Knox presents a Vel?uez who was much more aware of the art theory of his era than previously acknowledged, leading him to reinterpret Las Meninas and The Spinners as representing together a polemically charged celebration of the "handedness" of painting. Knox removes Vel?uez from his Iberian isolation and seeks to recover his highly self-conscious attempt to carve out a place for himself within the history of European painting as a whole. The Late Paintings of Vel?uez presents an artist who, like Annibale Carracci, Poussin, Rembrandt, and Vermeer was not only aware of contemporary theoretical writings on art, but also able to translate that knowledge and understanding into a distinctive and personal theory of painting. In Las Meninas and The Spinners, Vel?uez propounded this theory with paint, not words. Knox's rethinking of the dynamic relationship between text and image presents a case, not of writing influencing painting, or vice versa, but of the two realms being inextricably bound together. Painterly brushwork presented a challenge to writers on art not just because it was connected too intimately with the base actions of the hand; it was also devilishly hard to describe. By reading Vel?uez's painterly performance as text, Knox deciphers how Vel?uez was able to craft theoretical arguments more compelling and more vivid than any written counterparts.

El hombre que perseguía su sombra es la primera novela de Manuel Antonio Mejía, terminada de escribir el 17 de noviembre de 1990 y publicada el 23 de noviembre de 1990, cuyo contenido encierra el nacimiento de tres niños (-trillizos: dos varones y una hembra-), dos de los cuales se pierden sin dejar rastro. Queda vivo Gherald Venzon Cinzano, y luego sale a luz su hermana: Ernestine Donarkerz (que era, al final, también, una Venzon Cinzano, como su hermano). Por circunstancias diferentes uno de ellos (Gherald) es enviado a Grecia por protección en tiempos de las persecuciones de judíos sin distinción y alemanes sumidos en la pobreza debido a la Segunda Gran Guerra, y luego llega al Santo Domingo que él: Gherald Venzon, suele llamar Nueva Atenas, quizás el autor evocando en boca de su protagonista aquello de la Novísima Atenas de los colonizadores europeos y previos, en medio de una nueva avalancha de migrantes en tiempos de Trujillo tras aquella Segunda Guerra Mundial, y logra el éxito junto a su gran amigo Edgard Sinae Hermans, que resulta ser también su primo. Sobresale la llaga de un oscuro personaje: Wolfgan Odeim (interpretar los apellidos), que coincide con el protagonista en un siniestro y que es perseguido por Edel Venzon Doors (tío de Gherald), excompañero de éste en las "SS" de Hitler, cuya persecución le lleva al país de los tiempos del dictador Trujillo. La obra envuelve un lazo romántico que el autor maneja de forma magistral entre Gherald y su primer amor. Parte de la mayor grandeza de la obra reside en el triunfal trabajo llevado a cabo por el autor para incorporar su libro en el Realismo Mágico de los grandes del siglo XX que él denomina Literatura Espejo sin que esta se asocie al viejo género del medioevo y sí a las grandes cosas por descubrir del nuevo siglo que se avecina. La comparación, de forma subrepticia entre catástrofe del Memphis de 1916 en el puerto principal de Santo Domingo y el Alado, de la obra, es, más bien, un recurso del autor para terminar de dar sentido a su primera novela; el riesgo del grupo de científicos, cuidado si es advirtiendo de algo futuro ya que ese sentido de profetizar, anticipar información fidedigna es algo que caracteriza y engrandece y da verdadero sentido a la obra literaria. Hay dentro de la obra personajes secundarios cuya causa y consecuencia es el destino triste, como es el caso de la familia Bonzüa Carrië, llegada -a la Nueva Atenas de Gherald- desde Francia, y otros personajes complejos y difíciles, tal es caso de Fredonis Ranceth. Fuera del contexto de la novela podríamos decir que el punto de partida de la obra, nace como en el camino de preguntas continuas y búsqueda del bien. Reflexionar que aquellos son todavía tiempos del idealismo creativo. Fue así como se inició ese universo ante un hombre frente a su propio espejo que este autor denominó El hombre que perseguía su sombra.
