A Decade of Industrial Relations Research, 1946-1956 (Classic Reprint) by NEIL W. CHAMBERLAIN Pdf

Excerpt from A Decade of Industrial Relations Research, 1946-1956 In 1948, in the American Economic Association's Survey of Con temporary Economics, Lloyd Reynolds authored a 33-page chapter summarizing contributions to the state of knowledge in the field of labor economics and, to a lesser extent, industrial relations since the early thirties. It was somehow appropriate that during his term as president of the Industrial Relations Research Association that organization should have initiated a survey of the research con tributions to this field in the postwar decade. Although it was originally intended that this survey should be compressed within a single volume, it soon became apparent that if the numerous subdivisions of the field were to be treated ade quately, two volumes would be needed. This is the first volume. The second will appear at a later date, under' different editorial super vision. The only basis for the selection of the six areas here surveyed is that a considerable amount of research has been done in each. They have not been chosen for review because they are logically related, nor has any effort been made to achieve a symmetry of coverage. Thus Union Government and Union Leadership, our Chapter One, has not been balanced by a comparable chapter on business be cause not so much relevant research has been done on this topic. By the time of the second volume it is possible that a more signi ficant chapter can be written on this aspect of industrial relations. Conflict Management and Industrial Relations by G.B.J. Bomers,R.B. Peterson Pdf

This volume contains a selection of the most notable contributions delivered at the research conference "Industrial Relations and Conflict Management: Different Ways of Managing Conflict," which was hosted by the Nether lands School of Business in July 1980. Held at Nijenrode Castle, the confer ence brought together an international gathering of thirty-five of the most distinguished scholars in these fields to present research papers and to en gage in round-table discussions. One of the principal aims of the conference was to explore cross-links and differences between the areas of conflict management and industrial relations in an international context. The book opens with a chapter by George Strauss, who provides an in troduction to and an overall view of the subject matter covered. The chap ters that follow in Part I deal with differing conflict conditions and defini tions and their implications for managing conflict. The manifestations of conflict and different modes of conflict management are the subject of the chapters in Part II. In Part III, three empirical studies of conflict are dis cussed. Part IV is concerned with comparative industrial relations, while value issues and conflict are the focus of Part V. Finally, in the Epilogue the participant feedback regarding the conference is reviewed.

The Elgar Companion to the Chicago School of Economics by Ross B. Emmett Pdf

Many know the Chicago School of Economics and its association with Milton Friedman, George Stigler, Ronald Coase and Gary Becker. But few know the School's history and the full scope of its scholarship. In this Companion, leading scholars examine its history and key figures, as well as provide surveys of the School's contributions to central aspects of economics, including: price theory, monetary theory, labor and economic history. The volume examines the School's traditions of applied welfare theory and law and economics while providing a glimpse into emerging research on Chicago's role in the development of neoliberalism. A companion in the true sense of the word, this volume surveys a wide body of Chicago economic studies and guides readers carefully through each. The Companion offers biographies of leading Chicago economists and evaluations of the School's connection to approaches to economics that draw from and complement the School, including the Virginia School and the work of Armen Alchian and Edward Lazear. Moreover, this book is a first in many respects as it analyzes the interconnections of the Chicago School's theory, methodology, and policy, and considers by what means and ideas the School's policy framework is driven. The breadth and depth of the insights presented here will appeal especially to students and scholars of economics and historians interested in economics, social science and applied public policy.

The Union and Its Members by Julian Barling,Clive Fullagar,E. Kevin Kelloway,K. Kevin Kelloway Pdf

This work explores three key topics in social psychology: the manner in which labor unions shape organizational behavior, a relationship which has been effectively ignored in the literature; the organization of the union itself, a fascinating test case for the organizational psychologist; and the way in which theories and methods of organizational psychology may assist labor organizations in achieving their goals. Since the union maintains unique characteristics of democracy, conflict, and voluntary participation within a larger organization, the authors offer a detailed study of a union's dynamics, including demographic and personality predictors of membership, voting behavior, union commitment and loyalty, the nature of participation, leadership styles, collective bargaining, among other topics. This is the first book to be published in the new Industrial/Organizational Psychology Series. It will be of interest to not only industrial/organizational psychologists in industry, academia, and private and public organizations, but to graduate students in psychology departments and business schools, and to academics and professionals in business and management studying industrial relations.

The Institutionalist Tradition in Labor Economics by Dell P. Champlin,Janet T. Knoedler Pdf

While there are many economists in schools, government, unions, and non-profit organizations working in the institutionalst tradition, there has been no book that describes this tradition -- until now. Editors Champlin and Knoedler have brought together prominent labor economists, highly respected institutional economists, and newer scholars working on such compelling issues as immigration, wage discrimination, and living wages. Their essays portray the institutionalist tradition in labor as it exists today as well as its historical and theoretical origins. The result is a major contribution to the literature of labor economics, institutionalist economics, and the history of economic thought.

Persistent Inequalities by Howard Botwinick Pdf

In contrast to orthodox theory, Howard Botwinick uses a classical Marxist analysis of real capitalist competition to show that substantial patterns of wage disparity among similar workers can persist despite high levels of competition in both capital and labor markets.
