Second-hand authorities on the subject are few, incomplete, and untrustworthy, and there was noth ing to do but seek and study the original documents. The task was the more difficult because the path was practically unbroken. There was from the first no lack of materials, but nobody had ever under taken to sift and combine them. There were no successes of predecessors to emulate, no blunders to profit by; all had to be done for the first time. That it is done as it should be done, as it might be done, is not claimed. The author is sure of but one thing: that he has worked with diligence, and a faithful effort to tell the story truthfully, without so overloading it with details as to make it confusing or wearisome. Excerpt from A History of Baptists in New Jersey The author of this history of Baptists in New Jersey owes a vast debt of gratitude to pastors and to others familiar with olden days on account of their aid to secure a fitting history of the earlier and later times. The work was undertaken at the suggestion of Rev. O. P. Eaches of Hightstown. Fifty and more years ago the Rev. R. T. Middleditch was asked by the Board of the State Convention to write such a history. Later, Rev. J. M. Carpenter was a substitute for Mr. Middleditch. The papers of these gentleman have fallen into my hands and other facts have come to my knowledge. The author has been associated with the New Jersey Baptist Convention since 1843. He was personally acquainted with the men who originated it, and with very old men and women who were familiar with the earliest times and has also stored up from his youth data and facts touching the past. He is specially indebted to O. B. Leonard of Plainfield, without whose help the history would have been quite immature. To T. T. Price, M. D., of Tuckerton, a native of Cape May county, eminently familiar with the Baptist beginnings there about; to J. W. Lyell of Camden; to Deacon Howell of Morristown; to Pastor Fisher of Holmdel; to Pastor Johnson of Jersey City; to Pastor Sembower of Cedarville; to D. Dewolf of Newark; to Pastor Anschutz of Hoboken; to C. A. Kenney, clerk of Lafayette church; to Rev. G. W. Clark and Rev. O. P. Eaches both of Hightstown, in preparing the book for "press." Mr. Clark also furnished the sketch of the Afro-American churches, and prepared the brief indexes. Excerpt from Baptist History of the North Pacific Coast: With Special Reference to Western Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska In introducing this volume to the Baptists of America there is little needed to be said. The author has undertaken the work: First. Because of the importance of the field historically covered, which is second to no other in America, if in the world, in its material and religious possibilities. Secondly. Because of the rapidity with which our denomination has grown to be a factor, which must be counted in every great movement for the betterment of mankind on the Pacific Coast, and to every part of the world to which it is tributary. Thirdly. Because the history covers the most important period of its civic and religious development, namely, laying the foundations. Fourthly. Because the eye and heart of the great Baptist brotherhood of America, five millions strong, are turned this way asking for the history of this important and far-reaching period of mission work. Fifthly. Because for several years I have been solicited by a large number of the prominent members of the Northwest Baptist Convention to write its history, and officially appointed as its historical secretary to do so, with a consulting committee to aid me in the work. This committee has consisted, uniformly, of Rev. J. Cairns and Rev. S. W. Beaven, whose extensive personal experience in work on and knowledge of the whole field have rendered their services invaluable. Sixthly. Because for a quarter of a century of the time covered by this history, and that its most important period, the author was closely and a large part of the time officially connected with the work over the whole field, standing shoulder to shoulder with these noble men and women of God who devoted the best years of their own lives to this Christly service, without whom it could not have been so highly honored of God, approved by the Spirit and the preeminence given to the Christ in whose service we all shared. From many sources of prominence and influence all along the Pacific Coast, it has been impressed upon me that I should take up the work; that it was needful and the duty of some one to write it for permanent use and preservation I could but acknowledge. But I shrank from such an undertaking for two reasons: First, because Rev. C. H. Mattoon has spent years of time and large money ill gathering Baptist annals covering the North Pacific Coast, which it was anticipated from year to year, would be published in a single volume, covering the whole field.
