A Little Bit of Ayurveda by Deacon Carpenter Pdf

This entry in the popular Little Bit of series introduces the ancient healing practice of Ayurveda. Known as the “grandparent” of modern medicine and the sister philosophy of yoga, Ayurveda lets patients take control of their own health by focusing on prevention, not medical intervention. Practitioners become active participants in their own wellness by managing stress, consuming healing foods, and understanding which remedies work for their particular body/mind types. A Little Bit of Ayurveda explores the history, philosophy, and practical application of this ancient and relevant system: it looks at Ayurveda’s influence on both Eastern and Western medicines; outlines the “five element theory” and the doshas; reveals how disease manifests itself; and offers simple rituals to keep you balanced, from seasonal eating and deep belly breathing to dry brushing and tongue scraping. A quiz at the end helps you complete an Ayurvedic self-evaluation . . . and starts you on the path to wellness!

This science was known as Ayurveda. The exact Sanskrit meaning of this word means life knowledge. For millenniums, the art of healing knowledge based on this science has been passed down through the generations to heal and cure people of the diseases known to man. More than 5000 years ago, two of these great wise men, who practiced this science, named Charaka and Susrutha made medical compendiums, which talked about healing procedures, operational procedures, and medicines which would be used to heal the diseases known to man down the ages. These classics written in Sanskrit have been considered to be the foundation of the ancient science of Ayurveda. At the same time, traditional Chinese medicine was also making a name for itself, thanks to great medical practitioners, who took the help of these compendiums in order to develop well-known medical systems. Nowadays, these systems are considered to be alternative and complementary treatments, supporting the more conventional forms of modern medicine. This science is practiced in the USA, as a complementary health care licensed practice. This science is divided into eight parts – General medicine, surgery, pediatrics, dentistry/ENT/ophthalmology, toxicology, psychiatric treatments, anti- aging remedies and remedies for bearing healthy children. So, one can see that even at that time, all the ills of human beings were studied and remedies hunted for them. Ayurveda is based on curing disease or disorders from the root level. It uses herbs which are 100% natural, and are definitely not going to have a detrimental effect upon the body, when you stop using them. According to ancient Ayurveda, a living body is made up of five elements. The proper balance between the five elements so that they work in harmonious tandem with nature. [Prakriti.] Prakriti can also be called Constitution, when it is applied to another substance like a mineral, a fruit or a vegetable, etc. A healthy person is going to have an inborn and natural combination of three important elements, which are going to put him in harmony with nature. That means he is in good health. When these important elements are imbalanced, you are going to suffer from diseases. Ayurveda is the method in which these three elements are balanced by helping to modulate the surrounding environment, the human diet, lifestyle and the behavior of a suffering patient so that he can be healed. An Ayurvedic lifestyle concentrates on more of fruit and vegetables in your diet to keep healthy.

The Roots of Ayurveda by D. Wujastyk Pdf

Ayurveda, the ancient art of healing, has been practiced in India for more than two thousand years and survives today as a living medical tradition whose principles are at the heart of many "alternative" therapies now used in the West. This "science of longevity" has parallels with Buddhist thought, and advocates a life of moderation through which the three humors of the body will be brought into balance. The writings selected for this volume are taken from Sanskrit medical texts written by the first Ayurvedic physicians, who lived between the fifth century b.c. and the fourteenth century a.d. Here readers will find wide-ranging and fascinating advice on the benefits of garlic therapy, prayers for protection against malevolent disease deities, surgical techniques, exercise regimens, the treatment of poisons, the interpretation of dreams, and more.

Ayurveda: A Way of Life: Scientific Explanation of Ayurvedic Wisdom and Its Benefit for Body, Mind and Society by Vinod Verma Pdf

Ayurveda: A way of Life has been the first book ever that explains the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda in terms of modern science. It was published in India in 1990, thereafter in various European countries and America. It is a scholarly book that is meant to give the reader an insight into the classical tradition of this 5000 years old discipline. At the same time, the book is a guide in the living tradition of Ayurveda and inspires one to assimilate this age-old wisdom into daily life for enhancing energy to the optimum level. The book also highlights Ayurvedic psychology and importance of sattva (inner peace and stillness) and santosha (sense of contentment) in order to ward off the ailments. Modern medical research is directed toward finding cures for diseases, but there is little talk about finding methods to maintain good health and adopting preventive measures to avoid various ailments. Healthy living and preventive measures are not a part of the medical education. In Ayurveda, the principal focus is on maintaining good health and adopting a healthy way of living. The second important drawback in modern Western medicine is that it treats all human beings the same way. Individual differences and individual constitutions are not taken into consideration. We differ as much inwardly in our reactions and responses to a given treatment as we vary in our external appearance and personality traits. In Ayurveda, individual variations are taken into consideration and health care and treatment are based upon the individual constitution. Ayurveda is an extensive and vast source of knowledge. This book is only an introductory guide to the Ayurvedic way of life. Day-to-day practices and what we can do for ourselves in order to keep good health and bring harmony in our lives are described. Various methods for self-diagnosis, for curing minor ailments through simple measures, for preventing disease, for making simple herbal medicines, and for inner and outer cleaning of the body are discussed here. Every practical detail is explained and information about the availability of various products is provided. Ayurvedic medicines are not limited to the herbs that grow in India (especially in the Himalayas) where the original literature of Ayurveda was compiled. Identification of the herbs according to taste and other properties of the drugs are explained in detail. This book is written to help people become conscious of their health-to make them aware that a little care can save them from minor health problems, as well as from long-term health hazards. With the increasing number of ailments and a universal rise in health care costs, it has become more and more essential for each individual to make a personal effort to maintain good health. The old wisdom of rishis (sages) teaches us the use of preventive measures and mild medicine for maintaining good health instead of waiting until body and mind are exhausted and there are major disorders in the organism. The purpose of this book is to present methods people can use to improve the quality of life. For this, it is essential to begin from a new beginning. We live our lives in bits and pieces, fragmented in time, space, body, and mind. Therefore, to adapt Ayurveda in our lives, we just cannot start the application of its principles on our disintegrated beings. What I mean by a new beginning is that first we need to see and feel ourselves as a "whole," as a "unit," and an "integrity" and then we can realize our oneness with the cosmos. Holistic medicine is not possible without a holistic way of life. This book is presented in a way that will make us self-aware so we can realize our integrity as body, mind, and soul. This book is written for general readers who may not have any background of Ayurveda or medicine in general. A special effort has been made to explain the technical terms in an easy-to-understand manner. Comments and suggestions from readers are welcomed.
