A Painful Duty by Norman Thomas di Giovanni Pdf

The final work of fiction from a legendary writer and translator. In a series of short stories, some no more than a couple of pages long, di Giovanni captures the lives of the Italian American community in Newton, a suburb of Boston, in the middle of the 20th century. These are the workers, the labourers, the drunks, the women running family homes, the children playing in the streets, the romances, the arguments, the fights, the births, the deaths. The stories are fiction but the people are real. These are the people who came to America for a better life. These are the people that Norman Thomas di Giovanni grew up with. This is his tribute to them. His ability to capture a person, an entire life story, in a phrase or a gesture is reminiscent of Richard Yates. Here is a writer at the height of his powers. A Painful Duty is the last book Norman Thomas di Giovanni completed during his lifetime. He was working on the stories right up until his death in early 2017, at the age of 83.

A Painful Duty by Christopher Dudley Evans Pdf

Nothing reveals the dark underbelly of humanity more profoundly than the practice of criminal law. A Painful Duty: 40 Years at the Criminal Bar celebrates author C.D. Evans? journey that, in his own words, “brought combat, exhilaration, exhaustion, and often, high humour ? if irony is going to strike, it will be in the courtroom.” Following on the success of his best-selling Milt Harradence: The Western Flair, in his own memoir Evans reveals further insights into the practice and the characters of the Criminal Bar, with special tributes to the no-nonsense judges of the early days. Noteworthy cases include police officers moonlighting as bankrobbers, North of 60 escapades, the defence of famous hockey players, First Nations clients, and away-from-home games in Toronto and Bermuda.

Duty and Healing by Benjamin Freedman Pdf

"Duty and Healing" positions ethical issues commonly encountered in clinical situations within Jewish law. The concept of duty is significant in exploring bioethical issues, and this book presents an authentic and non-parochial Jewish approach to bioethics, while it includes critiques of both current secular and Jewish literatures. Among the issues the book explores are the role of family in medical decision-making, the question of informed consent as a personal religious duty, and the responsibilities of caretakers. The exploration of contemporary ethical problems in healthcare through the lens of traditional sources in Jewish law is an indispensable guide of moral knowledge.

Beyond the Call of Duty by Gregory Mellema Pdf

A surprisingly large number of people have denied that it is possible for human moral agents to act in such a way as to go beyond or transcend what moral duty or obligation requires of them. Some of this opposition to the possibility of supererogation, as it is called, has been motivated by theological concerns. This book surveys the concerns of Luther, Calvin, and Melanchthon, as they react to certain teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, as well as the concerns of several contemporary theologians. It also examines some contemporary philosophers whose concerns have grown out of a commitment to a Kantian, utilitarian, or prescriptive type of ethics and urges that there are valuable lessons to be learned from these theologians and philosophers. At the same time it is argued that some of their concerns are the result of a mistaken idea of what it means to perform an act of supererogation. In addition, it is argued that some of their concerns can be addressed in ways that do not require a denial of the possibility of going beyond the call of duty in human life. This stage of the argument involves a discussion of virtue ethics and an examination of the concept of vocation, particularly as it has developed in Protestant thought, and illustrates the relevance of virtue and vocation to the problem of supererogation.
