A Treatise on Divine Contentment (Classic Reprint) by Simeon Ashe Pdf

Excerpt from A Treatise on Divine Contentment Now, lest any one should say - Yea, Paul, thou preachest that to us which thou hast scarce learned thyself: hast thou learned not to'be careful? The Apostle seems immediately to answer that, in the words of the text - J have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. Noble sentence! A speech worthy to be engraven upon our hearts and treasured up in our memory for ever. The text doth branch itself into these two general parts. The Art of Divine Contentment: In Modern English by Thomas Watson,Jason Roth Pdf

Is it possible to be content when life is painful and disappointing? The Art of Divine Contentment considers the implications of the Apostle Paul's claim that he had learned to be content in any situation (Phil 4:11). Our discontent is sinful when we murmur against God and accuse Him of injustice or cruelty. But by frequently beholding God's sovereignty, love, and grace, we can learn to be more content in all circumstances. Thomas Watson (1620-1686) was an English Puritan preacher and author. Watson originally published The Art of Divine Contentment around 1660. The source text for this edition is from an 1829 printing by L. B. Seeley and Sons in London. This book is a complete sentence-by-sentence modern update of Watson’s original text. Updates include: New descriptive chapter and section headings. Modern English sentence structure. Modern English vocabulary. Added paragraph breaks for topic transitions. English Standard Version (ESV) scripture references. Full scripture quotations and annotations in footnotes. Active table of contents.

Light from Old Paths: An Anthology of Puritan Quotations, Volume 1 by C. Matthew McMahon Pdf

This book is a masterful selection of almost 1000 quotations drawn from a wide range of Puritan works. These quotes have been chosen with great care, and arranged under topical headings from "belief" to "worship". This work forms an ideal introduction to the writings of the godly men of the 17th century, and will prove to be rich devotional reading of the highest caliber. For those being introduced to the writings of the Puritans, or those who are already familiar with them, this devotional work will be a treasure to read again and again. The reading of Puritan works has brought great benefit to the people of God across barriers of culture and time. Christians owe a great debt of gratitude to those faithful theologians, pastors and preachers who continue to speak through their writings even though they have long since entered into their heavenly rest in Christ. In these pages, the reader will find that the Puritans knew how to teach and apply God’s Word in the power of the Holy Spirit, and for the glorification of Jesus Christ, while maintaining a solid biblical orthodoxy needed in our day and age. The purpose of this book is to open a door to the vast stores of biblical treasure and wisdom to be found in the writings of the Puritans and that it will stimulate further reading from our Reformed and spiritual heritage. Authors cited include: Nathaniel Vincent, George Walker, Francis Whiddon, William Perkins, Christopher Love, Thomas Hooker, Jeremiah Burroughs, Thomas Case, Jonathan Edwards, Matthew Mead, John Owen, Richard Sibbes, Samuel Ward, Thomas Watson, Thomas Mocket, Ephraim Pagitt, Edmund Calamy, John Arrowsmith, Cuthbert Sydenham, John Beart, Richard Rawlin, Nicholas Byfield, and dozens more. Christ Inviting Sinners to Come to Him for Rest by Jeremiah Burroughs,C. Matthew McMahon Pdf

Every now and again, a work will be published by a reformer or puritan that Christians find to be of such great spiritual worth, that it is hard to put into words the incalculable and infinite good that such a work is to the Christian soul. This book, friends, is one of those works. Burroughs expounds Matthew 11:28, “Come unto me all ye that labor, and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Christ invites sinners to come to Him for rest. Sinners, in this way, can be either Christians or unbelievers. Both are beckoned to “come.” In this work Burroughs shows first, the burden of sin, the burden of the Law, the burden of legal performances with the misery of those that are under them, the burden of corruption, and the burden of outward affliction. Secondly, he shows that Christ graciously offers to them that come to him, rest from all those burdens. In this he demonstrates what it is to come to Christ; that Christ requires nothing but to come to him. Several Rules to be observed in right coming to Christ, the means to draw souls to Christ, that in coming to Christ God would have us have respect toward ourselves, that there is no rest for souls out of Christ, and the reasons for this, with some conclusions from it. Thirdly, Burroughs shows the rest believers have from sin, that the deliverance from the Law by Christ is, privatively, and positively. He will show the rest believers have from the burden of the Law by coming to Christ, how Christ gives rest from the burden of legal performances, how Christ gives rest from the burden of corruption; in which is shown how sanctification and holiness comes only from Christ. And Burroughs demonstrates encouragements to come to Christ for holiness. He will explain how Christ gives rest from outward afflictions, and then considers some directions on how to get rest from Christ in spiritual desertions. God’s people have been personally helped by Burroughs throughout the centuries by all his works, and in this volume on coming to Christ, he again shows the inestimable spiritual value of his preaching and writing. This is a life-transforming work which will enable Christians to inwardly examine themselves as they consider how the Law of God correlates to their abiding in the Lord Jesus, and what steps they must take to come to Christ in a saving and sanctifying manner. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Practical Observations on the Book of Ruth by C. Matthew McMahon Pdf

The Book of Ruth, often perceived as a heartwarming love story, is much deeper than its brief 85 verses may suggest. Far from just a narrative of an impoverished outcast finding love through the guidance of her mother-in-law, it holds a weighty place in the biblical canon, universally acknowledged, and inspired by the Holy Spirit, for the enrichment of the Church. But could there be more to it? The true brilliance of Ruth lies in its core message. It masterfully illustrates the concept of redemption and how it unfolds through the Kinsman Redeemer. The historical context, with Ruth's pivotal role as a Moabite convert to true faith, further accentuates its significance. Her union with Boaz, a revered figure among his kin, led to the birth of Obed, the grandfather of King David. The narrative was crafted to affirm David's legitimate claim to the throne, emphasizing his divine lineage. Yet, the true essence of the book transcends earthly monarchies, pointing towards King Jesus, the Messiah, our Spiritual David, who emerges as the savior and the ultimate Kinsman. In "Practical Observations on the Book of Ruth", McMahon explores this biblical masterpiece, offering insightful verse-by-verse observations. He presents it as a reflection of Christ's Covenant of Grace, providing a comprehensive commentary on its relevance to the Christian faith and its practical implications for believers in their everyday lives.

God's Arrow Against Atheists by Henry Smith Pdf

In this book Smith argues that Christianity is the only true religion. This particular book was one of Smith’s most popular works, and went through dozens of editions and reprints during his lifetime (his sermons in general had gone through eighty–five editions by 1620). "God’s Arrow" focuses on utterly destroying paganism (the atheism of the natural man), Islam (the religion of carnality) and Roman Catholicism (the religion of the deceived, apostate and Antichristian establishment posing as God’s authority in the world), with an exhortation to unite Christ’s church in the truth rather than divide it. Smith’s arguments are lucid and biblically powerful, and a sanctifying treat to the Christian’s mind and soul. He quickly demonstrates the absurdity of that which is “not the true religion” of Jesus Christ and concretely sets down the right religion contained in Holy Scripture. This is a classic work that should not be missed! This is not a scan or facsimile, and contains an active table of contents for electronic versions.
