An English Governess in the Great War by Sophie De Schaepdrijver,Tammy M. Proctor Pdf

An Englishwoman of no particular fame living in World War I Brussels started a secret diary in September 1916. Aware that her thoughts could put her in danger with German authorities, she never wrote her name on the diary and ran to hide it every time the "Boches" came to inspect the house. The diary survived the war and ended up in a Belgian archive, forgotten for nearly a century until historians Sophie De Schaepdrijver and Tammy M. Proctor discovered it and the remarkable woman who wrote it: Mary Thorp, a middle-aged English governess working for a wealthy Belgian-Russian family in Brussels. As a foreigner and a woman, Mary Thorp offers a unique window into life under German occupation in Brussels (the largest occupied city of World War I) and in the uncertain early days of the peace. Her diary describes the roar of cannons in the middle of the night, queues for food and supplies in the shops, her work for a wartime charity, news from an interned godson in Germany, along with elegant dinners with powerful diplomats and the educational progress of her beloved charges. Mary Thorp's sharp and bittersweet reflections testify to the daily strains of living under enemy occupation, comment on the events of the war as they unfolded, and ultimately serve up a personal story of self-reliance and endurance. De Schaepdrijver and Proctor's in-depth commentary situate this extraordinary woman in her complex political, social, and cultural context, thus providing an unusual chance to engage with the Great War on an intimate and personal level.

Anna Haag and Her Secret Diary of the Second World War by Edward Timms Pdf

How was it possible for a well-educated nation to support a regime that made it a crime to think for yourself? This was the key question for the Stuttgart-based author Anna Haag (1888-1982), the democratic feminist whose anti-Nazi diaries are analysed in this book. Like Victor Klemperer, she deconstructed German political propaganda day by day, giving her critique a gendered focus by challenging the ethos of masculinity that sustained the Nazi regime. This pioneering study interprets her diaries, secretly written in twenty notebooks now preserved at the Stuttgart City Archive, as a fascinating source for the study of everyday life in the Third Reich. The opening sections sketch the paradigms that shaped Haag's creativity, analysing the impact of the First World War and the feminist and pacifist commitments that influenced her literary and journalistic writings. Extensive quotations from the diaries are provided, with English translations, to illustrate her responses to the cataclysms that followed the rise of Hitler, from the military conquests and Jewish deportations to the devastation of strategic bombing. The book concludes with a chapter that traces the links between Haag's critique of military tyranny and her contribution to post-war reconstruction.

The True German by Werner Otto Müller-Hill Pdf

A recently discovered diary held by a German military judge from 1944 to 1945 sheds new light on anti-Hitler sentiments inside the German army. Werner Otto Müller-Hill served as a military judge in the Werhmacht during World War II. From March 1944 to the summer of 1945, he kept a diary, recording his impressions of what transpired around him as Germany hurtled into destruction—what he thought about the fate of the Jewish people, the danger from the Bolshevik East once an Allied victory was imminent, his longing for his home and family and, throughout it, a relentless disdain and hatred for the man who dragged his beloved Germany into this cataclysm, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party. Müller-Hill calls himself a German nationalist, the true Prussian idealist who was there before Hitler and would be there after. Published in Germany and France, Müller-Hill's diary The True German has been hailed as a unique document, praised for its singular candor and uncommon insight into what the German army was like on the inside. It is an extraordinary testament to a part of Germany's people that historians are only now starting to acknowledge and fills a gap in our knowledge of WWII.

Hirschfeld by Geoffrey Brooks,Wolfgang Hirschfeld Pdf

Whilst there have been many memoirs written by U-boat commanders of the Second World War, a book such as this, based upon the diaries of a senior Petty Officer telegraphist, written in 'real time' is something very special. Wolfgang Hirschfeld, whose diaries Geoffrey Brooks has translated is a born story teller. The principal chapters describe his experiences during six war patrols in U-109, in which he served as the senior telegraphist. His is a tale which covers the whole kaleidescope of emotions shared by men at war—a story of immense courage and fortitude, of remarkable comradeship born of the dangers, frustrations and privations shared and of transitory moments of triumph. Throughout runs a vein of humour, without which resistance to stress would have been virtually impossible. We get to know one of Germany's great U-boat aces, 'Ajax' Bleichrodt, holder of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and, in a special biographical appendix, learn how he finally cracked under the strain. The role of Admiral Karl Donitz, the dynamic commander of the U-boat service, so fascinatingly described by Hirschfeld, is of special interest—not least because even this dedicated Nazi had clearly realized by September, 1942, that the war was fast being lost. In 1944 Hirschfeld was promoted Warrant Officer and found himself on a large, schnorkel-equipped boat (U-234) heading for Japan with a load of high technology equipment and, in addition, a quantity of uranium ore. The possible significance of that uranium has been deeply researched by Geoffrey Brooks and is discussed in a second appendix.

The Secret Diary of a World War 2 WAC by James Meitner Pdf

The Secret Diary of a World War 2 WAC was rediscovered and published just in time to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War 2! This book, Marion's original letters home and, and her diary provide us with a fascinating early history of the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC). They deliver insights into the lives of some of the first women soldiers who served in the army between 1942 and 1945. Marion Meitner enlisted in July 1942 in the WAAC just six short weeks after President Roosevelt established it. She was the first woman from Waterloo, Wisconsin to become a Waac and among the first 1,000 women who joined this new women's military organization. Marion kept a diary of her army life while she served at the first WAAC Training Center in Fort Des Moines, Iowa, the WAAC Training Center in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, and after she transferred to Camp Huckstep near Cairo, Egypt. Marion's diary provides us with a day by day understanding of the life of one woman who served in the army during World War 2. The Wacs in Egypt enjoyed active social lives while they worked with the thousands of lonely soldiers stationed there. They hitched rides on military C-46, C-47, and B-17 aircraft to join the flyboys while visiting the Suez Canal for a quick swim, or to enjoy weekend excursions to exotic places such as Benghazi, Casablanca, and Tel Aviv. Many took full advantage of the inexpensive travel opportunities offered by the army to visit Palestine, the Holy Land, Cyprus, and other exotic middle east destinations. Marion's diary, her letters, and this book provide us with detailed insights into the life of the first women who joined the army over 75 years ago.
