African-American Proverbs in Context by Anand Prahlad Pdf

Such sayings as "Hard times make a monkey eat red pepper when he don't care for black", "The blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice", and "Nothing ruins a duck but its bill" convey not only axiomatic impact but also profound contextual meanings. This study of African-American proverbs is the first to probe deeply into these meanings and contexts. Sw. Anand Prahlad's interest in proverbs dates back to his own childhood in rural Virginia when he listened to his great-grandmother's stories. Very early he began collecting "sayings". In researching this book, he spent five years listening for proverbs spoken in bars, clubs, churches, and retirement homes; on street corners, basketball courts, and public buses; at PTA meetings and bingo games. To discover the full context of a proverb, Prahlad considers four levels of meanings - grammatical, cultural, situational, and symbolic. All these operate simultaneously when a proverb is spoken. Part of the artistry in using proverbs comes from the complex interplay of the dimensions of their meanings. From WPA interviews with former slaves, from the lyrics of blues songs, from extensive field research, and from expressions of protest and cultural affirmation, the author reveals the myriad ways African-American proverbs thrive today.

You'll learn some witty and concise responses to say to your children. As they remember and repeat them to their children, your words will become a cherished memory. Los Angeles, California -- Is it ever correct to use Ebonics? Will recognition of Ebonics by the educational established condemn an entire generation of African-American students to failure? Heated debate and controversy continue as a key factor is often overlooked: context. Ebonics, in proper context, is a valid and relevant form of language in the classroom and beyond. Ebonics is not just street slang with fractures of the verb To Be. Past generations of African-Americans who lacked formal education developed a unique, emphatic dialect which they used to express themselves eloquently, often in proverbs and sayings which endure to this day. In As The Old Folks Usta' Say... Black Proverbs, Sayings and Folk-wit, Ebonics occurs in a natural context. Readers will develop a new appreciation and respect for its power to communicate. Each generation in the family will enjoy the over 250 hilarious, wise and witty adages. Devoted exclusively to African-American oral literature, this book is a refreshing change from run-of-the-millethnic proverbs. Proverb Masters by Raymond Summerville Pdf

In Proverb Masters: Shaping the Civil Rights Movement, author Raymond Summerville explores how proverbs and proverbial language played a significant role in the long civil rights era. Proverbs have been used throughout history to share and disseminate brief, powerful statements of truth and philosophical insight. Oftentimes, these sayings have helped unite people in struggles for social justice, serving as rallying cries for just causes. During the civil rights era, proverbs allowed leaders to craft powerful and evocative messages. These statements needed to be made implicitly, as explicit messages were often met with retaliation and even violence. Looking at the autobiographies, biographies, speeches, diaries, letters, and critical texts of Charles W. Chesnutt, Ida B. Wells, A. Philip Randolph, Bob Dylan, Malcom X, Stokely Carmichael, and Septima Clark, the volume analyzes how these figures employed proverbs in support of social justice causes and in civil rights struggles. Summerville argues that these individuals generated enough print material embedded with proverbs and proverbial language that they should be considered proverb masters. With chapters dedicated to each figure, Summerville reveals their adept uses of this powerful linguistic tool.

Bringing in a New Era in Character Education by William Damon Pdf

The educational system in the United States has ended its failed experiment with separating the intellectual from the moral. Schools from K–12 to colleges and universities are increasingly paying attention to students' values and character. But how can we ensure this new era in character education makes the right kind of difference to young people? What obstacles in our current educational system must we overcome, and what new opportunities can we create? This anthology offers unique perspectives on what is needed to make character education an effective, lasting part of our educational agenda. Each chapter points out the directions that character education must take today and offers strategies essential for progress. The expert contributors reveal why relativism has threatened the moral development of young people in our time—and how we can pass core values down to new generations of students in ways that will elevate their conduct and their life goals. And they show the critical importance of reestablishing student morality and character as targets of higher education's central mission. Perhaps most important, they clarify the necessity of authority in any moral education endeavor—and show how it is a powerful force for developing personal freedom and building character.

Mama Said by Bennie Newroth Pdf

Mama Said.is an effort to record, for future generations, the words of wisdom from our ancestors. It is not intended to be a scholarly thesis. Rather, it is a fond remembrance of the teachings of our mothers. It is a realization that we are our mother's children and that the same advice we thought we had heard enough of, we are now giving to our children. In doing so, we are, perhaps unwittingly passing our culture down to another generation. Our mothers' voices were ones of wisdom. They gave us words of wisdom that had been passed down from their mamas and other women of the village. Such wisdom had a special energy: it affirmed the truth. In many instances, the wisdom was deeply rooted in the African-American culture and in the Bible. Mama's wisdom did not require big words or dissertations. Quite the contrary, all that was required was common sense and plain words. Mama used proverbs to express in a few words universal truths and undeniable wisdom. This wisdom has never gone out of style. It is as relevant today as it was when we were children and our mothers were young women.

"Right Makes Might" by Wolfgang Mieder Pdf

“A powerful and timely addition to the literature of rhetoric and folklore.” —Choice In 1860, Abraham Lincoln employed the proverb Right makes might—opposite of the more aggressive Might makes right—in his famed Cooper Union address. While Lincoln did not originate the proverb, his use of it in this critical speech indicates that the fourteenth century phrase had taken on new ethical and democratic connotations in the nineteenth century. In this collection, famed scholar of proverbs Wolfgang Mieder explores the multifaceted use and function of proverbs through the history of the United States, from their early beginnings up through their use by such modern-day politicians as Barack Obama, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Bernie Sanders. Building on previous publications and unpublished research, Mieder explores sociopolitical aspects of the American worldview as expressed through the use of proverbs in politics, women’s rights, and the civil rights movement—and by looking at the use of proverbial phrases, Mieder demonstrates how one traditional phrase can take on numerous expressive roles over time, and how they continue to play a key role in our contemporary moment.

Behold the Proverbs of a People by Wolfgang Mieder Pdf

The thirteen chapters of this book comprise an intriguing and informative entry into the world of proverb scholarship, illustrating that proverbs have always been and continue to be wisdom's international currency. The first section of the book focuses on the field of paremiology (proverb studies) in general, the spread of Anglo-American proverbs in Europe, and the phenomenon of modern proverbs. The second section analyzes the use of proverbs in the world of politics, including a chapter on President Obama, while the third concentrates on the uses of proverbs in literature. The final section ends with detailed cultural studies of the origin, history, dissemination, use, function, and meaning of specific proverbs. Noted scholar Wolfgang Mieder shows that proverbs matter in culture, literature, and politics. Proverbs remain part and parcel of oral and written communication, and, he demonstrates, they deserve to be studied from a range of viewpoints. While various chapters deal with a variety of issues and approaches, they cohere through a rhetorical perspective that looks at the text, texture, and context of proverbs as speech acts that make a noteworthy impact on culture and society. Whether proverbs appear in everyday speech, on the radio, on television, in films, on the pages of newspapers or magazines, in advertisements, in literary works, or in political speeches, they serve as formulaic verbal devices to add authoritative weight through tradition, convention, and wisdom.
