Bowditch, Houghton, Mifflin & Co., 1902] appears the following letter [vol. ii. p. 315]: -- TO MRS. GEORGE L. STEARNS. May 9, 1887. Dear Mrs. Stearns, -- I forgot to leave with you the riddle 1 found in a book of autographs made chiefly between the years 1610 and 1630. The riddle has the date of 1742, and is signed by one Fulda, at that time the possessor of the precious heirlooms of the family Von Olnhausen; and which had been carefully kept and transmitted to sons of that name for one hundred and thirty-two years. The Von Olnhausens dated their origin from a gallant Crusader, Heinrich Olnhausen, who in 1388 had been made " Knight of the Golden Spur" at Jerusalem. The autographs collected by one of his descendants (an earnest student, between 1610 and 1630) of all the great personages (nobility with their illuminated coats of arms, professors 1 A M O R E S. 6. Sex fuge, 5. Quinque tene, 4. Quatuor fac, Reliqua (RES) tibi sequcntur. of many universities, pastors of churches, great physicians, and lettered young companions) were in two volumes, and by marriage had come into Fulda's hands. He, with a true instinct, felt that they ought to be in the hands of his young relative, the male descendant of the Von Olnhausens. Therefore in 1742 he transferred them to John Frederick Olnhausen, telling him that he hoped that these precious relics of the good youth of 1610 would stimulate his loving descendants to behave as heroically as his predecessors had done, and he gave the enclosed riddle, which as I have before stated I forgot to leave. To finish my story, I ought to tell you how they came into my possession. Some few years...

Adventures of an Army Nurse in Two Wars (Classic Reprint) by Mary Phinney von Olnhausen Pdf

Excerpt from Adventures of an Army Nurse in Two Wars The first New England Phinney, John, came to Cape Cod about nine years after the landing of the Pilgrims, and settled in what is now the town of Scituate. His son John married Mary Rogers, granddaughter to that Thomas Rogers who was a passenger on the first Mayflower voyage and a signer of the Compact. In the third genera tion from them was a Benjamin Phinney who, since he removed to Granville, Nova Scotia, in 1774, and did not return until 1786, it is fair to presume was a Tory. This suspicion is deepened by the fact that he did not come back to F almouth, where he was born, but to Lexington, at that time remote enough from Cape Cod to escape any pos sible lingerings of local animosity. An Army Nurse in Two Wars by Mary Phinney Pdf

Her life has been wonderfully fictionalized on the hit PBS TV series, "Mercy Street." Here is Mary Phinney's real life in her own words, long prized by historians as a source about Civil War medicine.American Mary Phinney was ahead of her time. A rebel against the restrictions placed on women of her day, the sad death of her husband, the Barron von Olnhausen, proved to be the real beginning of her life.Upon the outbreak of the American Civil War, this remarkable woman enlisted herself in the care of sick and wounded soldiers. Working with Dorothea Dix and other notable women of the Civil War, she tirelessly worked to improve the sanitary conditions, medical care, and morale of shattered young men.Hardly taking a breath from her exhausting years in the Civil War, she went to Europe in 1870 to provide the same services in the Franco-Prussian War. Her experiences as related through her own writing is the story of one of the great women of the 19th century.Mary Phinney von Olnhausen early found her happiness in living, in suffering, in encountering hardships for the sake of others. She was too human to be a saint, of too intense a vitality to be thoroughly well balanced; but she was what the world most needs,--an unflagging, unselfish, optimistic moral force.

So Help Me God: Adventures of a WWII Army Nurse by Elizabeth Czizek Feldt Pdf

Libby Feldt treats the reader to a delightful first-person account as a young nurse commissioned in the Army Nurse Corps and deployed in France and Germany during World War II, 1944-1946. We see her commitment begin by taking the oath of office from her father in their Dubuque, Iowa living room, develop at basic training in Colorado, and get honed during the Atlantic Ocean crossing to England. Her unit's orders are to establish the 200th General Hospital in France after its recent liberation from Germany. We follow Libby and her friends through England, France and Germany and hear of their encounters with the Glenn Miller Band, Bob Hope and General Patton. We celebrate Armistice and mourn the ravages of war. Libby Feldt's story is a tribute to the indefatigable spirit of a young nurse.

And If I Perish by Evelyn Monahan,Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee Pdf

In World War II, 59,000 women voluntarily risked their lives for their country as U.S. Army nurses. When the war began, some of them had so little idea of what to expect that they packed party dresses; but the reality of service quickly caught up with them, whether they waded through the water in the historic landings on North African and Normandy beaches, or worked around the clock in hospital tents on the Italian front as bombs fell all around them. For more than half a century these women’s experiences remained untold, almost without reference in books, historical societies, or military archives. After years of reasearch and hundreds of hours of interviews, Evelyn M. Monahan and Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee have created a dramatic narrative that at last brings to light the critical role that women played throughout the war. From the North African and Italian Campaigns to the Liberation of France and the Conquest of Germany, U.S. Army nurses rose to the demands of war on the frontlines with grit, humor, and great heroism. A long overdue work of history, And If I Perish is also a powerful tribute to these women and their inspiring legacy.
