The difficulties attending the navigation of unknown seas, or of exploring uninhabited deserts, were too great to admit of those frequent interchanges with foreign countries which have formed the basis of modern geographical discovery: yet the subject has always been attractive to a large portion of the human race. Even among the ancients, when the knowledge of geographical science was very limited, the descriptions of Herodotus, Strabo, Pliny, and others, were among the most valuable productions of those classic ages. But, in more modern times, since the method of sending out exploratory equipments has been adopted, Geography has acquired a much more important place among the various departments of human knowledge.
