Emancipation Day by Natasha L. Henry-Dixon Pdf

When the passage of the Abolition of Slavery Act, effective August 1, 1834, ushered in the end of slavery throughout the British Empire, people of the African descent celebrated their newfound freedom. Now African-American fugitive slaves, free black immigrants, and the few remaining enslaved Africans could live unfettered live in Canada – a reality worthy of celebration. This new, well-researched book provides insight into the creation, development, and evolution of a distinct African-Canadian tradition through descriptive historical accounts and appealing images. The social, cultural, political, and educational practices of Emanipation Day festivities across Canada are explored, with emphasis on Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, and British Columbia. "Emancipation is not only a word in the dictionary, but an action to liberate one’s destiny. This outstanding book is superb in the interpretation of "the power of freedom" in one’s heart and mind – moving from 1834 to present." – Dr. Henry Bishop, Black Cultural Centre, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

One Day in August by David O'Keefe Pdf

One of the most important Canadian non-fiction books we have published: the groundbreaking, thrilling, ultra-secret story behind one of WWII's most enduring mysteries, which fundamentally changes our understanding of this sorrowful event in Canada's past. The Dieppe Raid--the darkest day in Canadian military history--has been one of the most perplexing mysteries of WWII, when almost 4,000 Canadian amphibious troops stormed the small French port town, only to be ambushed by the waiting Germans, slaughtered, wounded or captured. This catastrophe, coupled with the 7 decades-long mystery surrounding the reason for the operation, left a legacy of bitterness and recriminations and controversial charges ranging from incompetence to conspiracy. O'Keefe's detective-like research over 15 years in the Intelligence archives of 5 countries now reveals that it was a vitally secret "pinch raid," organized by British Naval Intelligence and the Joint Intelligence Committee. The mission: under cover of a raid to secretly steal the German code books that would unlock the Enigma cipher machine that held the key to the German High Command's plans. One of the key figures behind the mission, along with Mountbatten and Churchill, was Commander Ian Fleming, waiting in a ship off-shore for the code books that might have saved countless lives and shortened the war by some years.

D-Day by Lance Goddard Pdf

Survivors. Vets. Comrades. A single day changed their lives forever. From the producer of the documentary Victory from Above, Lance Goddard's D-Day, Juno Beach: Canada's 24 Hours of Destiny is a montage of first-hand accounts, memories, and a pictorial archive of that day, sixty years ago. It captures all of the pride, patriotism, and collective will of Canadians who served and endured the horrific events of that day for a greater cause - for freedom, to defeat Hitler, to liberate Europe. From the beginning, at 0000 hours, to the end, 24 hours later, the voices of over thirty veterans unravel the battle with recollections, tactical details, and, often, self-effacing humour - but always at the very heart of Goddard's D-Day: Juno Beach, Canada's 24 Hours of Destiny, the message, sixty years later, is clear... lest we forget.

Remembrance Day in Canada by David James Pallister Pdf

Since the beginning of the first Remembrance Day in 1919, Canadians have come together from all across the country; from west to east, from north to south and across different cultures and ages, to acknowledge the sacrifices of the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces. In this book, your primary aged child will learn: - Many of the symbols associated with Remembrance Day. - How we honour soldiers and veterans on Remembrance Day. - How we honour soldiers and veterans throughout the year. This book is for teaching younger children about Remembrance Day and can be used as a reference tool for Remembrance Day ceremonies at elementary schools. Mr. Pallister, in his own experience, could find very few books about Remembrance Day that explain it in words that young children understand. He decided to re-create his 'Symbols of Remembrance Day' assembly presentation into a book to help elementary teachers teach their students about Remembrance Day.

Juno Beach by Mark Zuehlke Pdf

On June 6, 1944 the greatest armada in history stood off Normandy and the largest amphibious invasion ever began as 107,000 men aboard 6,000 ships pressed toward the coast. Among this number were 18,000 Canadians, who were to land on a five-mile long stretch of rocky ledges fronted by a wide expanse of sand. Code named Juno Beach. Here, sheltered inside concrete bunkers and deep trenches, hundreds of German soldiers waited to strike the first assault wave with some ninety 88-millimetre guns, fifty mortars, and four hundred machineguns. A four-foot-high sea wall ran across the breadth of the beach and extending from it into the surf itself were ranks of tangled barbed wire, tank and vessel obstacles, and a maze of mines. Of the five Allied forces landing that day, they were scheduled to be the last to reach the sand. Juno was also the most exposed beach, their day’s objectives eleven miles inland were farther away than any others, and the opposition awaiting them was believed greater than that facing any other force. At battle's end one out of every six Canadians in the invasion force was either dead or wounded. Yet their grip on Juno Beach was firm.
