This volume is organized into 13 sections and contains 111 papers which represent about 80% of the total submitted. Section I contains papers on microbial cultures. Section II presents studies on recombinant DNA and microbial genetics. The papers in Section III deal with plant and animal cell and tissue culture. Section IV examines the microbial oxidation of hydrocarbons. Sections V and VI focus on continuous cultures and free-cell fermentation, respectively. Section VII examines process dynamics and control. Section VIII takes up computer applications in biotechnology, while Section IX covers process instrumentation and analytical methods. Section X contains papers on transport phenomena, mixing and scale-up. Section XI examines the design and operation of unconventional bioreactors. Sections XII covers fixed-, fluidized- and semi-fluidized bed bioreactors, while Section XIII presents studies on immobilization bioreactors. The volume also includes invited keynote addresses of Nobel Laureate, Professor Joshua Lederberg, and Professor Elmer L. Engineering Principles in Biotechnology by Wei-Shou Hu Pdf

This book is a short introduction to the engineering principles of harnessing the vast potential of microorganisms, and animal and plant cells in making biochemical products. It was written for scientists who have no background in engineering, and for engineers with minimal background in biology. The overall subject dealt with is process. But the coverage goes beyond the process of biomanufacturing in the bioreactor, and extends to the factory of cell’s biosynthetic machinery. Starting with an overview of biotechnology and organism, engineers are eased into biochemical reactions and life scientists are exposed to the technology of production using cells. Subsequent chapters allow engineers to be acquainted with biochemical pathways, while life scientist learn about stoichiometric and kinetic principles of reactions and cell growth. This leads to the coverage of reactors, oxygen transfer and scale up. Following three chapters on biomanufacturing of current and future importance, i.e. cell culture, stem cells and synthetic biology, the topic switches to product purification, first with a conceptual coverage of operations used in bioseparation, and then a more detailed analysis to provide a conceptual understanding of chromatography, the modern workhorse of bioseparation. Drawing on principles from engineering and life sciences, this book is for practitioners in biotechnology and bioengineering. The author has used the book for a course for advanced students in both engineering and life sciences. To this end, problems are provided at the end of each chapter.

Recent Advances in Biotechnology by F. Vardar-Sukan,S.S. Sukan Pdf

In last decades rapid scientific and engineering developments have been occuring within the context of Biotechnology. If the World Economy is to benefit fully from the advances in biosciences and biochemical engineering, it must be able to focus new knowledge on commercially appropriate targets. Modern Biotechnology is a mixture of far reaching innovation superimposed on an industrial background and it represents a means of production with bright prospects, challenging problems and stimulating competition. This NATO Advanced Study Institute on "RECENT ADVANCES IN INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS OF BIOTECHNOLOGY" held between September 16-27, 1991 in Ku§Etdasl was the first ASI on Biotechnology :Ln Turkey. !t was aiming to provide an updated overview of the fundamental principles, novel application areas and impact of Biotechnology on international economy. Recent developments in the field of Biotechnology have been thoroughly discussed, concentrating on various interdisciplinary aspects. The illain lectures presented at the Institute covered both scientific and commercial aspects of new developments in biotechnology and discussed the possible ways of meeting the challenges of the industry. The main lectures were supplemented by Oral 2nd Poster Presentations. Thus, this volume is comprised of three sections. Part I contains the i~vited lectures and Part II oral presentations. Exte~ded abstracts of poster presentations have been included in Part III to provide a more comprehensive coverage of the ASI.

Biotechnology: Scientific Advancement Versus Public Safety by Conrad B Quintyn Pdf

In this book, Dr Quintyn considers whether genetic engineering will exacerbate social injustices and/or lead to public safety issues. As designer babies mature, will they feel a sense of superiority or pass on mutations that negatively affect future generations? Should we ignore the risk of zoonotic (animal) diseases because they offer potential benefits for reducing organ shortages? Scientific advancement, if not guided responsibly and with public input, can be detrimental to public safety. This book is unique as it encompasses many biotechnologies within the definition of biotechnology. It gives a balanced view of biotechnology: its promise as evidenced in repairing mutations (i.e., genetic editing) and its dangers evidenced in creating (unintentionally) dangerous microbes or unregulated germline editing and cloning. Additionally, this book includes animals in biotechnological research because the success, advances, techniques, and science of genetic engineering could not have occurred without using animals (and microorganisms, insects, plants) as model organisms. A comprehensive description of the CRISPR system in bacteria and the exploitation of this knowledge in creating the CRISPR/Cas9 technology is also incorporated in this read. The author's overall goal is to discuss other biotechnology that is being used to improve and put at risk the health, environment, and safety of humans, giving the book a competitive edge. Furthermore, the book provides a provocative side in challenging scientists to consider the current belief governing research and development, which is that scientific advancement and public safety create a false dichotomy.
