Perspectives, Science and Technologies for Novel Silicon on Insulator Devices by Peter L.F. Hemment,Vladimir S. Lysenko,Alexei N. Nazarov Pdf

This proceedings volume contains the contributions of the speakers who attended the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Perspectives, Science and Technologies for Novel Silicon on Insulator Devices" held at the Sanatorium Pushcha OLema, Kyiv, th Ukraine from It" to 15 October 1998. This meeting was the second NATO Silicon on Insulator (SOl) Workshop to be held in st the Ukraine where the first meeting (Gurzuf, Crimea, 1 to 4th November 1994) focussed upon the physical and technical problems to be addressed in order to exploit the advantages of incorporating SOl materials in device and sensor technologies. On this occasion emphasis was placed upon firstly, promoting the use of SOl substrates for a range of novel device and circuit applications and secondly, addressing the economic issues of incorporating SOl processing technologies and device technologies within the framework of the resources available within the laboratories and factories of the Newly Independent States (NIS). The primary goal of both workshops has been the breaking of the barriers that inhibit closer collaboration between scientists and engineers in the NATO countries and the NIS. Indeed, it was a pleasure for attendees at the first meeting to renew acquaintances and for the first time attendees to make new contacts and enjoy the warm hospitality offered by our hosts in Kyiv. An outcome was the forging of new links and concrete proposals for future collaborations.

ESD by Steven H. Voldman Pdf

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) failure mechanisms continue to impact semiconductor components and systems as technologies scale from micro- to nano-electronics. This book studies electrical overstress, ESD, and latchup from a failure analysis and case-study approach. It provides a clear insight into the physics of failure from a generalist perspective, followed by investigation of failure mechanisms in specific technologies, circuits, and systems. The book is unique in covering both the failure mechanism and the practical solutions to fix the problem from either a technology or circuit methodology. Look inside for extensive coverage on: failure analysis tools, EOS and ESD failure sources and failure models of semiconductor technology, and how to use failure analysis to design more robust semiconductor components and systems; electro-thermal models and technologies; the state-of-the-art technologies discussed include CMOS, BiCMOS, silicon on insulator (SOI), bipolar technology, high voltage CMOS (HVCMOS), RF CMOS, smart power, gallium arsenide (GaAs), gallium nitride (GaN), magneto-resistive (MR) , giant magneto-resistors (GMR), tunneling magneto-resistor (TMR), devices; micro electro-mechanical (MEM) systems, and photo-masks and reticles; practical methods to use failure analysis for the understanding of ESD circuit operation, temperature analysis, power distribution, ground rule development, internal bus distribution, current path analysis, quality metrics, (connecting the theoretical to the practical analysis); the failure of each key element of a technology from passives, active elements to the circuit, sub-system to package, highlighted by case studies of the elements, circuits and system-on-chip (SOC) in today’s products. ESD: Failure Mechanisms and Models is a continuation of the author’s series of books on ESD protection. It is an essential reference and a useful insight into the issues that confront modern technology as we enter the Nano-electronic era.

Direct Copper Interconnection for Advanced Semiconductor Technology by Dongkai Shangguan Pdf

In the “More than Moore” era, performance requirements for leading edge semiconductor devices are demanding extremely fine pitch interconnection in semiconductor packaging. Direct copper interconnection has emerged as the technology of choice in the semiconductor industry for fine pitch interconnection, with significant benefits for interconnect density and device performance. Low-temperature direct copper bonding, in particular, will become widely adopted for a broad range of highperformance semiconductor devices in the years to come. This book offers a comprehensive review and in-depth discussions of the key topics in this critical new technology. Chapter 1 reviews the evolution and the most recent advances in semiconductor packaging, leading to the requirement for extremely fine pitch interconnection, and Chapter 2 reviews different technologies for direct copper interconnection, with advantages and disadvantages for various applications. Chapter 3 offers an in-depth review of the hybrid bonding technology, outlining the critical processes and solutions. The area of materials for hybrid bonding is covered in Chapter 4, followed by several chapters that are focused on critical process steps and equipment for copper electrodeposition (Chapter 5), planarization (Chapter 6), wafer bonding (Chapter 7), and die bonding (Chapter 8). Aspects related to product applications are covered in Chapter 9 for design and Chapter 10 for thermal simulation. Finally, Chapter 11 covers reliability considerations and computer modeling for process and performance characterization, followed by the final chapter (Chapter 12) outlining the current and future applications of the hybrid bonding technology. Metrology and testing are also addressed throughout the chapters. Business, economic, and supply chain considerations are discussed as related to the product applications and manufacturing deployment of the technology, and the current status and future outlook as related to the various aspects of the ecosystem are outlined in the relevant chapters of the book. The book is aimed at academic and industry researchers as well as industry practitioners, and is intended to serve as a comprehensive source of the most up-to-date knowledge, and a review of the state-of-the art of the technology and applications, for direct copper interconnection and advanced semiconductor packaging in general.
