A Voyage to Abadan by Bill Jopes Pdf

This is a story of the sea training and service during World War II of two Cadet Midshipmen of the United States Merchant Marine Corps. Only about six thousand cadets were trained during the war, a situation which left these men largely unknown and unidentifiable when on leave. The uniform was much the same as a navy midshipmans uniform and was marked with a USNR emblem. The cadet was, in fact, a midshipman in the U.S. Navy Reserve. The purpose of the corps was to supply officers for the merchant ships being built at a rapid rate for the war effort. There was a danger of there being more ships than there were crews to sail them. The accelerated curriculum undergone by these men was designed for three months basic training, six months sea duty and six months at the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. Upon graduation, a third mate or third engineers license was issued. Near the end of the war the final training at the academy was extended to one year. After the war, this became a full-time four-year program similar to that at Annapolis. This is a story typical of that of any U.S. merchant ship during wartime. It explores the problems caused by untrained crews, disregarded safety rules, boredom, danger, and storms. However, the men of the Yamhill lead something of a renegade life not usually experienced in running in convoy across the Atlantic. The fact that this voyage lasted nearly a year, traveling halfway around the world alone, operating in all the war zones, visiting seventeen foreign ports, and undergoing several thrilling adventures gives this story perhaps a little extra vitality. For example, there is a day-long battle with a Japanese submarine. The spectacle of a slow, plodding merchant tanker out-dueling a Japanese man o war in a one-on-one engagement puts it high in the chronicles of merchant marine battles with the enemy. For present-day sailors who may wonder about life at sea on board a merchant ship during World War II, this book gives a look into the past and an acquaintance with the wartime merchant marine. For those who were there, it will bring back the memories that may be fast fading away.

Winward Fearon on Collateral Warranties by David L. Cornes,Richard Winward Pdf

Since this book was first published over ten years ago, collateral warranties have been used increasingly by funding institutions, building purchasers and tenants to create a contractual relationship between themselves and other parties involved in the project, whether architect, engineer, contractor or subcontractor. Indeed, collateral warranties are now being used to create primary contractual obligations. There have been some immensely important developments in the law relating to collateral warranties since the first edition. The Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999 has introduced radical new developments into English contract law. The book now includes a completely new chapter on the legislation, which also looks at the potential practical uses of the Act on development projects. The House of Lords has handed down a number of key decisions recently on third party remedies and on the principles relating to damages on assignment (such as Linden Gardens, Panatown, Henderson v. Merrett Syndicates and White v. Jones). These and some 65 other new cases are considered in the new edition. Finally, a number of standard forms of warranty have been issued and these are now discussed, in particular the new JCT standard form of warranty for main contractors and subcontractors. This immensely important book was widely welcomed when it was first published. The new edition has been thoroughly updated and will continue to be the authoritative reference on the subject. "David Cornes and Richard Winward's book is a veritable mine of such information and is eminently readable" Construction News 16/05/02 "For those of you working in construction, managing building or indeed other contracts, you must have at least one authoritative source of advice and information. If this is your area of work, then this is your book" Building Engineer, July 2002

Ready For Anything by Geoff puddefoot Pdf

Set up in August 1905, the Royal Fleet Auxiliary – unofficial motto: Ready for Anything – was originally a logistic support organisation, Admiralty-owned but run on civilian lines, comprising a miscellaneous and very unglamorous collection of colliers, store ships and harbour craft. This book charts its rise in fleet strength, capability and importance, through two world wars and a technical revolution, until the time when naval operations became simply impossible without it. Its earliest tasks were mainly freighting – supplying the Royal Navy’s worldwide network of bases – but in wartime fleets were required to spend much longer at sea and the RFA had to develop techniques of underway replenishment. This did not come to full fruition until the British Pacific Fleet operated alongside the Americans in 1944-45, but by then the RFA had already pioneered many of the procedures involved. This book combines a history of the service, including many little-known wartime operations, with data on the ships, and a portrait of life in the service gleaned from personal accounts and recollections. Half way between a civilian and a military service, the RFA has never received the attention it deserves, but this book throws a long-overdue spotlight on its achievements.
