An evidence of this is the present style of examination papers for admission to colleges and schools. Algebra is not an end in Mathematics, but a means only. Properly considered, Algebra is largely a multiplication-table to be used in other mathematical work. It is not sufficient, then, that the subject be understood: the processes must be readily handled. An unlimited variety of examples is needed to disengage the principle of the process from the individual example, and to ensure the proper application of the principle every time.
