A Laboratory Course in Physics for Secondary Schools by Robert Andrews Millikan Pdf

Excerpt from A Laboratory Course in Physics for Secondary Schools Although laboratory work is now generally recognized as an indispensable part of any adequate course in elementary physics, it is nevertheless a lamentable fact that there are still some schools in which it is not attempted at all, while there are others in which, despite the most expensive equipment, the laboratory fails, on the whole, either to interest or instruct. Both of these conditions are probably attributable to one and the same cause. In our modern glorification of the laboratory method, particularly of exact, quantitative measurements, and in our haste to get away from the superficial, descriptive physics of thirty years ago, some of us have undoubtedly gone so far as to defeat our own aims. We have made the laboratory an impossibility in schools which are financially weak, because we have made its expense prohibitive; and we have made it a disappointment in other schools which are financially strong, because in our eagerness to show our students exactly how much we have neglected to show them how and why. In short, the gravest danger which threatens the efficiency of the high-school laboratory to-day is the danger which arises from the creeping over of the methods and the instruments of research and specialization from the university into the high school, where they have absolutely no place, - the danger that principles shall be lost sight of in the bewildering details of refined methods and refined instruments. A First Course in Physics by Robert Andrews Millikan Pdf

Excerpt from A First Course in Physics The course presented in this book, and in the List of Laboratory Experiments, which is published in a separate volume, has grown out of the actual needs of the elementary work in physics in the University of Chicago, particularly in the University High School of the School of Education and the affiliated secondary schools. Its most characteristic features have been on trial for three or four years in more than a score of different secondary schools in various parts of the country. The books represent primarily an attempt to give concrete expression to a rapidly spreading movement to make high-school physics, to a less extent than it has been in the past, either a condensed reproduction of college physics, or a mathematical and mechanical introduction to technical science, and to a greater extent than it has heretofore been, a simple and immediate presentation, in language which the student already understands, of the hows and whys of the physical world in which he lives. A second aim has been to develop a course in which the laboratory and class-room phases of elementary instruction in physics are carefully differentiated and, at the same time, closely correlated. It is hoped that something may thus be done toward remedying the inadequacy which still exists in the laboratory instruction of many of the smaller schools. A very carefully selected and tested list of distinctively class-room demonstrations will be found to run through the book in fine print, while footnotes indicate the location and nature of the laboratory exercises which should be inserted. For the sake of definiteness and simplicity the references are made simply to the authors manual, though the exercises may be taken from any good laboratory text. Physics 1922 – 1941 by Sam Stuart Pdf

Physics presents Nobel Lectures on physics from the period of 1922 to 1941. This book is organized into 18 parts encompassing 36 chapters that cover various Nobel physics subjects. The first parts explore the advances in understanding the atom structure, experimental studies of electrons, X-ray spectra of the atomic structure, kinetic energy of free electrons, and discontinuous structure of matter. These topics are followed by discussions on the laws governing the thermionic phenomena, wave nature of electron, light molecular scattering, the development of quantum mechanics, properties of neutrons, and the properties and production of positrons. The remaining parts are devoted to electronic waves, neutron's artificial radioactivity, and the evolution of cyclotron. Physicists will find this book invaluable.

How We Teach Science - What′s Changed, and Why It Matters by John L. Rudolph Pdf

The science taught in high schools-Newton's theory of universal gravitation, basic structure of the atom, cell division, DNA replication-is accepted as the way nature works. What is puzzling is how this precisely specified knowledge could come from an intellectual process-the scientific method-that has been incredibly difficult to describe or characterize with any precision. Philosophers, sociologists, and scientists have weighed in on how science operates without arriving at any consensus. Despite this confusion, the scientific method has been one of the highest priorities of science teaching in the United States over the past 150 years. Everyone agrees that high school students and the public more generally should understand the process of science, if only we could determine exactly what it is. From the rise of the laboratory method in the late nineteenth century, through the "five step" method, to the present day, John Rudolph tracks the changing attitudes, methods, and impacts of science education. Of particular interest is the interplay between various stakeholders: students, school systems, government bodies, the professional science community, and broader culture itself. Rudolph demonstrates specifically how the changing depictions of the processes of science have been bent to different social purposes in various historical periods. In some eras, learning about the process of science was thought to contribute to the intellectual and moral improvement of the individual, while in others it was seen as a way to minimize public involvement (or interference) in institutional science. Rudolph ultimately shows that how we teach the methodologies of science matters a great deal, especially in our current era, where the legitimacy of science is increasingly under attack.--
