A History of Ancient Geography, Vol. 1 of 2 by E. H. Bunbury Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Ancient Geography, Vol. 1 of 2: Among the Greeks and Romans From the Earliest Ages Till the Fall of the Roman Empire The present work is designed to supply a deficiency, which I have reason to believe has been felt by classical scholars. While there is no want of elementary treatises on ancient geography, and the requirements of the more advanced student are fully answered by the elaborate articles in Dr. Smith's Dictionary of Ancient Geography so far as relates to the details of particular places and countries, it is remarkable that there does not exist in the English language any such historical review of the subject as a whole, as is to be found in the introductions to the works of Mannert, Ukert, and Forbiger. But even these treatises, besides being confined to students who are familiar with the German language, can hardly be said to meet the demands of either the scholar or the geographer at the present day. Ukert's introductory volume was published as far back as 1816, and that of Mannert still earlier, while the more recent work of Forbiger (itself published in 1841) is so disfigured by the accumulation of cumbrous and unnecessary lists of names as to be altogether repulsive to the English reader. Excerpt from History of Ancient Geography, Vol. 2 of 2: Among the Greeks and Romans From the Earliest Ages Till the Fall of the Roman Empire Of his other criticisms we have no account, but as Polemon appears to have occupied himself with researches of an anti quarian and topographical character,3 rather than with ques tions of general geography, it is probable that they would have had little bearing on our immediate subject. A History of Ancient Geography by E. H. Bunbury Pdf

First published in 1879, Sir Edward Bunbury's A History of Ancient Geography remains the seminal work in English on its subject. In two substantial volumes of outstanding scholarship the author surveys the development of geography in ancient times from its beginnings to the fall of the Roman Empire. It contains a wealth of information drawn not just from the geographical handbooks of Strabo, Pomponius Mela, Pliny the Elder and Ptolemy but from every corner of Greek and Latin literature including contemporary travelers' accounts. Integrating topographical analyses with geography, the History remains unchallenged as a meticulously researched and thoroughly balanced treatment of its subject.?This edition contains a new introduction by Duane Roller, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Classics, Ohio State University, USA.
