Dear Everybody... by Herbert Yudenfriend Pdf

When I returned home after being discharged from the army in September 1947, my mother gave me a carton containing all of the letters I had written home, in their original envelopes, with the pictures and other memorabilia that came with them. That carton stayed unopened for 60 years, because I never felt any compulsion to read the letters or in any way relive my army experience. In fact, this book might never have been written if it were not for that carton and for the fact that our daughter, Paula Yudenfriend Green, persisted in overcoming my resistance to being videographed with my wife, Minya, for the purpose of describing our life experiences for our progeny. The evening before we were scheduled to be videographed, I opened the box of letters, and read about ten of them. It was then that I realized the need to read all of the letters, and I began the next day as soon as the videographers had left. I was amazed at the amount of personal and American history they contained, especially since all the letters were written when I was between 17 and 19 years old. I was also impressed with their clarity and perceptiveness. Ive never been the same since I read the letters, and this book is the result. Many things contained in the book were not included in the letters. Events occurred about which I didnt write, because I didnt want to cause concerns at home about my physical condition or the potentially dangerous or ugly situations in which I was involved. I have also included clarifications and elaborations of events described in the letters that I think are appropriate to better understand the experiences which I had. After more than 60 years, I have forgotten details of some of the things that happened, and the names of people with whom I had contact, some on a daily basis. On the whole, however, I found that putting this book together was a fascinating journey, and I hope you find it so as you read it.

Not illustrated. 1852 edition. Excerpt: ... enemy's shot, their grape and canister occasionally played in among us, so that although it was freezing hard at the time, we had no reason to complain of not having a good fire. Now was the time to cure a skulker, or teach a man to work for his "life." There we were, in twos, each provided with a pick-axe and shovel; now digging with a vengeance into the frozen mould, and then watching the glances of the shot and shell; and again sticking to work like devils, or perhaps pitching ourselves on our bellies to avoid their being "purged" with grape or cannister. CHAPTER XIII. Cold reception--Preparation to storm Rodrigo--I join the "Forlorn-Hope"-- The breaches--General Crauford killed--Uniacke mortally wounded--Major Napier wounded--Taking of the town--A rough customer--Wilkie again-- Death of Wllkie--A gift--The left breach after the battle-- Wilkie's graveHorrors of a storm-- This is my niece, Sir--The right breach--Captain Uniacke --The Light Division leave Rodrigo in disguise--Who the devil are those fellows ?-- We enter El Bodon. The following day we were relieved by the third division, and marched back to our quarters, cold, hungry, and fatigued enough. One great annoyance we experienced at this time, was having to cross the Agueda in going to and returning from the trenches. Pieces of ice that were constantly carried down this' rapid stream bruised our men so much, that, to obviate it, the cavalry at length were ordered to form four deep across the ford, under the lee of whom we crossed comparatively unharmed, although by the time we reached our quarters, our clothes were frozen into a mass of ice. Our divisions continued relieving each other in the trenches for some days, until two breaches were considered practicable for an...

Exploits and Adventures of a Soldier Ashore and Afloat (Classic Reprint) by William Llewellyn Adams Pdf

Excerpt from Exploits and Adventures of a Soldier Ashore and Afloat As an author I do not wish to be misunderstood. I merely desire to portray what has come under my observation, rather than make a Marathon with the laurels of so dignified a profession, and in so doing communicate to those whose arduous duties at home have deprived them of the romance of globetrotting, and thereby distribute the knowledge that some more silent person might never unfetter. In conclusion to this preface, I desire to say, that I have refrained from the manufacture of episodes or any tendency toward fiction, which I trust the following pages will confirm, and that, as from the description of a spectator, these narratives will meet with the approval of those into whose hands they might chance to fall. A picaresque series of tales about an ordinary man's successful quest to survive, and a funny but unrelentingly savage assault on the very idea of bureaucratic officialdom as a human enterprise conferring benefits on those who live under its control, and on the various justifications bureaucracies offer for their own existence.

A Soldier of the Legion by George Manington Pdf

"The restless spirit of adventure which prompted the author, Mr George Manington, to enlist in the French Foreign Legion, at a later date called him post haste from London, and thus caused us, his friends, to promise to see the manuscript of "A Soldier of the Legion" through the press. Though well under forty years of age, he had been a student in France and Germany, a prospective doctor in Paris, a soldier in Algeria and Tonquin, a man of commerce in Indo-China, an interpreter, traveller, and journalist in South China, besides a participator in more fleeting occupations in many lands, including Japan and the Philippines. It was in the restful periods between these various enterprises that this book was written." -Preface
