Actual Life in the Turkish Harem (Classic Reprint) by Vahan Cardashian Pdf

Excerpt from Actual Life in the Turkish Harem This is the story of the woman of locks and bars - harem. Stripped Of its trammels and tassels Of sentimental and mawkish fairy tales and dramatic Arabian Night stories, the Harem is plainly one Of the fundamental prin ciples Of Mohammedanism, which permits a man to marry as many as four women at a time, under certain restrictive conditions; to keep them indoors, behind locks and bars, or under veil and shawl when out of doors, away from the gaze Of men other than their hus bands or immediate members Of the family, and to divorce them, according to the Koranic laws, until a man shall have married as many as seven women all told. He may also have other women in his household or elsewhere, without marrying them, provided that he has fulfilled his Obligations to those whom he has married. An Englishwoman in a Turkish Harem (Classic Reprint) by Grace Ellison Pdf

Excerpt from An Englishwoman in a Turkish Harem Hese letters do not claim to be a psycho logical study of Turkish character, nor are they a political or historical treatise. They are only an Englishwoman's impressions of Turkish harem life, written during a very happy and in teresting visit amongst Turkish friends. Should I not have said in these letters what my Turkish sisters expected me to say; should I not have understood their civilization as they hoped I would understand it; I feel sure they will forgive one who they know has always been, and will always be their sincere friend. To correct. The errors, prejudice, and hatred which have become almost part of the British national attitude towards Turkey is not an easy task. If these letters have been able in ever so small a way to spread some of the enthusiasm and love I feel for a nation which Europe has so severely censured, they will at least have justified the reason of their existence. My thanks are due to the editor of the Daily T elegmp/z for allowing me to reproduce those letters which have appeared in the columns of. Haremlik by Demetra Vaka Pdf

Excerpt from Haremlik: Some Pages From the Life of Turkish Women The mist was slowly lifting so slowly that one could imagine an invisible hand to be reluctantly drawing aside veils from the face of nature. As the air became clearer, the slender minarets were seen first above the other buildings; and then, little by little, Constantinople, Queen of Cities, revealed herself to our hungry eyes. And as if Nature were but Constantinople's handmaiden, the last of the fog was suddenly transmuted to glorious sunshine, that we might the more surely be surprised and dazzled with the beauty of the Sultan's capital. An American Among the Orientals by James E. P. Boulden Pdf

Excerpt from An American Among the Orientals: Including an Audience With the Sultan, and a Visit to the Interior of a Turkish Harem The novel characteristics of the Turks; their singu lar Observances and beliefs; and the attitude in which they now stand before the world, owing to the com plicated condition of the russo-greek question, invol ving, as it has, in a bloody struggle, not only Turkey and Russia, but the great Western powers of Europe, render authentic accounts of their manners and cus toms peculiarly interesting. A simple, unadorned, but truthful narration of what came under the author's observation during a few months' sojourn at Constanti nople, is all that he has aimed at in the unpretending volume now modestly submitted to the public. The Harem by Norman Mosley Penzer Pdf

For nearly four centuries, the Ottoman sultans dwelt amid the secret splendors of Topkapi Palace. Access to the Grand Seraglio--which served as the empire's administrative, legislative, and judicial center and an academy of fine arts, as well as the ruler's home--was jealously guarded, even after the sultans ceased to reside there in the mid-nineteenth century. In 1936, a distinguished scholar of Orientalism, Norman Mosley Penzer (1892-1960), was afforded a rare opportunity to step inside the Grand Seraglio; in this eagerly embraced and much-consulted volume, he reveals what he found. Constructed between 1459 and 1465 at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Topkapi Palace stands in present-day Istanbul, near the confluence of the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn, and the Marmara Sea. Penzer surveyed the entire palace from end to end during numerous visits over the course of two years, and he presents photographs and floor plans that provide a comprehensive view of Topkapi's structure. Penzer's illustrations of the opulent gardens, chambers, and pavilions come to imaginative life with his explorations of day-to-day palace life--particularly among the women of the harem and their eunuch guards. His evocative accounts of the manners, dress, and politics of Turkish court life continue to influence the scholarly work of the twenty-first century, and this classic history remains indispensable to studies of harem life.

Secrets of the Harem by Carla Coco Pdf

"This all-color book describes the Turkish harem in a comprehensive manner, bringing it to life with sensual, evocative illustrations and well-documented text." "The author describes the reigns and idiosyncracies of the Sultans and their favorites and brilliantly traces the decline of a once mighty empire grown soft from the corruption of absolute power, the influence of Europe, and above all, the usurpation of control by the very women who were supposed to live in complete subjugation to their lords and masters." "Illustrated by documents of the period, old and new photographs, and masterpieces by Renoir, Delacroix, Matisse, and Ingres among others, this revelation of a lost way of life will enchant anybody whose imagination has been inflamed by tales of a thousand and one nights."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Orientalism and Representations of Music in the Nineteenth-Century British Popular Arts by Claire Mabilat Pdf

Representations of music were employed to create a wider 'Orient' on the pages, stages and walls of nineteenth-century Britain. This book explores issues of orientalism, otherness, gender and sexuality that arise in artistic British representations of non-European musicians during this time, by utilizing recent theories of orientalism, and the subsidiary (particularly aesthetic and literary) theories both on which these theories were based and on which they have been influential. The author uses this theoretical framework of orientalism as a form of othering in order to analyse primary source materials, and in conjunction with musicological, literary and art theories, thus explores ways in which ideas of the Other were transformed over time and between different genres and artists. Part I, The Musical Stage, discusses elements of the libretti of popular musical stage works in this period, and the occasionally contradictory ways in which 'racial' Others was represented through text and music; a particular focus is the depiction of 'Oriental' women and ideas of sexuality. Through examination of this collection of libretti, the ways in which the writers of these works filter and romanticize the changing intellectual ideas of this era are explored. Part II, Works of Fiction, is a close study of the works of Sir Henry Rider Haggard, using other examples of popular fiction by his contemporary writers as contextualizing material, with the primary concern being to investigate how music is utilized in popular fiction to represent Other non-Europeans and in the creation of orientalized gender constructions. Part III, Visual Culture, is an analysis of images of music and the 'Orient' in examples of British 'high art', illustration and photography, investigating how the musical Other was visualized.
