaching German army. Rostov was taken by the Germans on Nov. 21 but in few days it was recaptured by the Soviet Army. During their stay in Rostov, the Nazis immediately initiated anti-Jewish actions, but they were small in scale. In July of 1942 Rostov fell to Germans the second time. At that time the mass atrocities were committed against Jewish population and against many other segments of civil population and prisoners of war. My book captures some of these events. One of the main goals of the book is to show interesting and good people (who happened to be my relatives) and who could serve as role models for younger generation.

An Enemy of the People by Henrik Ibsen Pdf

"An Enemy of the People" by Henrik Ibsen is a powerful drama that explores themes of truth, integrity, and the conflict between individual conscience and societal expectations. Set in a small Norwegian town, the play follows Dr. Thomas Stockmann, a respected physician who discovers that the town's popular public baths are contaminated. Despite his efforts to expose the truth and protect public health, Dr. Stockmann faces opposition from local authorities, businessmen, and even members of his own family who are more concerned with their reputations and financial interests. As the town turns against him, Dr. Stockmann becomes increasingly isolated, grappling with questions of morality and the consequences of speaking truth to power. With its searing social critique and psychological depth, "An Enemy of the People" remains a relevant and thought-provoking exploration of the challenges faced by individuals who dare to challenge the status quo. Ibsen's masterful portrayal of human nature and societal dynamics continues to resonate with audiences, reminding us of the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of adversity.

Stalin by Edvard Radzinsky Pdf

From the author of The Last Tsar, the first full-scale life of Stalin to have what no previous biography has fully obtained: the facts. Granted privileged access to Russia's secret archives, Edvard Radzinsky paints a picture of the Soviet strongman as more calculating, ruthless, and blood-crazed than has ever been described or imagined. Stalin was a man for whom power was all, terror a useful weapon, and deceit a constant companion. As Radzinsky narrates the high drama of Stalin's epic quest for domination-first within the Communist Party, then over the Soviet Union and the world-he uncovers the startling truth about this most enigmatic of historical figures. Only now, in the post-Soviet era, can what was suppressed be told: Stalin's long-denied involvement with terrorism as a young revolutionary; the crucial importance of his misunderstood, behind-the-scenes role during the October Revolution; his often hostile relationship with Lenin; the details of his organization of terror, culminating in the infamous show trials of the 1930s; his secret dealings with Hitler, and how they backfired; and the horrifying plans he was making before his death to send the Soviet Union's Jews to concentration camps-tantamount to a potential second Holocaust. Radzinsky also takes an intimate look at Stalin's private life, marked by his turbulent relationship with his wife Nadezhda, and recreates the circumstances that led to her suicide. As he did in The Last Tsar, Radzinsky thrillingly brings the past to life. The Kremlin intrigues, the ceaseless round of double-dealing and back-stabbing, the private worlds of the Soviet Empire's ruling class-all become, in Radzinsky's hands, as gripping and powerful as the great Russian sagas. And the riddle of that most cold-blooded of leaders, a man for whom nothing was sacred in his pursuit of absolute might--and perhaps the greatest mass murderer in Western history--is solved.

Her mother, the formidable Blade, has sent her halfway around the world to investigate clues to the locations of Sanctuary and the City of the Sisters. The catch? Playing somebody’s husband isn’t a new cover for Drew Martin, but it’s the first time he’s partnered a woman he’s got the hots for. Unfortunately, Jerusha treats him like her kid brother, and when she’s not, she’s instituted a strictly hands-off policy. One kiss wouldn’t kill her, would it? Someone is tailing them, the Shadow Enemy turns up in the unlikeliest of places, and an ancient Daughter sets her cap for Drew, leaving him wondering what could possibly go wrong next.

The Ambassador's Daughter by Pam Jenoff Pdf

Paris, 1919. The world's leaders have gathered to rebuild from the ashes of the Great War. But for one woman, the City of Light harbors dark secrets and dangerous liaisons, for which many could pay dearly. Brought to the peace conference by her father, a German diplomat, Margot Rosenthal initially resents being trapped in the congested French capital, where she is still looked upon as the enemy. But as she contemplates returning to Berlin and a life with Stefan, the wounded fiancé she hardly knows anymore, she decides that being in Paris is not so bad after all. Bored and torn between duty and the desire to be free, Margot strikes up unlikely alliances: with Krysia, an accomplished musician with radical acquaintances and a secret to protect; and with Georg, the handsome, damaged naval officer who gives Margot a job—and also a reason to question everything she thought she knew about where her true loyalties should lie. Against the backdrop of one of the most significant events of the century, a delicate web of lies obscures the line between the casualties of war and of the heart, making trust a luxury that no one can afford.

Photography and Political Repressions in Stalin’s Russia by Denis Skopin Pdf

This book is devoted to the phenomenon of removal of people declared "public enemies" from group photographs in Stalin’s Russia. The book is based on long-term empirical research in Russian archives and includes 57 photographs that are exceptional in terms of historical interest: all these images bear traces of editing in the form of various marks, such as blacking-out, excisions or scratches. The illustrative materials also include a group of photographs with inscriptions left by officers of Stalin’s secret police, the NKVD. To approach this extensive visual material, Denis Skopin draws on a wealth of Stalin-era written sources: memoirs, diaries and official documents. He argues that this kind of political iconoclasm cannot be confused with censorship nor vandalism. The practice in question is more harrowing and morally twisted, for in most cases the photos were defaced by those who were part of victim’s intimate circle: his/her colleagues, friends or even close family members. The book will be of interest to scholars working in history of photography, art history, visual culture, Russian studies and Russian history and politics.

Say Yes by Lucy Varna Pdf

Serafina Noland has a good life, a son she adores, a supportive family, and a successful career. The one thing she doesn’t have is a significant other, a partner to help her raise her son, Petey, someone to love her through thick and thin. Loneliness is often her companion, but she’s resigned herself to that and learned to be thankful for the life she and Petey have carved out in their little corner of the Appalachian foothills. While on vacation, she walks onto a Carolina beach and meets sinfully sexy businessman Levi Ewart. He’s thoughtful and kind and one of the most handsome men she’s ever met. The problem is he’s also entirely too young for her, and so far above her in every way possible, her head spins. What can a man like that possibly see in little ol’ her? How can she ever trust him not to walk out on her, the way Petey’s father did nearly nine years before? Sera’s age is never a problem for Levi. His own mother is centuries older than his father, and he’s witnessed dozens of couples in similar situations find their happily ever afters. He opens his heart to the reserved Sera and falls hard and fast for her and her son, but his secrets aren’t the only things standing in the way of true love. Sera’s past is a giant blight on their relationship, eating away at the core of their happiness, and Levi’s love may not be enough to overcome her doubts. Getting her to say yes to the future he wants to build with her may be the hardest task he’s ever undertaken, and the riskiest venture of his life.
