The Story of Cooperstown by Ralph Birdsall Pdf

The ensuing narrative is a faithful record of life in Cooperstown from the earliest times, except that the persons and events to be described have been selected for their story-interest, to the exclusion of much that a history is expected to contain. The dull thread of village history has been followed only in such directions as served for stringing upon it and holding to the light the more shining gems of incident and personality to which it led. Trivial happenings have been included for the sake of some quaint, picturesque, or romantic quality. Much of importance has been omitted that declined to yield to such treatment as the writer had in view. The effort has been made to exclude everything that seemed unlikely to be of interest to the general reader.

Induction Day at Cooperstown by Dennis Corcoran Pdf

Nearly every year since 1939, baseball's most outstanding players, umpires, pioneers and executives have been enshrined at Cooperstown in a public ceremony attracting thousands of fans from across (and sometimes beyond) the United States. Whether conferred by the Baseball Writers Association of America, the Veterans Committee, or in the case of 17 Negro League greats in 2006, an ad hoc committee of historians, Hall of Fame membership is the game's highest honor. This book covers the origins and history of the Hall of Fame museum and its election process, provides general information on each year's class and induction ceremony, and includes concise biographical and career discussion for every Hall of Famer, as well as commentary on his (Effa Manley is the lone female) path to election, and highlights of his speech.

Around Cooperstown by Brian Nielsen,Becky Nielsen Pdf

Best known today as the Home of Baseball, Cooperstown and the Otsego Lake area are rich in history and, unlike many places, much of this heritage remains intact. Thus, the Cooperstown area is said to offer us "a step back in time." You will not find any fast-food restaurants or chain stores here. A majority of the original buildings are still in use, serving as small shops, offices, banks, and other businesses. Each of the nearby villages--Cherry Valley, Springfield, Milford, Hartwick, and Index--has its own incredible architecture and its own story to tell. Otsego Lake is the famed Glimmerglass in the writings of Cooperstown's favorite son, James Fenimore Cooper. The area also boasts the Glimmerglass Opera, the Leatherstocking Golf Course, and historical museums, including the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

A Condensed History of Cooperstown (Classic Reprint) by S. T. Livermore Pdf

Excerpt from A Condensed History of Cooperstown It is with diffidence that this volume is now offered to the public. And yet, the encouragement given to the author by competent advisers, and the earnest desire he has cherished to execute his task faithfully and with impartiality, inspire in him the hope of a charitable judgment from its readers whenever they may discover apparent or real errors. The former edition of the Chronicles of Cooperstown, although not containing the name of the author, is well known to have been written by J. Fenimore Cooper. Items of local interest which he omitted are now inserted in notes, and lest these should too much encumber his work, a chain of incidents beginning at a point prior to his record, and subsequently parallel with it, is given in connection with the history as brought down from 1838 to the present. In doing this a careful examination of consecutive and cotemporaneous files of village newspapers, published weekly from 1795 to 1862, has been made. The Origins and History of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League by Merrie A. Fidler Pdf

This in-depth treatment of the organization and operation of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League draws on primary documents from league owner Arthur Meyerhoff and others for a unique perspective inside the AAGPBL. The study begins with a brief history of women’s softball, an important precursor to, and talent pool for, women’s professional baseball. Next the book investigates league administration and organization as well as publicity and promotion. Later chapters cover team administrative structures, managers, chaperones, player backgrounds, and league policies. Finally, discussion focuses on the activities of the AAGPBL Players’ Association from 1980 onward. Informed by many years of research and insights from former players, this exhaustive history contains 149 photographs.
