Anophthalmia by Thomas E. Johnson Pdf

This book provides a comprehensive review on the surgical care of patients requiring removal of an eye, as well as consequent functional and cosmetic rehabilitation. In addition to covering the crafting of ocular prosthetics, Anophthalmia: The Expert's Guide to Medical and Surgical Management also addresses the psychological and physical adjustments to losing an eye, and adapting to that loss. Divided into five parts, Anophthalmia functions as a go-to reference for ophthalmologists and oculoplastic surgeons. The book begins by laying out the clinical foundations and history of anophthalmia. Part II and III discuss surgical removal techniques, prosthesis fitting and maintenance, congenital anophthalmia, infections and inflammations, and newer surgical techniques such as osseointegration after orbital exenteration. Finally, the book concludes with chapters on prosthetic options including scleral shells, keratopigmentation procedures, and cosmetic contact lenses. Unique in content, Anophthalmia is a vital resource for practicing ophthalmologists, oculoplastic surgeons, and all medical professionals who care for patients with surgical and traumatic loss of the eye and orbital tissues. Additionally, sufficient detail and explanation make this work accessible to those in training, such as medical students, ophthalmology residents, and fellows.

MIGS by Malik Kahook Pdf

With a revolution in the surgical management of mild to moderate glaucoma, new procedures allow for the use of microinvasive techniques that avoid disruption of the conjunctiva and formation of a bleb. These approaches range from laser therapies targeting the outflow system of the eye to the implantation of miniature devices in Schlemm’s canal or the suprachoroidal space. The emergence of this new branch of glaucoma surgery, often coupled with micro-incisional cataract surgery, requires the practicing surgeon to learn about anatomical nuances to ensure success. MIGS: Advances in Glaucoma Surgery will aid the novice resident as well as the seasoned ophthalmic surgeon facing these new issues in glaucoma treatment. The book addresses preoperative patient selection advice, intraoperative pearls for success, and post operative management skills, which are some of the important aspects of the process towards the adoption of MIGS. Why you will want to read MIGS: Advances in Glaucoma Surgery: • Forward thinking contributions from seasoned MIGS experts who have intimate knowledge of the devices benefits and potential pitfalls in their use • Basic knowledge is provided that will allow each surgeon to tailor their treatment plan while leveling the learning curve • Assists in indentifying patients with a milder form of the disease and higher target pressures who may benefit from the MIGS devices MIGS: Advances in Glaucoma Surgery is the first book of its kind to cover the range of devices in this arena using expert contributors and offering real world pearls for practice that can be used in the operating room. Practicing cataract and glaucoma physicians, residents, and fellows will benefit from this timely resource as the thought process for how to treat glaucoma has advanced.

Simulation in Healthcare Education by Harry Owen Pdf

Simulation in healthcare education has a long history, yet in many ways, we have been reinventing the wheel during the last 25 years. Historically, simulators have been much more than simple models, and we can still learn from aspects of simulation used hundreds of years ago. This book gives a narrative history of the development of simulators from the early 1700s to the middle of the 20th century when simulation in healthcare appeared to all but die out. It is organized around the development of simulation in different countries and includes at the end a guide to simulators in museums and private collections throughout the world. The aim is to increase understanding of simulation in the professional education of healthcare providers by exploring the historical context of simulators that were developed in the past, what they looked like, how they were used, and examples of simulator use that led to significant harm and an erosion of standards. The book is addressed to the healthcare simulation community and historians of medicine. The latter in particular will appreciate the identification and use of historic sources written in Latin, German, Italian, French, Polish and Spanish as well as English.

Ophthalmic Surgery a Treatise on Surgical Operations Pertaining to the Eye and Its Appendages by Charles H. Beard Pdf

Excerpt from Ophthalmic Surgery a Treatise on Surgical Operations Pertaining to the Eye and Its Appendages: With Chapters, on Para-Operative Technic and Management of Instruments The selection of the matters discussed in the following pages and the manner of treating them are the results of the careful study and practical application of the involved principles made in hospitals, dispensaries, and in private practice, extending over a period of twenty-six years. They began while the author was a student under Agnew and Knapp, in 1883, were later continued in England and on the Continent of Europe, and have ever since been diligently prosecuted. There has been no separate work on the surgery of the eye published in the United States for nearly half a century, and but little written upon the subject in connection with the more general treatises on ophthalmology, if we except the admirable contribution of Knapp to the System of Norris and Oliver some twelve years ago. The object here has been to supply a work that would embody not only what experience has taught and judgment prompted as being the more valued measures of all countries, but, in particular, those of our own country. The presentation of portions devoted to the history of the different procedures is deemed of great importance, but to keep them from appearing obtrusive they have been made as concise as practicable. The classification followed has seemed the logical one to adopt. The chapter on the extraction of foreign bodies from the interior of the eye has been placed in a class of its own instead of with the operations upon the globe.
