A Study of Coleridge's Three Great Poems - Christabel, Kubla Khan and the Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Warren Stevenson Pdf

This thoroughly revised and augmented edition of Stevenson's Nimbus of Glory, originally published in softcover in 1983. This edition updates this scholarly and critical work, making it accessible to a new generation of scholars. It includes a new chapter entitled "The Case of Missing Captain: Power Politics in 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. " the study as a whole argues that the impact of the personality of William Wordsworth is much more profound than has previously been realized, and that Coleridge's originality as an artist is able to withstand the assaults of time and critics.

KUBLA KHAN: A VISION IN A DREAM & CHRISTABEL by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Pdf

"Christabel" is a long narrative poem in two parts. Coleridge planned three additional parts, but these were never completed. The story of Christabel concerns a central female character of the same name and her encounter with a stranger called Geraldine, who claims to have been abducted from her home by a band of rough men. Coleridge aimed to write Christabel using an accentual metrical system, based on the count of only accents: even though the number of syllables in each line can vary from four to twelve, the number of accents per line never deviates from four. "Kubla Khan; or, A Vision in a Dream" is a poem written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. According to Coleridge's Preface the poem was composed one night after he experienced an opium-influenced dream after reading a work describing Xanadu, the summer palace of the Mongol ruler and Emperor of China Kublai Khan. Upon waking, he set about writing lines of poetry that came to him from the dream until he was interrupted by a person from Porlock. The poem could not be completed according to its original 200-300 line plan as the interruption caused him to forget the lines. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 - 1834) was an English poet, literary critic and philosopher who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets.

Coleridge and Textual Instability by Jack Stillinger Pdf

Jack Stillinger establishes and documents the existence of numerous different authoritative versions of Coleridge's best-known poems: sixteen or more of The Eolian Harp, for example, eighteen of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and comparable numbers for This Lime-Tree Bower, Frost at Midnight, Kubla Khan, Christabel, and Dejection: An Ode. Such multiplicity of versions raises interesting theoretical and practical questions about the constitution of the Coleridge canon, the ontological identity of any specific work in the canon, the editorial treatment of Coleridge's works, and the ways in which multiple versions complicate interpretation of the poems as a unified (or, as the case may be, disunified) body of work. Providing much new information about the texts and production of Coleridge's major poems, Stillinger's study offers intriguing new theories about the nature of authorship and the constitution of literary works.

Coleridge: Poems by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Pdf

Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) was the master impresario of English Romanticism -- an enormously erudite and tireless critic, lecturer, and polemicist who almost single-handedly created the intellectual climate in which the Romantic movement was received and understood. He was also, in poems such as 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,' 'Christabel,' and 'Kubla Khan.' the most uncanny, surreal, and startling of the great English poets.

Kubla Khan by Samuel Coleridge Pdf

Though left uncompleted, “Kubla Khan” is one of the most famous examples of Romantic era poetry. In it, Samuel Coleridge provides a stunning and detailed example of the power of the poet’s imagination through his whimsical description of Xanadu, the capital city of Kublai Khan’s empire. Samuel Coleridge penned “Kubla Khan” after waking up from an opium-induced dream in which he experienced and imagined the realities of the great Mongol ruler’s capital city. Coleridge began writing what he remembered of his dream immediately upon waking from it, and intended to write two to three hundred lines. However, Coleridge was interrupted soon after and, his memory of the dream dimming, was ultimately unable to complete the poem. The Creative Mind in Coleridge's Poetry by Kathleen M. Wheeler Pdf

Five of Coleridge's major poems are given fresh scrutiny in this arresting study. One of its unusual features is the attention given the Preface to "Kubla Khan," the Gloss to The Ancient Mariner, and other prose accompaniments to the poems usually dismissed as extraneous. Devices such as these, the author argues, are strategically employed by Coleridge in an effort to engage the reader in a fully imaginative response. Kathleen Wheeler elucidates the texts in terms of aesthetic experience and also in terms of the philosophical principles that inform them, showing how Coleridge's theories of mind and imagination function within the poems and shape their design. A subtle and gifted reader of poetry, she enriches our understanding of poems we thought we knew well, and provides insights along the way into the creative process.
