A Guide to the Volunteer Training Corps 1914-1918 by Ray Westlake Pdf

In A Guide to the Volunteer Training Corps, Ray Westlake has provided for the first time records of many of these fascinating early home defence volunteer units; his main source of information being contemporary records. A short history of the Volunteer Training Corps has also been provided, together with a comprehensive listing of all Volunteer Regiments, Volunteer Battalions, Artillery, Engineer, Army Service Corps, Royal Army Medical Corps and Motor formations. This will be an essential reference book for all those researching the men who, being too old or too young to fight, voluntarily set aside their private time during the First World War for their King and Country. A regular question put to Ray Westlake during his fifty or more years writing and researching Britain's auxiliary forces has been, 'Where can I find a list giving details of the several Volunteer Training Corps units raised during the early months of the Great War?' True, the post-1915 years that saw the smaller companies merged into battalions, and later regiments, has been adequately covered in the several Volunteer Lists available. But what about the 'Citizens' corps, or the 'Fencibles', the 'Defence' organisations, the 'Village Guards'; those raised by shooting, cricket, golf or football clubs, or by railway companies, factories or athletes, businessmen or old school fellows? The answer, until now, has regrettably been there is none.

Identifying Cap Badges by Graham Bandy Pdf

This book is an invaluable ‘tool of the trade’ for anyone trying to identify or interpret photos. – Peter Hart, Military Historian Identifying Cap Badges is the book that has been missing from the bookshelves of family historians, military enthusiasts, and badge collectors alike. It is quite easy to find an erudite book on military cap badges, but you could spend hours, if not days, plodding through hundreds of pictures to find a match for the one you hold. Sometimes you may not find it at all! These learned badge collector's books have one major flaw; they are pictured and discussed in 'order of precedence', that is to say, from the earliest formed regiments to the latest, with separate sections on medical, engineers, cavalry, infantry, etc. This can be most confusing to those uninitiated into the 'dark arts' of military badges. Thus, if you do not know the name or 'original number' of your regiment in this order of precedence, you can be flummoxed! This, combined with all the different crowns, laurels, animals, mythological beasts and castles, can prove more than a little daunting, even to ex soldiers themselves! In this book you will find badges ordered by what is on the badge itself; be it a dragon, sphinx or castle, horse, lion or tiger. This is badge identification in minutes, rather than hours, with added information on dating badges and many comparison photographs alongside all the pictures of the badges. Added to these pictures are short histories of the regiments and 'family trees' plotting the antecedents of today's units.

Cornwall and Devon by Everett Sharp Pdf

The main theme of this book is an examination of part-time voluntary military service culture as it contrasts the counties of Cornwall and Devon with the rest of the UK from 1846 to 1916. There is an explanation of pre-war volunteers in the Militia and Yeomanry, the growth of civilian controlled ‘Rifle’ units plus reaction to the Boer War and the popularity of the then new Territorial Force. It finally enquires about any possible enthusiasm for full time service from 1914 up to the introduction of conscription in 1916.

Grandad's Army by Mike Osborne Pdf

In August 1914, on the outbreak of the First World War, there was enormous pressure on men to enlist in Kitchener's New Armies, supplementing the tiny regular army and Territorial Force. This pressure was intense, and posters, the entreaties of local worthies, and an apparently indiscriminate scattering of white feathers, all exacerbated masculine sensitivity. We are all familiar, if only through BBC TV's 'Dad's Army', with the Home Guard of the Second World War. Far less is known of their First World War equivalent: the Volunteer Training Corps (VTC). Like their counter-parts in WW2, the VTC comprised those who were too old, too young, too unfit or too indispensable to serve in the regular forces. They fought for the right to be armed, uniformed and trained; to be employed on meaningful duties; and at first, to exist at all. This book explores the origins, development and structure of the VTC, along with those who belonged to the many supporting medical, transport, police and youth organisations who kept the home fires burning or, in some cases, tried to put them out. The VTC arose from the need of those men who were forced to stay at home to be seen to be doing their bit. They saw the removal of the bulk of both the regular army and the Territorial Force to the Western Front as their opportunity to prepare to resist the expected German invasion of Britain, and as a way of countering accusations of shirking, or even cowardice.

Organization, Training, and Mobilization of Volunteers Under the Act of April 25, 1914 by United States Army War College Pdf

Excerpt from Organization, Training, and Mobilization of Volunteers Under the Act of April 25, 1914: Prepared by the War College Division, General Staff Corps as a Supplement to the Statement of a Proper Military Policy for the United States According to the recommendations of the War College Division of the General Staff, the first line should now consist of half a million fully trained troops, composed of the Regular Army and the reserve, which has been trained by service in the Regular Army, supported by an additional force Of fully half a million citizen sol diers, prepared to take the field immediately on the outbreak of war, who should have had sufficient previous military training to enable them to meet a trained enemy within three months. At the present time the Regular Army at home could perhaps be expanded to about men by the addition of a large proportion Of recruits, and there would still be required for our first line about citizen soldiers. This combined force would be insufficiently trained. The existing Organized Militia, if expanded to war strength.
