A Zionist Primer (Classic Reprint) by Sundel Doniger Pdf

Excerpt from A Zionist Primer This volume published by Young Judaea attempts to make clear to the Jewish. Youth the Jewish problem and the solution as formulated in the Zionist program. Young Judaea is an organization of young men and young women who are awakened to the needs of our people and who desire to equip themselves for effective service in the training of our youth. We feel the menace of a generation growing up in ignorance of its history, traditions and national ideals. Education in the schools of America can teach the new generation only the beau ties of other cultures, and the heroisms of other nations. The Bible has become a sealed book, or one to be read in the light of an interpretation dominated by alien thought; and the heroic figures of our own history, our national revival and the Hebrew renaissance are almost entirely unknown. Young Judaea is an organization of young men and young women who are awakened to the needs of our people and who desire to equip themselves for effective service in the training of our youth. We feel the menace of a generation growing up in ignorance of its history, traditions and national ideals. Education in the schools of America can teach the new generation only the beauties of other cultures, and the heroisms of other nations. The Bible has become a sealed book, or one to be read in the light of an interpretation dominated by alien thought; and the heroic figures of our own history, our national revival and the Hebrew renaissance are almost entirely unknown. The new generation is largely unconscious of the vital and creative forces that have their roots in the East, and of which the Jewish nation is the guardian; of the national heroism that has endured throughout the ages; of the lofty vision of a commonwealth to be rebuilt in Palestine and based on justice and righteousness, a vision cherished with unfaltering courage for thousands of years and which has given continuity and significance to Jewish history. Palestine is the motif that runs through all the drama of our history. It is the subject of the dreams of our prophets, our sages and our poets. This book is the account of an attempt to realize the dreams of the centuries. We feel that this volume must appeal to the love of heroism in the Jewish youth, to his sense of dignity and to his highest aspirations for freedom and self-realization. We hope the response will be such as to encourage us in our efforts to bring back and hold our Jewish youth to the path of his fathers. Zionist Studies (Classic Reprint) by Albert M. Friedenberg Pdf

Excerpt from Zionist Studies The following papers, as a totality, are studies in Zionist theory. They are reprinted in substantially their original form, with the correction of verbal errors of course, simply because a living movement cannot be reduced to a set of hard and fast rules which revision would entail. These papers, moreover, were produced at various seasons, are united in their purpose and invariably represent the result of care ful study and serious reflection. It is believed that the studies herewith presented to a critical public bear one and the same message Zionism is primarily a movement which makes for the amelioration of the conditions under which Jews live in countries of persecution. In reality this is the theory of Zionism, if there can be theory in any movement that h'a'sa practical Object. Zionist Work in Palestine (Classic Reprint) by Israel Cohen Pdf

Excerpt from Zionist Work in Palestine The articles contained in this volume have been selected from the special Palestine number of Die Welt, the central official organ of the Zionist Organization, which was issued last autumn. The flattering reception which that German publication received, not merely from Zionists but even from pronounced opponents of the Jewish nationalist movement, encouraged the hope that an English issue - even if on a slightly reduced scale - would meet with an equally cordial welcome. The necessity of such an issue must be patent to every body in English-speaking countries who is interested in Zionism, and who knows how comparatively scanty the literature upon that subject is in English. The contri butors to the Palestine number of Die Welt, which has been reprinted as an independent miscellany, are all authorities on the particular subject with which they deal, and the publication forms the first attempt to pre sent in a comprehensive and authoritative form an account of the work already accomplished by Zionist efforts in Palestine and a forecast of the work to be accomplished. The Zionist Movement by Israel Cohen Pdf

Excerpt from The Zionist Movement: Its Aims and Achievements Although there is now quite a voluminous literature upon the Zionist movement, there is no need to apologise for a further contribution on the subject. Parliamentary debates and newspaper articles in various countries show that the aims and aspirations of the movement are still misunderstood and misrepresented, and this lack of appreciation is prevalent even in Jewish circles. The present pamphlet is issued, therefore, in the hope of disseminating a better knowledge of the Jewish national ideal, and of securing wider sympathy and support in its favour. It has also been prompted by the necessity of providing a concise history in popular form of the Zionist movement from its early beginnings to the present day. Young as Zionism is, it has already passed through a considerable development both from a practical and theoretical point of view, and the official pamphlet, "Ten Years of Zionism," issued in 1907, is now out of date. The present publication reviews the work accomplished until the close of the Tenth Zionist Congress, and takes note of a pregnant phenomenon - the Turkish Revolution - which had been undreamt of five years ago. It is the record of a great national movement whose progress is determined both by internal and external forces, and whose subsequent evolution must be followed with attention by all who have any interest in the travails of the Jewish people. The Case a the Anti-Zionists by Leon Simon Pdf

Excerpt from The Case a the Anti-Zionists: A Reply For Zionists it is an axiom that what Judaism needs most of all at the present time is a new movement of concentration. Throughout Jewish history it is concentration and not diffusion that has preserved the Jewish spirit and the Jewish way of life. What has rendered possible the survival of the Jewish people and of Judaism since the Jewish State was overthrown is the fact that in every period there has been somewhere a strong centre of Jewish life and learning, which has served as a reservoir whence all the scattered sections of Jewry could draw vitality. In Babylon, in Spain, in Germany, and most recently in Poland. Such centres have existed. To-day, as a result of various causes which it would take too long to detail here, Jewry is or is coming to be without a centre, and is falling to pieces in consequence; and this disruption of Jewry is inevitably accompanied by a weakening and disintegration of Judaism. Considered in this aspect, the movement for a return to Palestine is the natural reply to this threat to Jewry and Judaism. It means reintegration instead of disintegration; it means the creation of a new unifying force in Jewish life - and a force which will be not only unifying, but also creative, since Palestine has this advantage over all the temporary centres of the exile, that it has an abiding place in the consciousness of the Jew, and is bound up with all that is fundamentally Jewish. My Promised Land by Ari Shavit Pdf

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW AND THE ECONOMIST Winner of the Natan Book Award, the National Jewish Book Award, and the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award An authoritative and deeply personal narrative history of the State of Israel, by one of the most influential journalists writing about the Middle East today Not since Thomas L. Friedman’s groundbreaking From Beirut to Jerusalem has a book captured the essence and the beating heart of the Middle East as keenly and dynamically as My Promised Land. Facing unprecedented internal and external pressures, Israel today is at a moment of existential crisis. Ari Shavit draws on interviews, historical documents, private diaries, and letters, as well as his own family’s story, illuminating the pivotal moments of the Zionist century to tell a riveting narrative that is larger than the sum of its parts: both personal and national, both deeply human and of profound historical dimension. We meet Shavit’s great-grandfather, a British Zionist who in 1897 visited the Holy Land on a Thomas Cook tour and understood that it was the way of the future for his people; the idealist young farmer who bought land from his Arab neighbor in the 1920s to grow the Jaffa oranges that would create Palestine’s booming economy; the visionary youth group leader who, in the 1940s, transformed Masada from the neglected ruins of an extremist sect into a powerful symbol for Zionism; the Palestinian who as a young man in 1948 was driven with his family from his home during the expulsion from Lydda; the immigrant orphans of Europe’s Holocaust, who took on menial work and focused on raising their children to become the leaders of the new state; the pragmatic engineer who was instrumental in developing Israel’s nuclear program in the 1960s, in the only interview he ever gave; the zealous religious Zionists who started the settler movement in the 1970s; the dot-com entrepreneurs and young men and women behind Tel-Aviv’s booming club scene; and today’s architects of Israel’s foreign policy with Iran, whose nuclear threat looms ominously over the tiny country. As it examines the complexities and contradictions of the Israeli condition, My Promised Land asks difficult but important questions: Why did Israel come to be? How did it come to be? Can Israel survive? Culminating with an analysis of the issues and threats that Israel is currently facing, My Promised Land uses the defining events of the past to shed new light on the present. The result is a landmark portrait of a small, vibrant country living on the edge, whose identity and presence play a crucial role in today’s global political landscape. Praise for My Promised Land “This book will sweep you up in its narrative force and not let go of you until it is done. [Shavit’s] accomplishment is so unlikely, so total . . . that it makes you believe anything is possible, even, God help us, peace in the Middle East.”—Simon Schama, Financial Times “[A] must-read book.”—Thomas L. Friedman, The New York Times “Important and powerful . . . the least tendentious book about Israel I have ever read.”—Leon Wieseltier, The New York Times Book Review “Spellbinding . . . Shavit’s prophetic voice carries lessons that all sides need to hear.”—The Economist “One of the most nuanced and challenging books written on Israel in years.”—The Wall Street Journal
