Traveling in the Holy Land Through the Stereoscope (Classic Reprint) by Jesse Lyman Hurlbut Pdf

Excerpt from Traveling in the Holy Land Through the Stereoscope It is the recognition of these two great facts that has determined the nature of this book. If stereographs are life-size spaces of three dimensions to the eyes, they Should be recognized as such and used as such. And if they may be to a greater or less degree, according as we use them, the realities to us, then they should be treated so as to make them realities as far as possible. And it seems the more we treat them as places, as Palestine itself, the more they become the same to us. Accordingly in the following pages are given such maps and information as will make this small volume serve the purpose of a guide-book, and at the same time, as I said at the beginning, I have tried to serve in it as a personal guide, saying everything in such a way as to constantly help and lead us to make this tour, to visit these stereographed scenes, as a tourist visits the actual scenes in Palestine. It will be found that on this stereoscopic tour one is carried to all the more important places in Palestine, and in the same order that a tourist might visit them; and in the more important sections the stereographed scenes are so connected that you may move from one position to another in such a way as to really make it a continuous journey. I urge upon all who have not actually visited Palestine, to give the closest attention to the maps and the descriptions, with the purpose of always keeping their bearings as they move from one place to another. Finally, we have Space for only a word on the impor tance of the land of Palestine, why we need to know it intimately, why we should stand in the very presence of its hills and valleys. Out-of-Doors in the Holy Land by Henry van Dyke Pdf

Excerpt from Out-of-Doors in the Holy Land: Impressions of Travel in Body and Spirit For a long time, in the hopefulness and confidence of youth, I dreamed of going to Palestine. But that dream was denied, for want of money and leisure. Then, for a long time, in the hardening strain of early manhood, I was afraid to go to Palestine, lest the journey should prove a disenchantment, and some of my religious beliefs be rudely shaken, per haps destroyed. But that fear was removed by a little voyage to the gates of death, where it was made clear to me that no belief is worth keeping unless it can bear the touch of reality. In that year of pain and sorrow, through a full surrender to the Divine Will, the hopefulness and confidence of youth came back to me. Since then it has been possible once more to wake in the morning with the feeling that the day might bring something new and wonderful and welcome, and to travel into the future with a whole and happy heart. Imagining the Holy Land by Burke O. Long Pdf

At the Chautauqua Institution in New York, visitors could walk down Palestine Avenue to "Palestine" and a model of Jerusalem, or along Morris Avenue to a scale model of the "Jewish Tabernacle." At the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904, a replica of Ottoman Jerusalem covered eleven acres, while today, 300 miles to the southeast, a seven-story-high Christ of the Ozarks stands above a modern re-creation of the Holy Land set in the Arkansas hills."--BOOK JACKET.

Tent and Saddle Life in the Holy Land (Classic Reprint) by David Van Horne Pdf

Excerpt from Tent and Saddle Life in the Holy Land Our chief interest in the Holy Land arises from its association with the Bible. The country once trodden by the patriarchs, judges, kings and prophets, and by the Saviour himself and the apostles, cannot fail to attract the attention of travellers and readers in each generation. Be sides this the face of the country is diversified, and the scenery of more than passing interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Journal of a Tour in the Holy Land by Lady Francis Egerton Pdf

Excerpt from Journal of a Tour in the Holy Land: In May and June, 1840 I have been requested by the Committee of the Ladies' Hibernian Female School Society, to allow the following extracts from my private Journal, (made originally, merely for the perusal of my friends, ) to be printed with a view to the benefit of the above Institution. It was necessarily most agreeable to me to be able in any way to further the objects of that useful Society, and I was happy to accede to the request. I trust that the curiosity of my friends, as to what may have been my impressions during a journey through Palestine, and the interest which almost all persons entertain upon the subject of that country, may cause the undertaking to answer the purpose for which it is intended; and if, in addition to this object, these extracts chance to prove useful as a guide book to any future traveller in the East, my satisfaction will be much increased. In furtherance of the latter object, I have subjoined, in the Appendix, an index of our resting places, and the number of hours' journey between each. Out-Of-Doors in the Holy Land Impressions of Travel in Body and Spirit by Henry Van Dyke Pdf

Out-of-Doors in the Holy Land Impressions of Travel in Body and Spirit by Henry Van Dyke PREFACE For a long time, in the hopefulness and confidence of youth, I dreamed of going to Palestine. But that dream was denied, for want of money and leisure. Then, for a long time, in the hardening strain of early manhood, I was afraid to go to Palestine, lest the journey should prove a disenchantment, and some of my religious beliefs be rudely shaken, perhaps destroyed. But that fear was removed by a little voyage to the gates of death, where it was made clear to me that no belief is worth keeping unless it can bear the touch of reality. Since then it has been possible once more to wake in the morning with the feeling that the day might bring something new and wonderful and welcome, and to travel into the future with a whole and happy heart. This is what I call growing younger; though the years increase, yet the burden of them is lessened, and the fear that life will some day lead into an empty prison-house has been cast out by the incoming of the Perfect Love. Inventing the Holy Land by Stephanie Stidham Rogers Pdf

This book examines the relationship between American Protestants and Palestine from 1842-1917. The eastward views of Palestine drew the ancient biblical past into the present for Protestants, thus bringing a sharper focus to a new frontier and inventing the idea of a Christian Holy Land.
