Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals Punctually by Graeme Baber Pdf

This book defines ‘sustainable development’, setting out the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from their inception in January 2011 to their operationalization in September 2015. It maps the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and their targets to the SDGs and their respective targets. Nine SDGs are classified on the basis of the mapping exercise as proceeding from the MDGs, and eight as new Goals. One of the nine SDGs (SDG 1) is the subject of a ‘Continuation Microstudy’, the structure for which is also used for the ‘Continuation Macrostudy’ that assesses the others from this group for punctual achievement. One of the eight new Goals (SDG 10) is the subject of a ‘New Ground Microstudy’, the structure for which is condensed into a ‘New Ground Macrostudy’ that evaluates the other new Goals for punctual accomplishment. The book will be useful to students of development finance and economics, policy-makers in the area of sustainable development, and members of the public who are interested in the world around us and in sustainable development, in particular.

Fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals by Narinder Kakar,Vesselin Popovski,Nicholas A. Robinson Pdf

"This book presents a knowledge hub for successful implementation ideas in relation to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Through expert review of successful case studies, readers can draw lessons from the actions that work to positively address target goals. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development identifies 17 Sustainable Development Goals ("SDGs") and 169 targets designed to catalyze action in critical areas of importance to humanity and the planet. The effort to implement the SDGs, however, demands a sense of urgency in the face of environmental degradation (including climate change), emerging conflicts and growing inequality. Now in the fifth year since the launch of the 2030 Agenda, this book takes stock of how far the world has come and how we can position ourselves to achieve the global targets. This publication provides a fresh look at implementation through the review and examination of various case studies from across the world; highlighting impactful and creative actions that go beyond the business as usual development efforts. The volume reinforces this analysis with expert recommendations on how to support implementation efforts and achieve the SDGs through both international and national strategies and the involvement of both the public and private sectors. The result is an indispensable textual tool for policy makers, academia, IGOs and NGOs, as well as the public, as we march towards the 2030 deadline"--

From Summits to Solutions by Hiroshi Kato,Raj M. Desai,Homi Kharas Pdf

A positive agenda for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 All 193 member nations of the United Nations agreed in September 2015 to adopt a set of seventeen "Sustainable Development Goals," to be achieved by 2030. Each of the goals—in such areas as education and health care —is laudable in and of itself, and governments and organizations are working hard on them. But so far there is no overall, positive agenda of what new things need to be done to ensure the goals are achieved across all nations. In a search of fresh approaches to the longstanding problems targeted by the Sustainable Development Goals, the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Global Economy and Development program at Brookings mounted a collaborative research effort to advance implementation of Agenda 2030. This edited volume is the product of that effort. The book approaches the UN's goals through three broad lenses. The first considers new approaches to capturing value. Examples include Nigeria's first green bonds, practical methods to expand women's economic opportunities, benchmarking to reflect business contributions to achieving the goals, new incentives for investment in infrastructure, and educational systems that promote cross-sector problem solving. The second lens entails new approaches to targeting places, including oceans, rural areas, fast-growing developing cities, and the interlocking challenge of data systems, including geospatial information generated by satellites. The third lens focuses on updating governance, broadly defined. Issues include how civil society can align with the SDG challenge; how an advanced economy like Canada can approach the goals at home and abroad; what needs to be done to foster new approaches for managing the global commons; and how can multilateral institutions for health and development finance evolve.

An Ibero-American Perspective on Narratives of Pandemics by Zélia M. Bora,Animesh Roy,Ricardo de la Fuente Ballesteros Pdf

An Ibero-American Perspective on Narratives of Pandemics is a critique of the realities of the pandemic in the Ibero-American world and its intertwined relationship with the environment. Through a critical gaze into the history of the region as it has evolved through periods of socio-environmental and cultural conflicts, the book chronicles multiple experiences of how people managed to negotiate multiple crises on a daily basis by often clinging to their age old cultural and healing practices, as well as the humanistic representation of such experiences in various fictional and nonfictional writings. The contributors expose the biopolitics around COVID-19 and its effects particularly on marginalised populations and the environment in an effort to consider the complexity of the pandemic in its multiple dimensions. They evaluate it through climatic, socioeconomic, political, scientific, and cultural lenses that they argue shaped the realities of the pandemic. They also take a close look at the use and effects of language in virtual spaces, implying it has the ability to construct/mis-construct reality in this postmodern world, arguing there is a need for a new environmental ethic post-pandemic.
