A Visit to Europe and the Holy Land (Classic Reprint) by Hiram Francis Fairbanks Pdf

Excerpt from A Visit to Europe and the Holy Land In the following pages I have endeavored to describe what I saw, and the impressions received, during a visit to some of the most interesting countries of the Old World, from the point of view of an honest and unprejudiced American. The time that I was abroad might be considered by some as insufficient to obtain an intelligent understanding of the matters about which I write. My answer to this is, that I have not attempted the impossible, and I am well aware that few men are able to write a thoroughly philosophical treatise on the historical, political, and social life of even their own native land. I am also cognizant of the fact that many foreigners, after a brief sojourn in other countries, attempt to discuss them intelligently, a work which they oftentimes would not be able to accomplish if they had lived in them their whole lives. The Holy Land (Classic Reprint) by John Kelman Pdf

Excerpt from The Holy Land The secrets of satisfactory travel are mainly two - to have certain questions ready to ask; and to detach oneself from preconceptions, so as to find not what one expects, or desires to find, but what is there. These rules I endeavoured to follow while in the Holy Land. As to this book, I have tried to write it "with my eye on the object" - to describe things as they were seen, and to see them again while describing them. The extent to which this ideal has been reached, or missed, will be the measure of the book's success or failure. No attempt has been made to add anything original to the scientific knowledge of Palestine. For that task I am not qualified either by sufficient travel or by expert study of the subject. On the other hand, this is not merely an itinerary, or journal of experiences and adventures of the road. Notes of a Pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land (Classic Reprint) by F. R. Oliphant Pdf

Excerpt from Notes of a Pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land In these prosaic days there is no very great degree of hardship involved in the notion of a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, at least for a pilgrim who does not think it necessary to gratuitously increase the hardships of the journey, and who is able, more or less, to pay his way. Tent Life in the Holy Land (Classic Reprint) by William Cowper Prime Pdf

Excerpt from Tent Life in the Holy Land The publication of boat life IN egypt and nuria, a volume containing the incidents of my journeying for some months before I reached the Holy Land, renders unnecessary what might, in ordinary cases, be proper by way of preface to a book like this. I visited the sacred soil, as a pilgrim, seeking mine own pleasure. I went where it pleased me. I acted as it pleased me, yielding, with delicious license, to the whim of every passing hour. I prayed or I laughed I knelt or I turned my back; I wept or I sang; and when I sang it was now a song of sinful humanity and now a grand old monkish hymn, to which my voice made the moonlit streets of Jerusalem ring as I strolled along them, or which I sent floating over the holy waves of Galilee. I have written my book even as I traveled. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Letters From the Holy Land (Classic Reprint) by Elizabeth Butler Pdf

Excerpt from Letters From the Holy Land These letters, written to my mother, and published chiefly at her request, can lay no claim to literary worth; their only possible value lies in their being descriptive of impressions received on the spot of that Land which stands alone in its character upon the map of the world. But the reader will more easily excuse the shortcomings of my pen than, I hope, he will ever do those of my pencil! I will make no apologies for the sketches, save to remind the reader that most of them had to be done in haste. They are necessarily considerably reduced in size in the reproduction, so as to suit them to the book form. It was a happy circumstance for me that my husband's appointment to the Command at Alexandria should have enabled us to realize this journey. Traveling in the Holy Land Through the Stereoscope (Classic Reprint) by Jesse Lyman Hurlbut Pdf

Excerpt from Traveling in the Holy Land Through the Stereoscope It is the recognition of these two great facts that has determined the nature of this book. If stereographs are life-size spaces of three dimensions to the eyes, they Should be recognized as such and used as such. And if they may be to a greater or less degree, according as we use them, the realities to us, then they should be treated so as to make them realities as far as possible. And it seems the more we treat them as places, as Palestine itself, the more they become the same to us. Accordingly in the following pages are given such maps and information as will make this small volume serve the purpose of a guide-book, and at the same time, as I said at the beginning, I have tried to serve in it as a personal guide, saying everything in such a way as to constantly help and lead us to make this tour, to visit these stereographed scenes, as a tourist visits the actual scenes in Palestine. It will be found that on this stereoscopic tour one is carried to all the more important places in Palestine, and in the same order that a tourist might visit them; and in the more important sections the stereographed scenes are so connected that you may move from one position to another in such a way as to really make it a continuous journey. I urge upon all who have not actually visited Palestine, to give the closest attention to the maps and the descriptions, with the purpose of always keeping their bearings as they move from one place to another. Finally, we have Space for only a word on the impor tance of the land of Palestine, why we need to know it intimately, why we should stand in the very presence of its hills and valleys. Out-of-Doors in the Holy Land by Henry van Dyke Pdf

Excerpt from Out-of-Doors in the Holy Land: Impressions of Travel in Body and Spirit For a long time, in the hopefulness and confidence of youth, I dreamed of going to Palestine. But that dream was denied, for want of money and leisure. Then, for a long time, in the hardening strain of early manhood, I was afraid to go to Palestine, lest the journey should prove a disenchantment, and some of my religious beliefs be rudely shaken, per haps destroyed. But that fear was removed by a little voyage to the gates of death, where it was made clear to me that no belief is worth keeping unless it can bear the touch of reality. In that year of pain and sorrow, through a full surrender to the Divine Will, the hopefulness and confidence of youth came back to me. Since then it has been possible once more to wake in the morning with the feeling that the day might bring something new and wonderful and welcome, and to travel into the future with a whole and happy heart. Travels in Egypt and the Holy Land (Classic Reprint) by William Rae Wilson Pdf

Excerpt from Travels in Egypt and the Holy Land Although it is not under an expectation I shall be able to add any thing of importance to the information contained in the works of those travellers who have visited this most interesting region, that I sit down to arrange into a narrative the notes and memoranda of a long journey; yet, it is in the humble hope of contributing something, which may dispose Sceptics and Unbelievers to feel surprised that things of such great antiquity as those customs described in this sacred fountain of truth should have been protected, or kept alive, from those changes incident to the lapse of time and vicissitudes of human affairs, as if these had been preserved in their entire original state, to confirm to all ages, the authenticity of that record which they are so wonderfully calculated to illustrate. Journal of a Tour in the Holy Land by Lady Francis Egerton Pdf

Excerpt from Journal of a Tour in the Holy Land: In May and June, 1840 I have been requested by the Committee of the Ladies' Hibernian Female School Society, to allow the following extracts from my private Journal, (made originally, merely for the perusal of my friends, ) to be printed with a view to the benefit of the above Institution. It was necessarily most agreeable to me to be able in any way to further the objects of that useful Society, and I was happy to accede to the request. I trust that the curiosity of my friends, as to what may have been my impressions during a journey through Palestine, and the interest which almost all persons entertain upon the subject of that country, may cause the undertaking to answer the purpose for which it is intended; and if, in addition to this object, these extracts chance to prove useful as a guide book to any future traveller in the East, my satisfaction will be much increased. In furtherance of the latter object, I have subjoined, in the Appendix, an index of our resting places, and the number of hours' journey between each.
