Excerpt from Manual of Geographical Science, Vol. 1: Containing Mathematical, Physical Geography, Chartography, Theory of Description and Geographical Terminology The importance of Astronomical and Optical knowledge to the practical Geographer is so obvious, that it will not be necessary to say anything on the subject here 5 and we shall therefore, without further preface, proceed to state briefly the nature and extent of the information which we propose to give the reader on the subjects of Astronomy and Optics. In the first place, then, we must observe, that the space allotted to Astronomy in the present Geographical Treatise is, of necessity, very limited, and therefore we must follow one of two courses in treating of the subject; we must either give a general outline of the whole science, without entering into particulars, or we must select some portion of it of special importance to the Geographer, and develop that at some length, so as to make it practically useful.
