A Guide to the Reading of the Greek Tragedians by J. R. Major Pdf

Excerpt from A Guide to the Reading of the Greek Tragedians: Being a Series of Articles on the Greek Drama, Greek Metres, and the Canons of Criticism In this Manual it has been the object of the Editor to bring together, from various sources, information both interesting and useful to the Student on the several heads of the Greek Drama, Greek Metres, and Canons of Criticism. On the first head, extracts have been given from Bentleys Dissertation on Phalaris, as the chief authority for the age of Thespis and the origin of Tragedy and Comedy; care having been taken to divest them of such controversial allusions and digressions as might embarrass the reader in his investigations. These extracts are succeeded by others from various authors, on the Progress of the Drama, the History and comparative Merits of the principal Tragic and Comic Writers, and the Construction of the Greek Theatre. On Greek Metres, the Editor had prefixed an Introduction to his edition of the Hecuba of Euripides, which he had been frequently requested to publish in a separate form, for the purpose of reference in the reading of Greek Plays generally. This book is an advanced critical introduction to Greek tragedy. It is written specifically for the reader who does not know Greek and who may be unfamiliar with the context of the Athenian drama festival but who nevertheless wants to appreciate the plays in all their complexity. A Guide to Greek Tragedy by Lewis Campbell Pdf

Excerpt from A Guide to Greek Tragedy: For English Readers The present volume does not profess to be a repertory of facts and theories respecting the Greek Drama. For such results of learned and archæological research I would confidently refer the reader to Haigh's Attic Theatre, or, if a German scholar, to A. Müller's Bühnenalterthumer, and to the books there cited. My hope has been that by recording impressions made on myself by somewhat close and long-continued study of the originals, I might assist the reader of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, whether in Greek or English, to enter more completely into the spirit and intention of their works. Greek tragedy, as an interpretation of human life, contains much which the world cannot afford to lose. It carries an imperfect lesson relative to a transitional age, yet one that is of lasting import, and inseparable from the vehicle of dramatic art in which it is couched.
