Advances in Dopamine Research by M. Kohsaka,T. Shohmori,Y. Tsukada Pdf

Advances in Dopamine Research documents the proceedings of a satellite symposium to the 8th International Congress of Pharmacology held in Okayama, Japan, July 1981. The importance of dopamine in brain function is reflected in this volume book by the chapters on the neurochemical, behavioral, neuroanatomical, and electrophysiological aspects of dopamine in the central nervous system. Dopamine receptor agonists and antagonists enjoy widespread use in the treatment of various brain disorders. A comprehensive account of research on the actions and mechanisms of action of drugs which affect central dopaminergic pathways is included in this volume. Also presented are accounts of the importance of dopamine and dopamine receptors in the periphery. It is hoped that this volume will be of interest to neuroscientists and pharmacologists, and indeed to all who are interested in clinical and scientific aspects of dopamine and other neurotransmitters.

New Developments in Dopamine Research by Glen Hopkins Pdf

Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter in human brain, and it is involved in many activities under physiological and pathological conditions of humans and mammals, especially in sports regulation, learning and memory, as well as drug addiction. Lack of dopamine can lead to a number of diseases such as schizophrenia, depression, and Parkinson's Disease. Thus, the studies of dopamine are of great importance in many disciplines such as neurophysiology, clinical medicine, and the pharmaceutical sciences. In recent years, more and more researchers have focused on the detection of dopamine and many different types of testing methods have emerged. Chapter One in this book reviews different kinds of electrodes used in the detection of dopamine and the stability, selectivity, sensitivity of those electrodes. Chapter Two presents a discussion about the modulation of the dopamine synthesis and release in the retina by light, clock genes and melatonin. Chapter Three summarises the most recent findings on the role of central D2, D3 and D4 receptors on erectile function and sexual behavior.

Serotonin-Dopamine Interaction: Experimental Evidence and Therapeutic Relevance by Giuseppe Di Giovanni,Vincenzo Di Matteo,Ennio Esposito Pdf

This book provides a unique and timely multidisciplinary synthesis of our current knowledge of the anatomy, pharmacology, physiology and behavioral data of the serotonin (5-HT)-dopamine (DA) interactions. Central serotonergic and dopaminergic systems play a critical role in the regulation of normal and abnormal behaviors. Moreover, recent evidence suggests that the dysfunction of the DA and 5-HT neurotransmitter systems contribute to various mental disorders including depression, schizophrenia, drug addiction and Parkinson's disease. This extremely important topic is of wide interest within the scientific community, with relevance not only to specialists but also to general practitioners and students. The book provides a valuable contribution to the debate on new pharmacological approaches for several psychopathological states, with contributions from expert neuroscientists and pharmacologists who comprehensively survey the most significant currently active areas of dopamine/serotonin interactions. * Provides an understanding of the interaction between Serotonin and Dopamine. * Appeals equally to specialists, general practitioners, students and researchers. * Contributes to the debate on new pharmacological approaches to several psychopathological states * Gives a comprehensive anatomical description plus the physiology and pharmacology of dopaminergic and serotonergic systems * Singles out neuropsychiatric and suggests new therapeutic approaches.

Dopamine Research Advances by Akiyama Watanabe Pdf

Dopamine is a phenethylamine naturally produced by the human body. In the brain, dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter, activating the five types of dopamine receptor -- D1, D2, D3, D4 and D5, and their variants. Dopamine is produced in several areas of the brain, including the substantia nigra. Dopamine is also a neurohormone released by the hypothalamus. Its main function as a hormone is to inhibit the release of prolactin from the anterior lobe of the pituitary. Dopamine can be supplied as a medication that acts on the sympathetic nervous system, producing effects such as increased heart rate and blood pressure. However, since dopamine cannot cross the blood-brain barrier, dopamine given as a drug does not directly affect the central nervous system. To increase the amount of dopamine in the brains of patients with diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Dopa-Responsive Dystonia, L-DOPA (levodopa), which is the precursor of dopamine, can be given because it can cross the blood-brain barrier. This book presents new research in the field.

Mapping the Brain and Its Functions by Institute of Medicine,Division of Biobehavioral Sciences and Mental Disorders,Division of Health Sciences Policy,Committee on a National Neural Circuitry Database Pdf

Significant advances in brain research have been made, but investigators who face the resulting explosion of data need new methods to integrate the pieces of the "brain puzzle." Based on the expertise of more than 100 neuroscientists and computer specialists, this new volume examines how computer technology can meet that need. Featuring outstanding color photography, the book presents an overview of the complexity of brain research, which covers the spectrum from human behavior to genetic mechanisms. Advances in vision, substance abuse, pain, and schizophrenia are highlighted. The committee explores the potential benefits of computer graphics, database systems, and communications networks in neuroscience and reviews the available technology. Recommendations center on a proposed Brain Mapping Initiative, with an agenda for implementation and a look at issues such as privacy and accessibility.

Electrochemical Methods for Neuroscience by Adrian C. Michael,Laura Borland Pdf

Since the first implant of a carbon microelectrode in a rat 35 years ago, there have been substantial advances in the sensitivity, selectivity and temporal resolution of electrochemical techniques. Today, these methods provide neurochemical information that is not accessible by other means. The growing recognition of the versatility of electrochemi
