Affliction and Desertion by J. East,John Flavel,Stephen Charnock,Augustus Toplady Pdf

Affliction and misery are the common burden of the sons of Adam. In the present life, all are subject to misery, some more, some less. We walk through a valley of tears, live in a groaning world; none have such an uninterrupted current of worldly happiness but that they have their crosses and afflictions. These things are common to man. We are told in the book of Job, 5: 7, "Man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward:" and xiv. 1, "Man that is born of a woman, is of few days and full of trouble." None can reasonably expect to be absolutely exempted from the common lot of human fallen nature. Though life be short yet is it long enough to be vexed with many sorrows. "Few and evil have the days of the years of my life been," saith old Jacob, Gen. xlvii. 9. Since they are evil, it is well they are but few. Few men consider this, that they come into the world to bear crosses but rather imagine they come hither to spend their days in pleasure; at least they do not observe the true cause of their troubles, nor the remedy. The true cause is sin. Man's transgressions are the door by which it entered. And the proper remedy is the grace of God in Jesus Christ. Whatever, then, may be the particular and various dispensations of God towards men, yet to be miserable in some sort or degree is common to all Adam's posterity, which should make us look higher than the present life.It may be asked, -what need was there for another book on the subject of affliction? Have we not already those that are excellent? - Hill's "It is Well."-Cecil's "Visit to the House of Mourning."- "Griffith and The Wall of Affliction." To this I would answer, in the language of St. Paul, or rather of HIM, by whom St. Paul was inspired, "Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort; Who Comforteth us in all our tribulation, that We may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble by the comfort, wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God," 2 Cor. i. 3, 4.

The Digital Puritan - Vol.V, No.2 by Hugh Binning,George Whitefield,Francis Roberts,Thomas Boston,Thomas Watson,Joel Beeke,Mark Jones Pdf

The Digital Puritan is a biannual digest of carefully selected Puritan works, providing a steady diet of sound Puritan teaching. The language has been gently modernised to render it more readable, while still retaining much of the flavour and character of the original text. Hundreds of helpful notes and Scripture references (in the English Standard Version®) are included as end-notes; no internet connection is needed. The following articles appear in this autumn/winter 2015 special edition, "The Word of God": 1. The Authority and Utility of the Scriptures – Hugh Binning. The necessity of learning and practising what the Bible teaches is shown from 2 Timothy 3:16-17. 2. The Duty of Searching the Scriptures – George Whitefield. In which Whitefield illustrates the two great messages of the Scripture (our fallen nature and the grace of God) and gives directions on how to make time spent in Scripture most profitable. Based on John 5:39. 3. The Great Worth of Scripture Knowledge – Francis Roberts. Roberts gives seven helpful directions on how to better read and understand the Word of God. 4. How the Word is to be Read and Heard – Thomas Boston. From Luke 8:18 ("Take heed therefore how ye hear"), Boston teaches how to prepare our hearts for receiving the Word, and how to apply it to our daily lives. 5. How We May Read the Scriptures with Most Spiritual Profit – Thomas Watson. Watson's own collection of twenty-four directions on how to read the Scripture for greatest benefit. 6. The Puritan Practice of Meditation – Drs. Joel R. Beeke and Mark Jones. To read the Scripture is not enough; it must permeate the mind and affect the heart. The authors show how the Puritans used meditation this effect.

The Art of Suffering and the Impact of Seventeenth-century Anti-Providential Thought by Ann Thompson Pdf

This title was first published in 2003. 'The art of suffering' is one of many strands of literature on suffering published in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This book explores through the art of suffering the way in which the meaning for suffering, which the seventeenth century inherited from the Middle Ages and which centres on the role of suffering as a manifestation of the hand of God in the process of salvation, is refined and enhanced by successive puritan writers only to crumble under the impact of emerging anti-providential thought. It goes on to explore the challenge which the absence of meaning for suffering presents to the Judaeo-Christian concept of an omnipotent and infinitely good God, and the ways in which themes and doctrines already present in the literature on suffering are reshaped and recombined to defend the omnipotence and infinite goodness of God.
