A Tale Told by an Idiot by N.C.C. McGowan Pdf

In this quasi-French farce masquerading as a novel, we meet Courtney Farquhar Tremayne, one hundred years young in the year 2000 and writing his memoirs about his ten odd (and you can believe that they were exceedingly odd) years touring with a second-rate vaudeville troupe (from approximately 1926 to 1936). Meet all of the interesting characters he knew from that magical medium now long departed. There are Bud and Boz, a dog act (Bud is the trainer and Boz the dog, although it was said that some were loathe to tell the difference). Then, there is one of the strangest acts ever to be seen on the vaudeville stage, Nick Knack Paddywack and his Knockabout Kids, a family acrobatic and comedy act. Meet Malachi and Alewyn Malarkey, Irelands version of George Burns and Gracie Allen. Also on board is Charles Mammy Kaufman, a blackface minstrel singer (a type of act no longer seen on any stage) whose not-so-secret secret is that he is, contrary to the convention of the day for these mammy singers, actually black. Then, there is Kelfer Milius, the pompous star actor of the show. And lastly is the beautiful and alluring (to Courtney, anyway) Prudence Bernadette, the shows star actress. Follow them and all these other vaudeville misfits on their ten-year excursion throughout countless Midwestern cow towns and backwater hamlets, where they ply their trade and, more often than not, find themselves in sometimes precarious, yet always comic, circumstances beyond their control.

A Tale Told by an Idiot by Richard Taylor Pdf

This is a story about one man's struggle to overcome class discrimination, poverty, and abandonment in order to achieve success, wholeness, and recognition. It does not always make light reading, but as with anything in life, there are humorous elements. A mixture of narrative storytelling and academic investigation provides the necessary balance for discussing a difficult subject. From earliest childhood memories, the reader is taken through the commotion of school life and ultimately beyond into the world of work. There is a gradual reversal of roles, as the ideas applied to the writer in his youth are turned outwards upon his entourage, and subsequently, the rest of society. One need not always agree; but hopefully the book will provide at the very least food for thought, and demonstrate the limitations of any idea when taken to the extreme.

From Shakespeare to Existentialism by Walter A. Kaufmann Pdf

A classic book by one of the twentieth century’s most innovative and adventurous thinkers First published in 1959, From Shakespeare to Existentialism offers Walter Kaufmann’s critical interpretations of some of the greatest minds in Western philosophy, religion, and literature. Few scholars can match Kaufmann’s range of interests, from intellectual history and comparative religion to psychology, art, and architecture. In this illuminating and wide-ranging book, he traces the evolving Aristotelian ideal of the great-souled individual, showing how it was forgotten by medieval Christendom but recovered by Shakespeare and apotheosized by Nietzsche. An invaluable companion to his Critique of Religion and Philosophy, this volume presents Kaufmann at his most trailblazing, charting new directions in Western thought while providing bold perspectives on figures such as Goethe, Hegel, Rilke, and Freud.

Reading Faulkner by Richard Marius Pdf

Reading Faulkner: Introductions to the First Thirteen Novels is a collection of lectures by Harvard University professor and nationally known novelist and biographer Richard Marius. Marius had been charged with the task of teaching an introductory course on Faulkner to undergraduates in 1996 and 1997. Combining his love of Faulkner's writing with his own experiences as an author and teacher, Marius produced a series of delightful lectures-which stand on their own as sparkling, well-rounded essays-that help beginning students in understanding the sometimes difficult work of this celebrated literary master. An expository treatment of Faulkner's major works, Reading Faulkner comprises essays that are arranged in roughly chronological order, corresponding to Faulkner's development as a writer. In a way sure to captivate the imagination of a new reader of Faulkner, Marius explicates themes in Faulkner's work, and he sheds light on the larger social history that marked Faulkner's literary production. In addition, Marius is a southerner who grew up a couple of generations after Faulkner and, like Faulkner, turned his own world into the setting for his fiction. This unique perspective, combined with Marius's thorough readings of the novels, grounded in basic Faulkner criticism, provides an engaging and accessible self-guided tour through Faulkner's career. Reading Faulkner is perfect for students from high school through the undergraduate level and will be enjoyed by general readers as well. Richard Marius (1933-1999) taught at the University of Tennessee before heading Harvard's expository writing program from 1978 to 1998. He was the author of Thomas More, Martin Luther: The Christian between God and Death, and four novels about his native East Tennessee. Nancy Grisham Anderson is an associate professor of English at Auburn University, Montgomery. She is the author of The Writer's Audience: A Reader for Composition and the editor of They Call Me Kay: A Courtship in Letters, and Wrestling with God: The Meditations of Richard Marius. She was a longtime friend of Richard Marius.
