With intimacy and depth, over quicksand in France, insomnia in Cambodia, up a volcano in Rwanda, spinning through the eye of a snowstorm in Bismarck, and atop a dumpster in her own backyard, this New York Times bestselling author, award-winning essayist and journalist for Vogue and Travel + Leisure immerses us in places waiting to be experienced and some that may be more than we’re up for. She encounters spies, angels, leopards, shoes, the odd rattlesnake, a random head of state, and many times over, the ghosts of her past. Each subsequent voyage leads to revelations about her search for solitude, a capacity for adventure, and always, a longing for home.

A Hard Place to Leave by Marcia DeSanctis Pdf

Starting in a dreary hotel room in Moscow in 1983, ending on a West Texas trail in 2021, and weaving back and forth to rural New England, the essays and recollections in this book span the whole globe and half a lifetime. With intimacy, depth, and intelligence, this memoir in essays poses a universal question: what do you do with the pull of restlessness? Marcia DeSanctis, New York Times bestselling travel author, award-winning essayist, journalist for Vogue and Travel + Leisure and former ABC News producer immerses us in places that are both waiting to be experienced and more than we're up for. Traveling over quicksand in Northern France, through a bout of insomnia in Cambodia, up a volcano in Rwanda, spinning through the eye of a snowstorm in Bismarck, and atop a dumpster in her own backyard, the author encounters spies, angels, leopards, shoes, the odd rattlesnake, a random head of state, and, many times over, the ghosts of her own past along the way. And each next voyage leads to powerful revelations about one woman's search for solitude, capacity for adventure, and longing for home.

127 Hours by Aron Ralston Pdf

On Sunday April 27, 2003, 27-year old Aron Ralston set off for a day's hiking in the Utah canyons. Dressed in a t-shirt and shorts, Ralston, a seasoned climber, figured he'd hike for a few hours and then head off to work. 40 miles from the nearest paved road, he found himself on top of an 800-pound boulder. As he slid down and off of the boulder it shifted, trapping his right hand against the canyon wall. No one knew where he was; he had little water; he wasn't dressed correctly; and the boulder wasn't going anywhere. He remained trapped for five days in the canyon: hypothermic at night, de-hydrated and hallucinating by day. Finally, he faced the most terrible decision of his life: braking the bones in his wrist by snapping them against the boulder, he hacked through the skin, and finally succeeded in amputating his right hand and wrist. The ordeal, however, was only beginning. He still faced a 60-foot rappell to freedom, and a walk of several hours back to his car - along the way, he miraculously met a family of hikers, and with his arms tourniqued, and blood-loss almost critical, they heard above them the whir of helicopter blades; just in time, Aron was rescued and rushed to hospital. Since that day, Aron has had a remarkable recovery. He is back out on the mountains, with an artificial limb; he speaks to select groups on his ordeal and rescue; and amazingly, he is upbeat, positive, and an inspiration to all who meet him. This is the account of those five days, of the years that led up to them, and where he goes from here. It is narrative non-fiction at its most compelling.

Between Iraq and a Hard Place by John Norman Pdf

On August 2, 1990, Saddam Hussein launched an invasion of Kuwait that ransacked the country, killed scores of innocent people, and destroyed the country's petroleum infrastructure. Eventually bringing together an allied coalition to turn back Saddam's forces and free Kuwait. But how many people actually know the events occurring in Iraq in the year preceding the invasion from inside the ruling party? I worked as a civilian contractor for close to a year directly for the Revolutionary Command Council, leading a team of Western technicians to modernize banking in the country. On the day of the Kuwait invasion, I, along with hundreds of others were taken hostage as collateral by the Iraqi government. Fearing my own death as well as my immediate colleagues, I led an escape across two deserts five days later to safety in Jordan. I had no previous military training; only the sheer will not to perish as a result of the US government nor forfeit my life for corporate bosses who failed to intervene in any way to help us. This is the story of what I saw in the year preceding Desert Shield that you never heard nor read about, as well as events that followed at the conclusion of Desert Storm. What life was like for a then peaceaEUR"loving people, the regime and how it operated, the betrayals, the "Super Gun", Uday Hussein, the gassing of the Kurds at Halabja, the WMD and the destruction of this stockpile by the US military that caused Gulf War syndrome, and the after effects on our troops which the US government denied for years and years. Thousands and their offspring suffer from these results today and will for generations to come. I never returned to Iraq, but shortly after Desert Storm I did go to perform a similar assignment in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia while the oil wells were still on fire in the desert. There, I was also an "insider" to the workings of the government, the attempt to recover the stolen gold, the corruption in the ruling family, the hypocrisy of the country, and the plight of the Palestinian people working and living in the kingdom for backing Iraq in its war with the allies. Although I waited a quarter of a century to publish this book for fear of retribution for the material in it, I hope this story sheds light on a war and the destruction of a nation and its people that really did not have to be fought at all. I am still traumatized both mentally and physically from the experience and likely will be for the remainder of my natural life. Believe me, it's a lot easier to do in the movies, and it pays a whole lot better! But it also taught me a valuable life lesson: if you think time heals all wounds, it doesn't. That is why they call a scar a scar!

They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area—with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service—it’s hard to know what to believe. Should Amanda and Clay trust this couple—and vice versa? What happened back in New York? Is the vacation home, isolated from civilization, a truly safe place for their families? The autobiography of a 15-year-old New Yorker who is dying of AIDS. Anthony Johnson was born in 1977 and for 11 years was physically and sexually abused by his parents. However, this book is not a grimly explicit account of those years; it is a journal about the strength of friendship and the joy of growing up in New York, the wonders of knowledge and the happiness in his new adopted family. The voice is that of a bright teenager who has belief in the goodness of mankind despite the horrors he has and is suffering.

Being Committed in a Difficult Place by Vernadette R. Augustusel Pdf

When faced with life’s challenges, we need to learn how to stand and remain committed during hard and complicated times, instead of taking flight when things become difficult or problematic. I guess one could say that is practicing the art of being optimistic. But God has put something more on the inside of each of us than just being optimistic; something that helps us stand when life becomes challenging. From time to time, all of us have been faced with complex issues in life. Unfortunately, it is in those times—the testing times—that some people will give up on life. But for those who know who God is, who they are, and what their purposes are in life; have learned to stand and be committed in difficult times. In the book of Joshua 1:9 (AMP), God first asks Joshua a question and then tells him, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not be terrified or dismayed (intimidated), for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” We have that same powerful presence of God available to us today. Once we have accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior; we come to know and realize that God is with us. It’s also important to understand that we have available to us his grace, love, faithfulness, and mercy. With all of that available to us, we should feel empowered to being committed during hard and difficult times. This is why it is important for us not to become settled in our hardships or difficulties, or to take on a defeated attitude towards life. But we should continue trusting and believing God as we go through our difficulties; knowing that God always has a way out. First Corinthians 10:13–14 states, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” The Word continues to encourage us in Ecclesiastes 9:4: “anyone who is among the living has hope—even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!” It is my belief that God has put in each of us an inner strength and peace that we must learn how to tap into, obtain, and walk in. This inner strength is available to each of us if we believe, respect, and receive it so that we can be committed in difficult and uncertain times.
