A Primer for Critics (Classic Reprint) by George Boas Pdf

Excerpt from A Primer for Critics It is with many misgivings that I publish this analysis of the main ideas of aesthetic criticism. For it was made nor in the interests of the general reader nor in those of the technical Student of philosophy. It is thus neither a book of what the French call vulgariration nor yet a contribution to scholarship as that word is usually employed. It is addressed to that group of people who enjoy the clarification of issues even when those issues do nor touch upon their professional occupation, who would prefer clarity to edification even in those fields where edification is customary, who do not object to talk ing sense even when talking sense robs their conversation of its air of profundity. Books on the fine arts are no toriously obscure, almost hermetic. This is attributable not only to the sanctity which artists have acquired in modern times but to the vocabulary in which people dis cuss their works. It was with a view to dispelling that obscurity that this Study was undertaken some years ago. Unfortunately the accomplishment of the task has led to an insistence upon distinctions which will prove trying to all but the most good-natured readers. Let the Others remember that the author is a school teacher now in his middle years who, in spite of his being a member of the post-war generation, still retains a faith in education. That may make them patient. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Primer of Criticism (Classic Reprint) by Eugene L. Didier Pdf

Excerpt from A Primer of Criticism American orator and the leader of the Senate, was so ignorant of literature that he once broke down in trying to quote two lines of verse that are familiar to every American schoolgirl. When the last attempt to pass an international Cpright law was before Congress, a distinguished senator could not understand how an author, who was incited to mental labor by the laws of his country, could find that such a law would act as a further incitement. He could not or would not see that it would act as a further incitement by stopping the wholesale piracy of foreign books, and thus Open a market for American literary talent. Years ago Thomas Hood said: America, in the absence of an international copyright, can never have a national literature. When such a book as A Fool's Errand reaches a sale of copies, and is pronounced a great American work by leading journals, it ceases to be a wonder that thoughtful Americans should deplore the present degenerate condition of our literary criticism. A Primer of English Literature (Classic Reprint) by Abby Willis Howes Pdf

Excerpt from A Primer of English Literature This book aims at being what its title indicates -a primer, a first book. It strives to tell simply and clearly a few things, and to bring prominently before the reader only the greatest literary names. The author has found that young readers get very little from a book which presupposes wide knowledge on their part, or which deals with elabo rate literary criticism. Much reading is done in the schools, however, and it is necessary to give pupils some chronological idea of the growth of literature and the place of authors. It is the pur pose of this book to supply that chronology in form somewhat fuller than an outline, and yet less bulky than the regular histories. While it gives no new point of view or illuminating criticisms, it hopes to meet the need of all classes of students who wish to acquire in a straightforward way the gen erally accepted facts of English literary history. Cultural Criticism by Arthur Asa Berger Pdf

Arthur Asa Berger's unique ability to translate difficult theories into accessible language makes this book an ideal introduction to cultural criticism. Berger covers the key theorists, concepts, and subject areas, from literary, sociological and psychoanalytical theories to semiotics and Marxism. Cultural Criticism breathes new life into the discipline by making these theories relevant to students' lives. The author illustrates his explanations with excerpts from classic works giving readers a sense of the important thinkers' styles and helping place them in their context. Berger also provides a comprehensive bibliography on cultural criticism for those who wish to explore the topics at greater length. Cultural Criticism is the perfect undergraduate supplemental text for such courses as media studies, literary criticism, and popular culture.

A Primer of American Literature (Classic Reprint) by Abby Willis Howes Pdf

Excerpt from A Primer of American Literature The aim of the book is to be simple, orderly, and clear; to tell a few facts in such a way that there need be no confusion in the mind of the reader. While it is hoped that the subject-matter of the book has intrinsic value, a knowledge of literature obviously comes only from study of the literature itself; therefore, primarily the book will have its greatest usefulness when taken as a guide. With this thought in view, suggestions for reading, intended mainly for students in secondary schools, are given at the ends of the chapters. More mature minds will naturally read the books mentioned in the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Principles and Methods of Literary Criticism (Classic Reprint) by Lorenzo Sears Pdf

Excerpt from Principles and Methods of Literary Criticism "In every work regard the writer's end." - Pope. An attempt to guide a class in literature in making critical estimates of their reading resulted in the following chapters. Reference was also had to the possible needs of some who intended to serve an apprenticeship in journalism, with its incidental book-reviewing; but beyond both these purposes was kept in mind the advantage of intelligent appreciation by educated readers of such literature as should appeal to mature tastes. Accordingly sundry methods and principles of criticism have been mentioned with the intention of showing that there is a choice among them, and that the best criticism promotes good literature, of which it is itself one of the highest forms. The Literary Critics by George Watson Pdf

Excerpt from The Literary Critics: A Study of English Descriptive Criticism S ome things are most readily defined by their contraries, but the ultimate condition of a literature without criticism is one that modern England has happily never known, and we must leave a stranger to speak. These are the words of the Hungarian poet Miklos Gimes, later hanged by the Kadar Government, describing intellectual life in the Socialist countries before the rising of 1956. Primer of French Literature (Classic Reprint) by George Saintsbury Pdf

Excerpt from Primer of French Literature The first edition of this little book appeared without a preface: the second may perhaps be allowed one, if only to express the Author's thanks to his critics and to the public for the reception given'to his work. Some corrections of phrase have been made, and a few errors in the dates have been rectified. That such corrections have not been more numerous is, I believe, mainly owing to the great care with which my friend Mr. Andrew Lang read the proof sheets for me and to the valuable suggestions which he made. In deference to the request of several friends an index has been added, though I myself consider the addition somewhat superfluous in the case of a book the body of which is little more than an index in itself. I have limited it to those names in connection with which something more than a mere mention will be found in the text. For the compiling of this index I owe my best thanks to Miss Emily J. Carey; while for indicating to me a somewhat important omission in a passage relating to Pascal I am obliged to M. Paul Stapfer, Professor in the Faculty of Letters at Grenoble. Excerpt from Some Principles of Literary Criticism The preceding chapters do not pretend to cover the entire field of criticism. Nor to lay down a definite critical method. But assume that all real criticism must be something more than individual impression. And aim to set forth some principles that must always underlie such criticism. Literature and Criticism (Classic Reprint) by H. Coombes Pdf

Excerpt from Literature and Criticism The validity of this little book depends upon the belief that the character of a writer's whole achievement can only be felt and assessed by responding sensitively to the way in which he uses words, and that the capacity to make such a response can be formed or greatly enhanced by a training in literary criticism. D. H. Lawrence says some excellent things about critics and criticism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Primer of Wordsworth by Laurie Magnus Pdf

Excerpt from A Primer of Wordsworth: With a Critical Essay He changed from the pioneer of revolution to the prophet of freedom. There was more of the revolutionary than of the prophet in William Wordsworth, the child. "Fair seed-time had my soul," he writes, and he tells us how from babyhood itself he enjoyed the licence of the open air. Derwent, the river on which Cockermouth, his birthplace, stands, murmured his lullabies even in his nurse's arms, "giving me, Amid the fretful dwellings of mankind, A foretaste, a dim earnest, of the calm That Nature breathes among the hills and groves" (i. 278). And when he arrived at the discretion of walking, the wise young parents respected the savagery of childhood: "Oh, many a time have I, a five years' child, In a small mill-race severed from his stream, Made one long bathing of a summer's day; Basked in the sun, and plunged and basked again Alternate, all a summer's day, or scoured The sandy fields, leaping through flowery groves Of yellow ragwort; or, when rock and hill, The woods, and distant Skiddaw's lofty height, Were bronzed with deepest radiance, stood alone Beneath the sky, as if I had been born On Indian plains, and from my mother's hut Had run abroad in wantonness, to sport A naked savage, in the thunder shower" (i. 288). He was not always alone. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Elementary Guide to Literary Criticism A glance at the table of contents will clearly reveal the plan. The work is divided into three parts, the first of which treats of fundamental principles. In three chapters the nature of criticism, the relation of the author to his work, and the aesthetic principles underlying literary art are briefly discussed. The facts and principles here presented are designed to give a clearer and deeper insight into the nature and processes of criticism. English Literary Criticism by C. E. Vaughan Pdf

Excerpt from English Literary Criticism: With an Introduction In the following pages my aim has been to sketch the development of criticism, and particularly of critical method, in England; and to illustrate each phase of its growth by one or two samples taken from the most typical writers. I have, in no way attempted to make a full collection of what might be thought the most striking pieces of criticism to be found in our literature.
