Second-hand authorities on the subject are few, incomplete, and untrustworthy, and there was nothing to do but seek and study the original documents. The task was the more difficult because the path was practically unbroken. There was from the first no lack of materials, but nobody had ever undertaken to sift and combine them. There were no successes of predecessors to emulate, no blunders to profit by; all had to be done for the first time. That it is done as it should be done, as it might be done, is not claimed. The author is sure of but one thing: that he has worked with diligence, and a faithful effort to tell the story truthfully, without so overloading it with details as to make it confusing or wearisome. Some one who shall undertake the task in future years, with documents in the meantime accumulated, will avoid the mistakes of this book and make a far better. Probably every reader will note omissions, and among them things that he will think he had a right to look for in such a book. The chief reason for such omissions is lack of space. D., is a very valuable contribution to our historical literature. It is a book for the writing of which Dr. Saunders has special qualification. To the accumulation of materials and the study of the subject he has devoted much of his time for many years. His long and distinguished services as a minister, and his close official and personal relation to the institutions of the denomination, have brought him into the deepest fellowship with the spirit and aims of the Baptist body. His philosophical insight, his constructive power and literary skill enable him to describe with great clearness the religious movements of the past, and to show the relation of these movements to the general life of the times he is considering. Accordingly, while the book is a history of the Baptists of the Maritime Provinces, it is much more. The author's view of his task as stated by himself at the beginning of Chapter V, is: "In any attempt to write the history of a single denomination, the true course is to recognize the number and work of all, giving, of course, a fuller account and the details of the labors of the one whose history is sought to be written. Excerpt from A History of the Baptists: Traced by Their Vital Principles and Practices, From the Time of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, to the Year 1886 This request was declined on account of its inherent difficulty and the pressure of a large New York pastorate. He submitted two or three weighty names of those who, in his judgment, were in every way better qualified for the work, among them the late Dr. William R. Williams, and wrote letters of introduction to these several gentlemen. In a few weeks they returned, stating that they had consulted not only those referred to, but other well-known Baptist writers, each of Whom suggested that, as the author had devoted years to the examination of the subject, he owed it to his denomination to write. And publish thereon. After fuller consideration he consented to make the attempt, with the distinct understanding that he should be entirely unfettered in regard to the principle on which the work should be written. He saw at a glance that as Baptists are in no way the authors or offspring of an ecclesiastical system that, therefore, their history cannot be written on the current methods of ecclesiastical history. The attempt to show that any religious body has come down from the Apostles an unchanged people is of itself an assumption of infallibility, and contradicts the facts of history. Truth only is changeless, and only as any people have held to the truth in its purity and primitive simplicity has the world had an unchanging religion. The truth has been held by individual men and scattered companies, but never in un broken continuity by any sect as such. Sect after sect has appeared and held it for a time, then has destroyed itself by mixing error with the truth; again, the truth has evinced its divinity by rising afresh in the hands of a newly organized people, to perpetuate its diffusion in the earth.
