An Introduction to Veterinary Medicine Engineering by Nadja Bressan,Catherine M. Creighton Pdf

Do cephalopods change color when under distress? Is the reptilian heart analogous to a diaphragm positive displacement pump? Are digital twins the answer for animal experimentation? This book explores the new field of veterinary engineering science and discusses how to better measure vital signs in exotic and companion animals. A vast opportunity exists for developing novel technologies that target reductions to the number of invasive procedures patients are subjected to. We examine improvements to animal care and enhancement of animal welfare while creating a more sustainable veterinary healthcare ecosystem. The authors address the challenges engineers face in designing healthcare equipment for animals and how the field of veterinary engineering contributes to traditional veterinary medicine. This book brings a novel field of engineering to train future veterinarians and engineers on design and application of technology to veterinary medicine. Serves as a learning resource for the training and education of veterinary students, veterinarians and engineers Demonstrates through experiments and case studies the merging point between engineering and veterinary medicine Discusses concepts and issues associated with engineering and veterinary medicine Illustrates veterinary challenges using an engineering-design approach Provides examples of veterinary applications with successful outcomes, incorporating step-by-step directions for engineers

Advances in Biomedical Engineering by J. H. U. Brown,James F. Dickson Pdf

Advances in Biomedical Engineering, Volume 5, is a collection of papers that deals with application of the principles and practices of engineering to basic and applied biomedical research, development, and the delivery of health care. The papers also describe breakthroughs in health improvements, as well as basic research that have been accomplished through clinical applications. One paper examines engineering principles and practices that can be applied in developing therapeutic systems by a controlled delivery system in drug dosage. Another paper examines the physiological and materials variables that can influence the stability of a biomaterial interface. The interface, in particular, concerns living and nonliving substances to create a functional and efficient replacement of a body part. For space use, NASA has developed bioinstrumentation systems that are reliable, safe, small, and subject-acceptable. Another paper examines the problems associated with the application of systems analysis to societies in the real world. The collection is suitable for biochemists, pharmacologists, bio-engineers, and investigators whose works involve biomedical engineering and drug therapeutics.

Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia by Leigh Lamont,Kurt Grimm,Sheilah Robertson,Lydia Love,Carrie Schroeder Pdf

VETERINARY ANESTHESIA AND ANALGESIA A thoroughly updated new edition of the foundational reference on veterinary anesthesia and analgesia Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia: The Sixth Edition of Lumb and Jones is a fully updated revision to this comprehensive, authoritative reference to all aspects of veterinary anesthesia and pain management. Encompassing both scientific principles and clinical applications, the new edition adds new knowledge, techniques, and discussion of emerging issues throughout. Fourteen new chapters significantly expand the coverage of patient monitoring modalities and nociception and pain, while presenting new information on safety culture, infection prevention and control, biomedical engineering, and point-of-care ultrasound. Logically organized into sections, information on basic principles, pharmacology, specific body systems, and specific species is easy to access. Comparative anesthetic considerations for dogs and cats, horses, ruminants, swine, laboratory animals, free-ranging terrestrial mammals, marine mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and birds are discussed. Chapters are devoted to anesthesia and pain management of common domestic species and patient populations, including updated chapters on local and regional anesthetic and analgesic techniques. A companion website offers video clips of point-of-care ultrasound techniques and pain assessment and scoring. Readers of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia: The Sixth Edition of Lumb and Jones will also find: Significantly expanded coverage of patient monitoring, including new chapters devoted to anesthetic depth and electroencephalography, electrocardiography, blood pressure, ventilation, oxygenation, and anesthetic gas monitoring. More in-depth coverage of respiratory physiology and pathophysiology, with new sections covering oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation, anesthetic management considerations for bronchoscopy, intrathoracic procedures, including one-lung ventilation, and patients with respiratory disease. Expanded coverage of pain physiology and pathophysiology, recognition and quantification of pain, and clinical pain management, including both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic modalities. For many years, laboratory dogs have served as important animal models for biomedical research that has advanced human health. Conducted at the request of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), this report assesses whether laboratory dogs are or will continue to be necessary for biomedical research related to the VA's mission. The report concludes that using laboratory dogs in research at the VA is scientifically necessary for only a few areas of current biomedical research. The report recommends that the VA adopt an expanded set of criteria for determining when it is scientifically necessary to use laboratory dogs in VA biomedical research; that the VA promote the development and use of alternatives to laboratory dogs; and highlights opportunities for the VA to enhance the welfare of laboratory dogs that are being used in biomedical research areas for which they have been deemed necessary.
