Great Moments in Greek Archaeology by Panos Valavanēs Pdf

This beautifully illustrated book offers a wide-ranging overview of the greatest archaeological sites and discoveries from ancient Greece. The contributors--a veritable who's who of the most venerable names in Greek archaeology--include both those who have excavated at the sites in question and scholars who have spent a lifetime studying the monuments about which they write. Presented here are the legendary sites of ancient Greece, including the Athenian Acropolis, Olympia, Delphi, Schliemann's Mycenae, and the Athenian Agora; the most iconic sculptures in the Greek world, such as the Aphrodite of Melos and the Nike of Samothrace; and several fascinating chapters on underwater archaeology discussing the Kyrenia and Uluburun shipwrecks and the astonishing bronze masterpieces raised from the sea. This is the first book to bring together the archaeological legacy of ancient Greece in a concise and accessible way while still preserving the excitement of discovery.

A Handbook of Greek Archaeology by Harold North Fowler Pdf

Excerpt from A Handbook of Greek Archaeology This manual is intended primarily for the use of students who expect to pursue the study of Greek Archaeology seriously, but it may also be of use to those who desire only a general knowledge of the subject. Neither the serious student at the beginning of his course of study nor the general reader should be disturbed by a discussion of conflicting theories. Matters concerning which some degree of certainty has not been attained have, therefore, been in great measure omitted. The attempt has been made to avoid a very detailed treatment of the subject matter, though in the discussion of technical processes, especially those of architecture, it was necessary to include a good many details, chiefly because a knowledge of them is needful to the student and is not easily accessible. Few entire categories of works of art have (like the carvings in ivory) been completely omitted, though some (e. g. terracotta reliefs) have been treated very briefly, since the size of the book was limited. In the chapter on Vases, footnotes have been used more freely than elsewhere, owing to the fact that the material for illustration and detailed study is scattered and not always easily found. The chapter on Architecture is the work of Mr. Gorham Phillips Stevens, formerly for two years Fellow in Architecture at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, on the grant of the Carnegie Institution. Its historical and descriptive parts are based largely on portions of Borrmann's Die Baukunst des Altertums und des Islam im Mittelalter, and the chapter has been revised by Mr. Fowler. The chapters on Vases and Painting are by Mr. Wheeler, and he has supervised the preparation of the illustrations. Handbook of Greek Archaeology by A. S. Murray Pdf

Excerpt from Handbook of Greek Archaeology: Vases, Bronzes, Gems, Sculpture, Terra-Cottas, Mural Paintings, Architecture, Etc To the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland I ascribe the origin of this book. By their choice the subject of the Rhind Lectures in Edinburgh for 1887 was "Greek Archæology," and at their invitation I endeavored to explain to a public audience the main features of that subject. Afterwards, when a question of publication arose, it seemed the best course to make those lectures serve as the basis of a "Handbook of Greek Archæology," for which there were many demands. There has been delay in carrying out this plan, but the delay has been caused chiefly by the extensive additions and alterations which were necessary to meet the purpose of a Handbook. In choosing the title, "Handbook of Greek Archæology," I could not but reflect on the changes that have come about since 1848, when the third and last edition appeared, of C. 0. Müller's famous "Handbuch der Archæologie der Kunst." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Handbook of Greek Archaeology by A. S. Murray Pdf

Excerpt from Handbook of Greek Archaeology: Vases, Bronzes, Gems, Sculpture, Terra-Cottas, Mural Paintings, Architecture, Etc The tendency of Greek archaeology for a considerable time past has been to confine observation and study to works of sculpture and painting. It admits such other productions of art as may be classed with sculpture and painting, in however humble a' degree for example, engraved gems, coins, designs incised on bronze, and even inscriptions, whether painted or incised. But the artistic element is insisted on as the guiding principle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
