A History of Fly Fishing for Trout (Classic Reprint) by John Waller Hills Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Fly Fishing for Trout From the Book of St. Albans onwards we part company with French books. There are no good ones until modern times, and these are founded on ours. Henceforth the stream runs on British soil, and it runs deep and full. But the debt which we owe to French literature must not be forgotten, a debt all the greater because it lies in the domain Of the spirit. The small amount Of fly fishing literature which does exist in France before the nineteenth century is described in Chapter IV. Fly-Fishing and Fly-Making for Trout, Bass, Salmon, Etc (Classic Reprint) by John Harrington Keene Pdf

Excerpt from Fly-Fishing and Fly-Making for Trout, Bass, Salmon, Etc The formation of the eye of the fish does not materi ally difier, one species from another, among the angler's fishes. The cornea is somewhat flat in sectional outline, and the shape, or, so to speak, the ground plan, is virtu ally similar in save the European graylin g (s. Thymallus). The pupil of the eye of this fish is oval instead of ciren lar - the oval of the plover's egg rather than that of the hen, being sharper than a true oval at one end. The apex of this sharp end is pointed toward the upper part of the head, tailward, giving the fish a somewhat sinister appearance. What purpose this particular configuration serves I do not know, but one thing is certain The vis ual ability of the grayling is equal, if not superior, to that of the trout, as is proved by its rising, often from a great depth, to the fly. I notice, also, that the normal waiting position of this fish is inclined toward the water's surface instead of being horizontal, as is usually the case with trout. This being so, the greater mass of the rays of direct sunlight would fall on the forward part of the eye, and I offer it as a conjecture, based on the law of devel Opment, that this, continued through generations, has evolved the peculiar shape. The graylin g of this country, though apparently similar in every other respect, does not exhibit the peculiarity referred to. Rod and River, Or Fly-Fishing for Salmon, Trout and Grayling (Classic Reprint) by Arthur Thomas Fisher Pdf

Excerpt from Rod and River, or Fly-Fishing for Salmon, Trout and Grayling As long as there are rivers, and fish in them, so long there will be fishermen. The brotherhood of anglers is large, and the methods they employ to catch fish many and various. It is my intention to treat of fishing for salmon, trout, and grayling only in the following pages, restricting myself to the consideration of these three varieties Of the Salmonidae, their capture by means of the artificial fly, and the natural flies which form food for trout and grayling. Scores of books have from time to time been written on matters piscatorial, and it may be said, Still they come.' I have the audacity to add yet another volume to the long list of such works already existing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Concise Practical Treatise on Artificial Fly Fishing for Trout (Classic Reprint) by Grey Drake Pdf

Excerpt from A Concise Practical Treatise on Artificial Fly Fishing for Trout I prefer the spring cog-check wheel, which, when the line is lengthened or shortened, makes a noise like that caused by winding up a clock. By this reel the line may be lengthened or shortened with sufficient rapidity, and with precisely, and no more. Than the proper resistance, the checks preventing the line running out too fast. This reel is, I think, far preferable to the multiplying reel, which is very liable to get out of order. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Science of Dry Fly Fishing and Salmon Fly Fishing (Classic Reprint) by Fred G. Shaw Pdf

Excerpt from The Science of Dry Fly Fishing and Salmon Fly Fishing This consists, in the first place, in the life-history of the salmon, from the time it is deposited as ova by the parent fish in the redd until it attains its full grown state. I have ventured, when dealing with this interesting matter, to introduce some original theories as regards those questions which are still a subject of controversy. In the second place, I have dealt with the different methods of casting, and by plates and diagrams have endeavoured to show the various casts for presenting the lure to the salmon, and explained the methods to be adopted when actually fishing. A History of Fly Fishing for Trout by John Waller Hills Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Fly Fishing for Trout The sport is so royal that there is neither gentle nor villein, if it knew of it and loved it well, who would not be more honoured for that reason by all who understand it. Good Sir, if all knew it, would it be less honoured than it is now? Nay, rather it would be more honoured, fair gentle friend, know it well. La Chace dou Serf. About 1250. Translation by Sir Henry Dryden. The history of fly fishing begins at the close of the fifteenth century. It is true that there is one isolated record long before this; for the curious can carry its story back to the second century of our era and read in a Roman author an account of fly fishing for a fish, apparently the trout, in a river in Macedonia. The Erne by Henry Newland Pdf

Excerpt from The Erne: Its Legends and Its Fly Fishing In like manner, I will vouch for the truth of my legends. I do not mean to say that I will record my conviction that St. Columba did curse the Enchanted Throw, or that Prince Slievan and his bride did vanish on a moonbeam but I do vouch for this, that those who told me the legends did firmly believe both the one and the other. That the legends are not fabricated, but compiled they were collected from the fishing attend ants, and are the reminiscences of many an hour of bright sunshine and breezeless water, when neither trout nor salmon could be persuaded to break the surface.
