The History of Medieval Europe by Lynn Thorndike,James Thomson Shotwell Pdf

Excerpt from The History of Medieval Europe Inasmuch as emigrants from all parts and from all races of Europe have long since been coming to the United States and becoming American citizens, it has seemed worth while to include the states and racial groups of central and eastern Europe, as well as the richer medieval history of those western European lands whose institutions and culture have thus far had the greatest influence upon our own. In conformity with present tendencies in historical writing, economic and social conditions are given due attention, and many minor details of military and political history are omitted. In these days of tottering thrones I have even ventured to lay the axe at the root of absolutism and to dispense with genealogical tables. Contemporary events sadly remind us that the age of wars is not past; but they have also demonstrated that an intensive study of Cæsar's Commentaries and the tactics of Hastings and Crécy is of little use even to the modern military specialist; while they have further reminded us that in the art of the past there are precious models and inspirations, whose loss is almost irreparable. Since man is a reasoning and emotional being, it is unfair to the past actors and uninteresting to the present readers of history merely to chronicle events without some indication of the ideas and ideals behind them as well as of the personalities that produced them. But discussion of economic and intellectual influences should not be carried so far as to reduce the narrative of events in political history to a mere skeleton. If wars and politics are to be discussed at all, they should be treated with sufficient fullness to insure clearness and interest. The background of physical geography is frequently referred to and described. In the maps the aim has been to omit confusing detail and to keep them in close accord with the text. As a rule all places mentioned in the text and no others are given in the accompanying maps. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Medieval and Modern History (Classic Reprint) by Hutton Webster Pdf

Excerpt from Medieval and Modern History This book, as the title indicates, covers both the Middle Ages and modern times. The chapters treating the period from the sixth to the seventeenth century are reproduced from my Early European History, with minor modifications and with additional maps and illustrations. The entire work has been written since the outbreak of the World War, and its probable consequences have been kept constantly in mind. If it be true, as Bishop Stubbs once said, that nothing in the past is dead to the man who would learn how the present comes to be what it is, then surely the prime business of the author of a text-book dealing with European history is to make plain the remoter causes, as well as the immediate ante cedents, of a struggle epochal in the life of humanity. How far I have succeeded in doing so must be left to the reader's judgment. The Suggestions for Further Study contain a classified and annotated bibliography of those historical works which appear to be reasonably well adapted to the needs of pupils in secondary schools. References to the appropriate chapters of my Readings in Medieval and M odern History are also inserted in footnotes. This volume consists of extracts from the sources, chiefly of a biographical or narrative character. As stated in the preface, Each chapter deals with a single epoch or personality and presents the work of a single author. The passages quoted are long enough to make a definite impression on the reader, thus avoiding the scrappy effect necessarily produced by a set of short, unrelated extracts. Since many of the selections are good literature as well as good history, I hope that students will be tempted to turn to the original sources from which excerpts have been taken, and to read in them at length for their own enjoyment. Mediaeval and Modern History (Classic Reprint) by Philip Van Ness Myers Pdf

Excerpt from Mediaeval and Modern History The revised text of my Medieval and Modern History has already appeared in a two-volume edition under the titles of T lie Middle Ages and The Modern Age. It is here presented, somewhat abridged, in a single illustrated book designed as a companion volume to my revised Ancient History. The lists of books for further reading and study appended to the different chapters are in the main a selection from the fuller bibliographies of the earlier revised edition. The series of maps includes all the more important ones of that impression, besides fifteen new colored maps, eleven of which have been engraved expressly for the present work. The two entitled respectively The Danelaw and Angevin Dominions are taken by kind permission from Professor Edward P. Cheyney's A Short History of England, while Europe after 1815 and Europe at the Present Time are through like courtesy drawn from Professor James Harvey Robinson's An Introduction to the History of Western E rope. A Short History of Medieval Europe by Oliver J. Thatcher Pdf

Excerpt from A Short History of Medieval Europe This "Short History of Medieval Europe" is an abridgment of a larger work, "Europe in the Middle Age," prepared by Dr. Ferdinand Schwill and myself, and is intended for use as a text-book in High and Preparatory Schools, as well as for the general reader who wishes, in a summary way, to acquaint himself with the progress of events and the course of development in Europe during the Middle Age (350-1500). The teacher and the reader who wish to pursue the subject further are referred to the more comprehensive work named above, as well as to the following works: Adams: Civilization during the Middle Ages, especially in Relation to Modern Civilization, 1894. Emerton : An Introduction to the Study of the Middle Ages, 1891. Emerton : Medieval Europe, 1894. Bryce : The Holy Roman Empire. Sohm : Outlines of Church History. With a Preface by Professor H. M. Gwatkin, M. A. I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to my pupils, Mr. James W. Linn, for substantial aid in the publication of the book, and Miss Lina Moxley, for the preparation of the index. A Source Book for Medieval History by Oliver J. Thatcher Pdf

Excerpt from A Source Book for Medieval History: Selected Documents Illustrating, the History of Europe in the Middle Age The use of original sources in the teaching of mediaeval history is still hampered by the scarcity of material adapted to the needs of the student. This situation is sufficient excuse for the publication of a new book of translations of important mediaeval documents, if such a book does more than reedit old material if it presents, along with the usual and familiar sources, documents not elsewhere translated or brings together documents not otherwise easily accessible. We believe the present work does that, and that it also makes the use of this material more practicable by giving fuller notes and explanations than has usually been attempted. Our purpose in general has been to present material touching only what may be called the most important matters (persons, events, movements, institutions, and conditions) of the whole mediaeval period. We have not tried to make a complete source-book for the period, but only to offer in usable form illustrative material which may be of service to both teacher and student in general or information courses. Each document is meant to illustrate or illumine one particular thing. While it may throw light on many other things, the teacher should be warned not to attempt to deduce from these few documents the whole history and life of the Middle Age. We are fully aware that in the choice of documents we shall not please all. Many of the documents here given are clearly essential and must be found in such a book as we have tried to make. Concerning all such there can be no question. As to the others, there are hundreds of documents which would serve our purpose quite as well as those we have used, perhaps even better. In making our selections we have been guided by a great variety of considerations which it would be useless to enumerate. While another would have made a different selection, we believe that the documents which we present really illustrate the matter in question, and therefore will be found satisfactory. With this we shall be quite content. The necessity of selection has also led us to omit the political history of France and England. Mediaeval Europe by Ephraim Emerton Pdf

Excerpt from Mediaeval Europe: 814-1300 The present volume owes its origin to repeated requests, coming from widely scattered and widely different sources, that I would go on with the history of continental Europe from the point where it was left at the close of a little book published in the year 1888. That earlier book, An Intro duction to the Study of the Middle Ages, was written in the h0pe that it might fill a place, at that time unoccupied, between the manuals of Roman history and those upon mediaeval times. This hope has been fairly realized, and the many kind expressions of good-will it has brought me have given me confidence for this new venture. New Medieval and Modern History (Classic Reprint) by Samuel Bannister Harding Pdf

Excerpt from New Medieval and Modern History The continent of Europe is divided into three distinct parts. (i) The southern portion comprises the great peninsulas of Greece, Italy, and Spain. It is cut off from the central mass by an almost unbroken mountain chain, formed by the Pyrenees, the Alps, and their eastern continuations. (2) North of this lies a central land mass, stretching east and west across the con tinent, which broadens out in the east to form the great plain of Russia. (3) Beyond this lie the British Isles and the Scan dinavian peninsula. These lands are separated from the central portion by the English Channel, the North Sea, and the Baltic Sea, which is a sort of secondary Mediterranean. A History of the Middle Ages (Classic Reprint) by Dana Carleton Munro Pdf

Excerpt from A History of the Middle Ages In this text-book three subjects have been emphasized: first, the work of the Christian Church, the greatest of the civilizing agencies; second, the debt which we owe to the Byzantine and Arabic civilizations; third, the life of the times. While endeavoring to subordinate mere facts and dates, I have intended to introduce those with which a pupil should be familiar. It is impossible to name the sources to which I am indebted; as I have formed my opinions gradually, during thirteen years in which I have been engaged in studying and teaching medieval history. In preparing the maps I have profited greatly by the admirable Oxford Historical Atlas of Modern Europe. Dr. A. F. Nightingale, of Chicago, Mr. F. L. Thompson, of New York, and Dr. Caroline Colvin, one of my students, have read the whole manuscript and made many helpful suggestions. Prof. E .H. Castle and Dr. A. C. Howland, of the Teachers College, Dr. E. A. Singer, of Philadelphia, Prof. Wilfred H. Munro, of Brown University, Prof. E. P. Cheyney, and Dr. W. E. Lingelbach, of the University of Pennsylvania, have read one or more chapters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
