A Dictionary of Botanical Terms (Classic Reprint) by A. A. Crozier Pdf

Excerpt from A Dictionary of Botanical Terms It is now nearly twenty years since an English dictionary of botanical terms was published, and the development of botany during that time has brought into use many new terms and led to the abandonment of some of those which were formerly employed. The present work, though larger than any of its predecessors, is therefore wanting in certain terms which are found in the earlier botanical dictionaries. A few obsolete terms, however, which occur in standard botanical literature are retained and marked as such. The scope of this dictionary is nearly the same as that of its predecessors, except that it is broader on the side of agriculture and horticulture, as it aims to include all technical terms applied to plants both by botanists and others. Very many of the newer terms are from the German botanists, to whom we owe by far the greater part of modern structural and physiological botany. These terms, particularly, include an unfortunately large number of synonyms, which seem to be a necessary result of active research by independent workers in the same fields. With few exceptions, no definition is repeated, all approved synonyms being brought together under one term. Where a choice existed this has permitted the preferable term alone to be defined. A Dictionary of English Plant-Names (Classic Reprint) by James Britten Pdf

Excerpt from A Dictionary of English Plant-Names Science cannot, at present, afford to throw hard words at pro vincialisms. Too often, in her nomenclature, has she failed to interpret Nature; too often given us only the skeleton leaf instead of the flower. A long list of provincialisms might be given, where by a word a whole train of associations is aroused, and the close relationship of all things shown Many of our most expressive terms are fast dying out, as schools are built, and schoolmasters increase, so will the old words perish in the struggle with the new. A Glossary of Botanic Terms by Benjamin Daydon Jackson Pdf

Excerpt from A Glossary of Botanic Terms: With Their Derivation and Accent Bundle. Greek is quoted in the original characters, Latin in italic, or where otherwise it would be doubtful, it is indicated; this is further explained on the page facing page 1 of the Glossary the use of small capitals refers the reader to the word so printed for a definition of the term, or to a correlative term. The Appendixes hardly need any detailed explanation; it will be seen that the Bibliography is a selected list of works chiefly in alphabetic form, arranged chronologically. General dictionaries, and large works in which technical terms form only a small pro portion of the whole, have been omitted. The progress of the work through the press has occupied twelve months; advantage has been taken of this to record new terms which have been published during that time, as well as those con tributed by friends from obscure sources, some previously rejected, and a few which had been overlooked many in the last category are directly due to the defective indexes in certain standard works. N o attempt has been made to bring the book beyond the date of 1st January 1900, but I have done my best to include all valid terms up to the first day of this year. Dictionary of Botanical Equivalents by Ernst Artschwager Pdf

Excerpt from Dictionary of Botanical Equivalents: French-English, German-English French and German terms of Latin or Greek origin have been omitted whenever the English equivalent would practically have been only a repetition. For such terms as are included in this dictionary the exact English equivalents have been sought. In numerous instances, however, the lack of such has made it necessary to furnish an explanation of the foreign term rather than a translation. The list of plant names includes important economic plants, farm weeds, and the Latin equivalents for the larger plant groups. The editors, so far from attempting a complete compilation of French and German botanical terms, have aimed only at the production of a practical handbook, accurate within the limits set for it. To make it possible for owners of the volume to amplify the list of terms and names given, the publishers have inter leaved blank pages, and it is hoped that this will prove valuable for those who use the book. A Dictionary of American Plant Names (Classic Reprint) by Willard Nelson Clute Pdf

Excerpt from A Dictionary of American Plant Names The book naturally divides into two parts, the first consisting of the vernacular names arranged under their proper genus and species, and the second a cross referenced index to the first list. The genera in each family and the species in each genus are arranged alphabetically, but in an endeavor to indicate the best known vernacular name as well as to distinguish those that are obsolete or misapplied it was found impracticable to arrange the names under each species alphabetically. The plan has been to print the most commonly used name in small capitals, while the oth ers, in ordinary type, follow somewhat the order of their importance. In the rare cases in which a given plant is recognized by a different name in different parts of its range, both names are printed in small capitals. It has often been a matter of nice distinc tion to decide which of two names is more commonly used. Here the author has been obliged to rely on his own judgment. He has often followed the usage of botanical manuals but often, also, he has used names which in his experience appear to have a wider circulation. Ln auv case. The next name that might be regarded as entitled to first place follows immediately after the other, so that both will be found together. Obsolete names are set off from the others by a dash and those regarded as misapplied are placed in paren thesis. Paxton's Botanical Dictionary by Samuel Hereman Pdf

Excerpt from Paxton's Botanical Dictionary: Comprising the Names, History, and Culture of All Plants Known in Britain; With a Full Explanation of Technical Terms Respecting the number of scientific terms herein explained, we may be allowed to say that no other popular glossary contains such a copious collection. Their explication is in exact accordance with the views of the most learned botanists, merely being reduced to dimensions which best comport with simplicity and conciseness. Considering the immense field which this volume occupies, the accentuation of generic, specific, and all purely botanical names that are not Anglicised, must be regarded as a highly valuable characteristic. By the extreme perspicuity of the marks employed, their full and universal adaptation, and the fact that they were all supplied by the first botanist in England, (dr. Lindley, ) the botanic student or other assiduous examiner will here meet with a fund of accurate instruction in this particular, to which only the most laboured and extremely expensive publication can at all pretend. It might be assumed that the signs used are sufficiently common to require no comment but, for the benefit of the less informed, we shall just show the manner in which they apply. In the first place, the vowel in each word over which the primary accent occurs, sustains all the emphasis of the syllabic pronunciation, independently of the real nature of the sign. Further, the employment of the long quantity or the short quantity simply denotes that the vowel above which they are placed is to be sounded long and broadly, or short and abruptly. To vary our expression, the short vowel is perpetually pronounced in conjunction with the next consonant, and the long one has its own distinct and final sound, as if the letter were doubled, but the voice rested on each. In all cases when the last syllable but one is marked long the accent falls on that syllable; and when the last syllable but one is marked short the accent falls on the last syllable but two. Thus Romani'is would be accented Romanus, and tricolor would be accented tricolor, although the i on which the accent is placed is short. It is extremely important to bear this in mind.
