A List of Hymenoptera (Classic Reprint) by Francis Walker Pdf

Excerpt from A List of Hymenoptera The aspect of tbese regions indicates that they arc especially adapted to Aculeate Hymenoptera, ancl the following list shows that Mr. Lord lias made an extensive collection of them, aud that he has discovered numerous new species, though many of this tribe were published by Ivlug in the work which is here often quoted. Mr. Frederick Smith, of the British Museum, has kindly arranged the specimens and has named many of the species already described. Very few of the species here enumerated are natives of North Europe; several of them inhabit the Mediterranean region; others have a wider range, and extend to South Africa and to West Africa, or to Hindostan. The other tribes of Hymenoptera are very slightly traced, excepting the Chrysid and the genus 13racon. The Chrysid(r) are well represented, and the coloured wings of these species of Bracou arc significant of the great heat of their dwelling-place. The Insects were found in the following localities: - Egypt. Cairo. Shoobra. Heliopolis. Red Mountain. Geezech Pyramids. Africa, near the Red Sea. Berenice. Souakin. Hor Turaanib. Massowah. Sheykh Berout. Akeek (Island). Harkeko. Dahleck (Island). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Descriptions of New Species of Hymenoptera in the Collection of the British Museum (Classic Reprint) by Frederick Smith Pdf

Excerpt from Descriptions of New Species of Hymenoptera in the Collection of the British Museum The late Mr. Frederick Smith was engaged, at the time of his death, in the determination and arrangement of the large collection of foreign Hymenoptera in the British Museum. During the pro gress of this work he drew up descriptions of those species which he recognized as new, with the view of finally submitting the whole of his manuscript to the Trustees for publication. He was not permitted to complete this task: after a short illness, Frederick Smith died on February 16th, 187 9. It seemed to the Trustees to be in the interest of the collection in the British Museum, as well as of science generally, that such descriptions as were left by Mr. Smith should be published as soon as possible. Although they were prepared with great care, and were apparently ready for the printer, the author, probably, would have introduced some emendations if he had lived to see his work through the press. Under the circumstances mentioned, the only alterations admitted by the Editor were those of some specific names which were found to be preoccupied for species of the same genus. The original manuscript will be preserved in the archives of the Department. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Hymenoptera Texana (Classic Reprint) by Ezra Townsend Cresson Pdf

Excerpt from Hymenoptera Texana The present memoir is intended to contain a list of all the species of hymenoptera known to me from Texas, excepting those belonging to the families Chrysididae, Formicidae and the smaller Chalcididae, which have not been studied. Besides the material in the collection of this Society, I have had placed at my disposal for determination and study, the Splendid collee tion of Mr. G. W. Belfrage, made in Bosque Co., the fine collection in the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Cambridge, Mass, 'made by Mr. J. Bo1], in Dallas and a small collection of Mr. L. Heilig brodt, made in Travis and Bastrop Counties. To these gentlemen, and also to Dr. H. Hagen, of the Cambridge Museum, I feel greatly indebted for the valuable assistance they have rendered me in the preparation of this work. Of the nineteen families studied in this paper, over six hundred species are enumerated, nearly three hundred of which appear to be new, and are herein described. A Monograph of the British Phytophagous Hymenoptera, Vol. 4 by Peter Cameron Pdf

Excerpt from A Monograph of the British Phytophagous Hymenoptera, Vol. 4: Cynipid and Appendix The Appendix brings up our information to date, more particularly as regards the nomenclature and biology of the groups. As will be seen, considerable alteration has been made in the definitions of the genera, their number, as compared with what Thomson and myself have adopted, being greatly increased. The only remark I make on this subject 18 that if exotic Species are to be treated according to the same method a large number of genera or sub-genera will have to be created. Synopsis of the Families and Genera of the Hymenoptera of America, North of Mexico by E. T. Cresson Pdf

Excerpt from Synopsis of the Families and Genera of the Hymenoptera of America, North of Mexico: Together With a Catalogue of the Described Species, and Bibliography The study of the Hymenoptera of our country has not kept pace with some of the other orders from the want of an introductory work in our own language. Vl'estwood's invaluable Introduction to the Modern Classification of Insects, while partly supplying the want, is insufficient, and at the present expensive and difficult to obtain. The want is especially felt by those who have not access to large scientific libraries, and many are discouraged from attempting the study by the difficulties and expense of acquiring the necessary litera ture, with the added difficulties of the foreign languages. The writer has been frequently appealed to and requested to indi cate such books as will enable a beginner to separate even the fami lies and genera. The impossibility of obtaining any works in the English language, and the almost equally hopeless chance of deter mining the species, have doubtless deterred many from aiding in the development of the study of probably the most interesting order of insects. Check List of the Lepidoptera of Boreal America (Classic Reprint) by William Barnes Pdf

Excerpt from Check List of the Lepidoptera of Boreal America It has seemed to us therefore that the publication on our part of this present list may be of some value to students of Lepidoptera who wish not only to arrange their collections but to have before them in a concise form the latest views on the classification of this order of insects. In general this list is based on the latest revision of each group, combined in many instances, more especially in the so-called Macrolepidoptera, with work which has been carried on for several years in the Barnes Collection in connection with the study of the existing types of North American species and the comparison of specimens with these same types; the synonymy of each species is given as fully as possible in so far as it relates to species described from North American material, and we have incorporated a number of changes in the list which have been commented on in several papers by ourselves which recently appeared in print.
