An exploration of how Muslims in the United States have interpreted the Qur'an in ways that make it speak to their American realities In Speaking Qur'an: An American Scripture, Timur R. Yuskaev examines how Muslim Americans have been participating in their country's cultural, social, religious, and political life. Essential to this process, he shows, is how the Qur'an has become an evermore deeply American text that speaks to central issues in the lives of American Muslims through the spoken-word interpretations of Muslim preachers, scholars,and activists. Yuskaev illustrates this process with four major case studies that highlight dialogues between American Muslim public intellectuals and their audiences. First, through an examination of the work of Fazlur Rahman, he addresses the question of how the premodern Qur'an is translated across time into modern, American settings. Practical experience has shown that, in most classrooms, students are typically asked to produce texts for one single audience, namely the teacher or the lecturer, who already knows what constitutes an acceptable response. However, in many classrooms, teachers and lecturers tend to believe that literacy can be defined as the ability to encode and decode texts, the ability to decipher the ‘main idea’ of a reading passage or to write a text that obeys the general conventions of language usage such as syntax, organisation, and idea development. The central argument of this book, however, is that, at higher levels of the educational system in Angola, academic and research literacy practices are, at best, questionable and, at worst, harmful. An extensive re-evaluation of assumptions regarding student capability and what it means to be a literate in the twenty-first-century ‘information society’ is of critical importance. Such a re-examination allows for extensive reflection on current practices and a powerful critique of ‘traditional’ academic and research literacy methods, and suggests ways in which practices of quality teaching and learning may be implemented.

Reserve Memories examines how myths and narratives about the past have enabled a Northern Athabaskan community to understand and confront challenges and opportunities in the present. For over five centuries the Chilcotin people have lived in relative isolation in the rich timberlands and scattered meadows of the inland Northwest, in what is today known as west central British Columbia. Although linguistic and cultural changes are escalating, they remain one of the more traditional and little known Native communities in northwestern North America. Combining years of fieldwork with an acute theoretical perspective, David W. Dinwoodie sheds light on the special power of the past for the Chilcotin people of the Nemiah Valley Indian Reserve. In different social and political settings, they draw upon a "reserve" of memories-in particular, myths and historical narratives-and reactivate them in order to help make sense of and deal effectively with the possibilities and problems of the modern world.
