A Manual of Moral Philosophy by Andrew P. Peabody Pdf

Excerpt from A Manual of Moral Philosophy: Designed for Colleges and High Schools The author has endeavored in this treatise to comprehend all that is essential in a manual of ethics, with a view equally to precision and to conciseness. He has not thought it necessary to controvert views other than his own; for conflicting opinions are apt to bewilder rather than to enlighten those who are not adepts in the science, and it is better to supersede false theories by the clear statement of the truth than to enter into their formal refutation. Thus, for instance, as regards utilitarianism, instead of exposing the fallacies of its several types, the attempt has been made (in Chapter III.) to set them aside by assigning to expediency its legitimate secondary place as a principle of action. Among the author's chief motives in the preparation of this manual has been his desire to give emphasis to his view of the ground of Right, as consisting in intrinsic fitness, independent of any will or arbitrary law human or divine, and essential as furnishing the only standard by which we can attain a knowledge of the Divine attributes. The ground of Right is the basis of Moral Philosophy, and must of necessity determine the validity and worth of the system built upon it. Next in importance to this is the classification of the virtues which constitute the Right. Here it is not sufficient to enumerate the prominent traits which enter into a good character. A Manual of Moral Philosophy by Andrew Preston Peabody Pdf

This book has been prepared, particularly, for the use of the Freshman Class in Harvard College. The author has, at the same time, desired to meet the need, felt in our high schools, of a manual of Moral Science fitted for the more advanced classes. In the preparation of this treatise, the author has been at no pains to avoid saying what others had said before. Yet the book is original, so far as such a book can be or ought to be original. The author has directly copied nothing except Dugald Stewart's classification of the Desires. But as his reading for several years has been principally in the department of ethics, it is highly probable that much of what he supposes to be his own thought may have been derived from other minds. Of course, there is no small part of the contents of a work of this kind, which is the common property of writers, and must in some form reappear in every elementary manual. Guide to Ethics and Moral Philosophy by Brent Adkins Pdf

Brent Adkins traces the history of ethics and morality by examining six thinkers: Aristotle, Spinoza, Kant, Mill, Nietzsche and Levinas. The book is divided into 3 sections - Ethics, Morality and Beyond. Two thinkers are paired in each section to show you how the important questions of moral philosophy have been answered so that you might better answer them for yourself. You'll learn what the philosophers actually said about how to live the best kind of life and, more importantly, why.
