The Graceful Exit by Mary C. Lindberg Pdf
Pastors say goodbye to congregations. Sometimes their goodbyes are timely and sweet; sometimes they are jarring and painful. But as they leave, they face a unique journey of grief, one shaped by their role. They face both the outward grief of leaving people behind and the inward grief of leaving an identity behind. In The Graceful Exit, Lutheran pastor Mary Lindberg shares insights from her experience of ending her service to a congregation, as well as wisdom from other pastors who have changed their life work. Lindberg invites readers to pull apart the strands of self and role, individual and community; confront regrets, confusion, and dislocation; and figure out where and who God is at this juncture in their lives. She offers the book she wishes someone had handed her about finding a new church home, about getting a life, about relating to the colleagues who stayed. She reflects on how to be a pastor in a non-pastoral role, how to find community, and how to be graceful in the midst of the awkward unknown. Lindberg acknowledges that as pastors leave congregations, they have to discern how to wrap up their ministry and get out the door without regrets. She recognizes that most pastors will struggle with the spiritual themes of fulfillment, surrender, community, legacy, and separation. But she also believes pastors can face these challenges together. The Graceful Exit invites them into a community of healing and shows them that God walks with them to a new place, even as God keeps on loving the place they have left.

Interactive Lecturing by Elizabeth F. Barkley,Claire H. Major Pdf
Tips and techniques to build interactive learning into lecture classes Have you ever looked out across your students only to find them staring at their computers or smartphones rather than listening attentively to you? Have you ever wondered what you could do to encourage students to resist distractions and focus on the information you are presenting? Have you ever wished you could help students become active learners as they listen to you lecture? Interactive Lecturing is designed to help faculty members more effectively lecture. This practical resource addresses such pertinent questions as, “How can lecture presentations be more engaging?” “How can we help students learn actively during lecture instead of just sitting and passively listening the entire time?” Renowned authors Elizabeth F. Barkley and Claire H. Major provide practical tips on creating and delivering engaging lectures as well as concrete techniques to help teachers ensure students are active and fully engaged participants in the learning process before, during, and after lecture presentations. Research shows that most college faculty still rely predominantly on traditional lectures as their preferred teaching technique. However, research also underscores the fact that more students fail lecture-based courses than classes with active learning components. Interactive Lecturing combines engaging presentation tips with active learning techniques specifically chosen to help students learn as they listen to a lecture. It is a proven teaching and learning strategy that can be readily incorporated into every teacher’s methods. In addition to providing a synthesis of relevant, contemporary research and theory on lecturing as it relates to teaching and learning, this book features 53 tips on how to deliver engaging presentations and 32 techniques you can assign students to do to support their learning during your lecture. The tips and techniques can be used across instructional methods and academic disciplines both onsite (including small lectures and large lecture halls) as well as in online courses. This book is a focused, up-to-date resource that draws on collective wisdom from scholarship and practice. It will become a well-used and welcome addition for everyone dedicated to effective teaching in higher education.

Schubert's Winter Journey by Ian Bostridge Pdf
Franz Schubert's Winterreise is at the same time one of the most powerful and one of the most enigmatic masterpieces in Western culture. In his new book, Schubert's Winter Journey: Anatomy of an Obsession, Ian Bostridge - one of the work's finest interpreters - focusses on the context, resonance and personal significance of a work which is possibly the greatest landmark in the history of Lieder. Drawing equally on his vast experience of performing this work (he has performed it more than a hundred times), on his musical knowledge and on his training as a scholar, Bostridge unpicks the enigmas and subtle meaning of each of the twenty-four songs to explore for us the world Schubert inhabited, bringing the work and its world alive for connoisseurs and new listeners alike. Originally intended to be sung to an intimate gathering, performances of Winterreise now pack the greatest concert halls around the world. Though not strictly a biography of Schubert, Schubert's Winter Journey succeeds in offering an unparalleled insight into the mind and work of the great composer. 'Usually great singers cannot explain what they do. Ian Bostridge can. Whether or not you know Schubert's 'Winter Journey', the book is gripping because it explains, in probing, simple words, how a doomed love is transformed into art.' Richard Sennett

THE NOVELS OF CHARLES DICKENS: A MODERNIZED COMPILATION by Charles Dickens Pdf
The English writer and social critic Charles Dickens was the pre-eminent novelist of the Victorian era. His books created great fictional characters and left permanent marks on literature, popular culture, and socio-political commentary. The novels feature evocative depictions of London life and strong themes of morality and redemption. Dickens first published many of them in serialized form in magazines – a practice aimed at engaging broad audiences and increasing anticipation for later instalments. The present book consists of 15 of the novels – compiled in one volume with modernized language for improved accessibility, readability, and understandability. The main goal has been to make the writings more engaging and vivid while sticking to the original tones and settings of the books. In "A Christmas Carol" (1843), the miserly old Ebenezer Scrooge receives four ghostly visitors on Christmas Eve who teach him the value of kindness, generosity, and the Christmas spirit. Dickens set "A Tale of Two Cities" (1859) against the backdrop of the French Revolution. The novel explores themes of resurrection, justice, and sacrifice through the lives of characters caught between Paris and London. "Great Expectations" (1860-1861) is the story of young Pip's journey from poor orphan to person of substance. The novel explores themes of wealth and poverty, love and rejection, as Pip eventually realizes what is valuable in life. In "Oliver Twist" (1837-1839), a young orphan navigates the grim underworld of Victorian London, confronting thieves and villains as he seeks a true family and a better life. "David Copperfield" (1849-1850) is a semi-autobiographical novel detailing the life and adventures of David Copperfield, from his troubled childhood to his eventual success as a writer, highlighting the importance of perseverance and personal integrity. "Barnaby Rudge" (1841) is a historical novel set against the backdrop of the anti-Catholic Gordon Riots of 1780. The focus is on the simple-minded Barnaby Rudge and the chaos that engulfs London. "Bleak House" (1852-1853) is a satire centered on a long-running legal case (Jarndyce and Jarndyce) and its impact on individuals. The narrative is rich in mystery and character study. "Dombey and Son" (1848) tells the story of a wealthy and proud businessperson who values his son as an heir to his fortune over his daughter. Redemption and familial love prevail in the end. Dickens set "Hard Times" (1854) in the fictional heavy industrial Coketown. The novel criticizes "utilitarian" philosophy and general material conditions in the town through the lens of particular individuals and their interwoven lives. "Little Dorrit" (1855-1857) tells the story of Amy Dorrit – born and raised in debtor's prison – and her impact on those around her. Dickens criticizes the British establishment and the injustices of the debtor's prison system. "Martin Chuzzlewit" (1843-1844) is a satirical novel exploring the theme of selfishness. It follows the fortunes and misfortunes of young Martin as he learns the value of being selfless. "Nicholas Nickleby" (1838-1839) describes the adventures of a man as he seeks to support his mother and sister after his father's death. He faces assorted villains but also finds allies in Victorian England. "Our Mutual Friend" (1864-1865) is Dickens' last completed novel. It examines the lives of several characters linked by a deceased man's fortune and explores themes of wealth, social class, and human nature. "The Old Curiosity Shop" (1840-1841), tells the story of Nell Trent and her grandfather after a vicious loan shark destroys their lives. It features various characters, hardships, and criticisms of Victorian society's treatment of the poor and vulnerable. Finally, “The Pickwick Papers” (1836-1837) is about the comedic journey of Mr. Samuel Pickwick and his friends as they travel around England to explore its unique customs, characters, and landscapes. The novel is full of whimsical adventures and satirical episodes.
