Cultural Criticism by Arthur Asa Berger Pdf

Arthur Asa Berger's unique ability to translate difficult theories into accessible language makes this book an ideal introduction to cultural criticism. Berger covers the key theorists, concepts, and subject areas, from literary, sociological and psychoanalytical theories to semiotics and Marxism. Cultural Criticism breathes new life into the discipline by making these theories relevant to students' lives. The author illustrates his explanations with excerpts from classic works giving readers a sense of the important thinkers' styles and helping place them in their context. Berger also provides a comprehensive bibliography on cultural criticism for those who wish to explore the topics at greater length. Cultural Criticism is the perfect undergraduate supplemental text for such courses as media studies, literary criticism, and popular culture.

A Primer for Critics (Classic Reprint) by George Boas Pdf

Excerpt from A Primer for Critics It is with many misgivings that I publish this analysis of the main ideas of aesthetic criticism. For it was made nor in the interests of the general reader nor in those of the technical Student of philosophy. It is thus neither a book of what the French call vulgariration nor yet a contribution to scholarship as that word is usually employed. It is addressed to that group of people who enjoy the clarification of issues even when those issues do nor touch upon their professional occupation, who would prefer clarity to edification even in those fields where edification is customary, who do not object to talk ing sense even when talking sense robs their conversation of its air of profundity. Books on the fine arts are no toriously obscure, almost hermetic. This is attributable not only to the sanctity which artists have acquired in modern times but to the vocabulary in which people dis cuss their works. It was with a view to dispelling that obscurity that this Study was undertaken some years ago. Unfortunately the accomplishment of the task has led to an insistence upon distinctions which will prove trying to all but the most good-natured readers. Let the Others remember that the author is a school teacher now in his middle years who, in spite of his being a member of the post-war generation, still retains a faith in education. That may make them patient. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Primer for Forgetting by Lewis Hyde Pdf

We live in a culture that prizes memory – how much we can store, the quality of what’s preserved, how we might better document and retain the moments of our life while fighting off the nightmare of losing all that we have experienced. But what if forgetfulness were seen not as something to fear, but rather as a blessing, a balm, a path to peace and forgiveness? A Primer for Forgetting is a remarkable experiment in scholarship, autobiography and social criticism. It forges a new vision of forgetfulness by assembling fragments of art and writing from the ancient world to the modern, weighing the potential boons forgetfulness might offer the present moment as a philosophical and political force. It also turns inward, using the author’s own life and memory as a canvas upon which to extol the virtues of a concept too long taken as an evil. Drawing material from Hesiod to Jorge Luis Borges to Elizabeth Bishop to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, from myths and legends to very real and recent traumas both personal and historical, A Primer for Forgetting is a unique and remarkable synthesis that only Lewis Hyde could have produced.

A Primer for Philosophy and Education by Samuel D. Rocha Pdf

"Sam Rocha's primer reminds me of a French adage: la philo descends dans la rue-- philosophy comes to the street. Rocha's little book can be read and talked about, with profit, on the street, in the home, in the school, in the garden, anywhere the human heart beats and the human mind thinks." --David T. Hansen, Weinburg Professor in the History and Philosophy of Education, Teachers College Columbia University "Rocha gives us a compelling experience of first-hand philosophizing, in which the ordinary is shown in its powerful features, and the discipline of philosophy of education reclaims its necessity." --Cristina Cammarano, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Salisbury University "Rocha's illustrated primer is an eye-opening introduction to the philosophy of education. And, unlike too many illustrated texts, its pen and ink drawings are a thought provoking complement to this highly readable introduction." --David Mosley, Professor of Philosophy, Bellarmine University "An elegantly written invitation to students and the general reader to a frame of mind where one is ready to learn from and think about philosophy and education. Sam Rocha calls us all back, in heart-felt yet precise prose, to philosophy's ancient role of dialogue, wonder, and reflection. A joy to read and treasure." --AG Rud, Distinguished Professor, Washington State University "A charming and clearly written introduction to the philosophy of education, inspired by the writings of William James." --Graham Harman, Associate Provost for Research Administration and Professor of Philosophy, The American University in Cairo
