India is a home to the largest population of poor in the world and out of its total population there are nearly 75 million poor house-holds in India, thus it has become the prime obligation of the regulators to provide some definite solution for poverty alleviation. The role of Micro Financing Institutions in economic empowerment with special reference to Changanacherry taluk was examined. Key challenges facing MFIs today that are affecting their impact on poverty alleviation were seem to be an over-emphasis on financial sustainability over social objectives, and a failure of many MFIs to work with the poorest in society. Overall, Micro financing institutions has provided important contributions to the development world. It was found that savings are vital and perhaps more important to people, that they are probably better served by direct subsidies rather than loans. Although micro financing institutions offer financial assistance to the society and prove itself a useful tool in economic empowerment.

The most widely published feature of Kudumbasree is the setting up of micro enterprises using local resources as well as skills. Micro enterprise development is viewed as an opportunity for providing gainful employment to the people below poverty line and thereby improving their income and living standards. Micro finance in India started in the early 1980s with small efforts or forming informal SHG to provide access to much needed saving and credit services to the marginal population more importantly in rural areas. National bodies like the Small Industrial development Bank of India (SIBI) and NABARD are devoting significant time and financial resource to micro finance sector. The main objectives of this study 1) to identify important applications of micro finance among members in Kudumbasree, 2) to find out whether micro finance influences economic development of women, 3) to get insight about micro finance activities. A well-structured questionnaire was prepared to collect primary data. The questionnaire for this study was developed partly on the basis of existing literature and partly from the opinion of experts in the field by keeping in mind the scope and objectives of the study. Microcredit and women's empowerment by Samjhana Wagle Pdf

Micro-credit has been taken as a prominent tool for poverty alleviation and women's empowerment. This book has presented the double-edged claim of microcredit proponents that microcredit not only supports rural poor to come out of poverty, it also empowers poor rural women in particular. This book is mainly grounded on research based on Bandipur Rural Municipality of Nepal. It has made the study of women from 3 settlements of Bandipur, who had availed microcredit facilities from some microcredit providing institutions or organizations in Bandipur. The data has been analyzed through qualitative data analysis under which both descriptive and explanatory methods. The data analysis is made on the basis of caste/ethnic group. The results showed that most of the females who availed the facility of microcredit finally got socioeconomic empowerment through acquiring the access to capital, control over resources, self-esteem, confidence level, decision making power, etc. Results are varied on Dalit, Janajati and Brahmin/Chhetri women. The findings showed that microcredit has significant impact on the upliftment of socio-economic empowerment of the borrowers of Bandipur. The income pattern of the respondent women has been changed. Daily wage earning and agricultural production were the main source of income before joining the program but after joining the microcredit program the sources of income shifted to small scale business, sale of livestock product and agricultural product. Entrepreneurship in microcredit beneficiary women has been increased. Apart from the changing income pattern, role of women in decision making about the resources mobilization for household activities, participation in societal affairs has also been increased. The economic dependency had restricted women in decision making power in all the spheres not only economical but also in other family and social affairs. But it has been changed now. Since, women are capable to generate regular income from their small enterprises; their dependency on male for money is reduced. Women's confidence and social status has increased after involvement in MC programs. Microcredit, though an effective poverty alleviating instrument, is not suitable for all categories of the poor. For those trapped in chronic poverty, no assets base to protect themselves from the countless webs of shocks, microcredit can be ineffective and sometimes counterproductive. Some cases of Dalit settlement have proved it.

Thus, microfinance programs have been considered as one of the main instruments in livelihood improvement in recent development agenda. Microfinance comprises the provision of financial services including credit and other facilities like savings, insurance, and transfer services to poor household. The study was conducted in Geniji-Dalecho and Bulbulo kebeles among 35 target kebeles of the OCSSCO. The main objective of the study is to identify the contribution of OCSSCO in improving household livelihood through providing credit. Further, the study used both primary and secondary data sources. The primary data was collected with semi-structured interview and focus group discussion from sampled respondents; whereas, secondary data gathered from different documents of the microfinance institution that exists in the study area. Stratified random sampling was used to select 60 respondents (35 beneficiaries and 25 non-beneficiaries) based on the principle of probability proportional to size (pps). While improving livelihood, microfinance (OCSSCO) credit service increases the income of the clients; which, in turn, enable them educating their children and improves their nutritional status. Inferential statistics such as crosstabs; independent sample t-test and custom table are used in data analysis. Descriptive statistics like frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were employed to analyze the data. Chi-square (for categorical variables) and t-test (for continuous variables) were used to see the significance of the relationships of independent variables with dependent variables. Moreover, the qualitative data was analyzed by describing, summarizing and interpreting for further clarity. Finally, conclusion and recommendation were made based on the findings obtained from result and discussion. Key words: assets, client, role, microfinance institution, livelihood,

Microcredit and Women's Empowerment by Aminul Faraizi,Taskinur Rahman,Jim McAllister Pdf

Using a case study of Bangladesh, and based on a long term participatory observation method, this book investigates claims of the success of microcredit, as well as the critiques of it, in the context of women’s empowerment. It confronts the distinction between women’s increasing wealth as a consequence of the success of microcredit programmes and their apparent non-commensurate empowerment, looking at two organisations (the Grameen Bank and the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee) as they operate in two localities in rural Bangladesh, in order to discover how enrichment and empowerment are often confused. The book goes on to establish that the well-publicised success stories of the microcredit programme are blown out of proportion, and that the dynamics of collective responsibility for repayment of loans by a group of women borrowers – usually seen to be a tool for the success of microcredit – is in fact no less repressive than traditional debt collectors. This book makes a contribution to development debates; challenging adherents to more closely specify those conditions under which microcredit does indeed have validity, as well as providing insights relevant to South Asian Studies and Development Studies.

Social Inclusion in Microfinance Cooperative Societies by Man Bishwakarma Pdf

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Economics - Finance, Tribhuvan University (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences), course: PhD, language: English, abstract: Microfinance, in these days, has become a global concern. Generally, microfinance means the financial services to the poor. Most of the micro-finance initiatives have economic goals of reducing poverty and tackling the marginalization of the poor particularly the deprived section of the society. Microfinance is a mix of financial and social intermediation. It was commenced through cooperative from the mid-19th century with initiating the saving of 28 pounds from a group of factory workers of ‘Rochdale society of equitable pioneers’ in the United Kingdom. In Germany, Freidrich Raiffeisen introduced the community based credit cooperative society in 1864. It was the first Credit Organization in the world. In Asia, the concept of cooperative introduced officially in 1904 from India and further extended to other countries. Similarly, the popular model of microfinance developed in latter century is Grameen Bank model pronounced by Muhammad Yunus in 1976. Social exclusion discourses developed in response to criticisms of the term poverty and describe the process that leads to individuals or groups being wholly or partly excluded from full participation in society. Nepal remained as Hindu kingdom for a long time; most social and cultural value has been dominated by the caste hierarchical system. Age long caste-based practices made “Dalits” most deprived in the society. Building inclusive financial system has been the global agenda since the start of twenty first century. Likewise, social inclusion has been the top political agenda around the globe. Social Inclusion Factor established in this research is a noble tool to measure the magnitude of inclusiveness. One of the major findings is that inclusiveness promotes sustainability. Likewise, small income changes for the very poor have proportionately much greater impacts on livelihood, than those for the better off. The research has come out with some recommendations with some new approaches in microfinance to make it more inclusive. Credit-first approach to the most deprived groups based on analyzing poverty status of the clients is one. Likewise, providing credit plus intermediation on the basis of individual capacity deprivation is other recommendation which emphasizes on individual intervention to the most deprived clients/members. Considering the complexities of MFC it has structured an approach called “community owned microfinancing” to reach down to the poorest of the poor .

The Triangle of Microfinance by Manfred Zeller,Richard L. Meyer Pdf

Since the 1980s when the microfinance revolution began, much has been accomplished, but the field became more refined in the 1990s as a result of shifts in paradigms, strategies, and development practices. This volume addresses the three policy objectives that now occupy those who wish to use credit as a development tool: financial sustainability of microfinance institutions, outreach to the poor, and welfare impact. Inevitable tradeoffs exist among these objectives, and the book advances an analytical framework that assists students of and experts in microfinance to identify the tradeoffs and synergies at the institutional level and in the policy environment. The book features a wealth of empirical data and innovative analytical studies, and critically discusses the role of public support for microfinance institutions (MFIs) in light of the social costs and benefits generated by such financial systems. The book is organized into five parts. The first discusses the demand for and access to financial services by the poor, emphasizing that demand-oriented, pro-poor financial services are crucial in reaching the poor. The second is concerned with two of the criteria used to evaluate MFIs—outreach and financial sustainability. The third features innovative econometric studies seeking to evaluate the impact of MFIs at the household level. The fourth looks at the role of both public- and private-sector institutions in developing sustainable financial systems. And the fifth summarizes implications for policy and research. Given the lack of sound, empirical literature on microfinance, this volume is sure to advance knowledge and research methodology in the field.

The Microfinance Impact by Ranjula Bali Swain Pdf

Financial inclusion through microfinance has become a powerful force in improving the living conditions of poor farmers, rural non-farm enterprises and other vulnerable groups. In its unique ability to link the existing extensive network of India’s rural bank branches with the Self Help Groups (SHG), the National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has covered up to 97 million poor households by March 2010 under its Self Help Group Bank Linkage Programme. Policy-makers have proclaimed SHGs as ‘‘the most potent initiative ... for delivering financial services to the poor in a sustainable manner." This book presents a comprehensive scientific assessment of the impact of the Self Help Group Bank Linkage Programme (SBLP) on the member households. The book discusses wide-ranging topics, including the rural financial sector in India, the history and structure of the SBLP, the impact methodologies, the economic and social impact of microfinance, its role in building assets while reducing poverty and vulnerability, the role of women and their empowerment, training and accumulation of human capital and policy implications of lessons learned. The empirical results show that vulnerability of the more mature SHG members declines significantly. Vulnerability also falls for villages with better infrastructure and for SHGs that are formed by NGOs and linked by banks. The results strongly demonstrate that on average, there is a significant increase in the empowerment of the female participants. The economic impact of SBLP is found to be the most empowering. Greater autonomy and changes in social attitudes also lead to female empowerment. The investigation further reveals that training (especially business training) has a definite positive impact on assets but not on income. The impact of training can be improved through better infrastructure (as in paved roads), linkage model type, and the training organiser. Bridging the gap in the existing literature and between academics and practitioners, this book moves beyond the usual theoretical issues in the impact assessment literature and draws on new developments in methodology. It will be of interest to academics, development practitioners and students of economics, political science, sociology, public policy and development studies.

The Microfinance Mirage by Esayas Bekele Geleta Pdf

Microfinance has long been considered a development strategy that can correct the failure of the global credit market and address the financial needs of the poor enabling them to create and run profitable business enterprises. The Microfinance Mirage argues that this neo-liberal oriented analysis overemphasises the economic argument whilst ignoring the cultural roots of inequality and subordination. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted among rural credit clients in the Northern region of Ethiopia, Esayas Bekele Geleta provides a nuanced critical analysis of microfinance challenging the common assumption that it facilitates the building of social capital, poverty reduction and the empowerment of women. Making a unique contribution to our further understanding of the microfinance industry the research shows that, in some cases, microfinance can result in the disintegration of pre-existing relationships and in the disruption and destruction of the livelihoods of the poor. Exploring the impact of microfinance in one of the poorest regions of sub-Saharan Africa, this book demonstrates its potential and problems and shows the complex and contradictory social and cultural environments in which projects are often located.
