African Industrial Development and European Union Co-operation by Francis A.S.T. Matambalya Pdf

Of the 54African states, only South Africa is categorised by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) amongst industrialised countries. The economic activities in Africa are still dominated by the production and trade of agricultural and mineral commodities. This situation is in spite of the longstanding Africa--European Union (EU) co-operation, which intends, among other things, to support Africa’s industrialisation endeavours. Imperatively, a long road to substantive levels of industrialisation still lies ahead of most African countries. This raises the question as to what role the international community could and should play in the twenty-first century to provide the support needed to expedite Africa’s industrial transformation. This book argues that to supplement the initiatives of each African country, international partnerships, of both a ‘North–South’ and ‘South–South’ nature, will serve better purposes if they are leveraged to develop productive capacities in African economies. In order to enable the African countries to leverage their traditional partnership with the EU for industrialisation, a paradigm shift is obligatory. A feasible model should emulate the Japanese-led ‘flying geese’ model and the Chinese-led ‘bamboo capitalism’ model.

Revisiting EU-Africa Relations in a Changing World by Fargion, Valeria,Gazibo, Mamoudou Pdf

This timely book explores the current state of EU-Africa relations from a multidisciplinary perspective, placing emphasis on recent developments in five areas that are crucial for EU-Africa relations: development cooperation, trade, migration, security and democratization. It considers how Africa’s dependence on the EU has decreased due to the declining importance of development cooperation, and increasing cooperation with emerging powers, notably the BRIC nations.

The Changing Face of EU-African Cooperation in Science and Technology by European Commission. International Cooperation Pdf

"Africa is a continent with a great pool of untapped scientific talent. The brain-power is there, but the means to translate it into scientific input for socio-economic development need further enhancement. Increasing S & T capacity through cooperation will give African countries and people the tools and skills to create/adapt and disseminate knowledge to mitigate current weaknesses. It will help Africa to develop its resources and provide ways and means to deliver prosperity and sustainable development to its people. Policy measures to promote and support sustainable S & T capacity building relevant to Africa's economic growth are increasingly undertaken within Africa. Africans themselves have set their own priorities for S & T. The EU supports and contributes to the realisation of Africa's S & T objectives. This brochure outlines the development of European S & T cooperation with Africa over the recent past. It illustrates the link between the political framework, the commitments, the toolkit of mechanisms available and the action on the ground."--Editor.

China and the European Union in Africa by Benjamin Barton Pdf

China's rise on the international scene over the past few years has correlated with its exponential economic growth. The European Union (EU), the world's largest development aid provider, has been feeling the heat of Beijing's closer ties with Africa. As a result, the EU's overall policy-making towards Africa has suffered from a loss of credibility and this has been further exposed both by the success of China's investments in Africa, and by the favourable response that China's investment proposals have received from African leaders. Dividing the book into five parts, the editors and an outstanding line up of Chinese and European contributors guide the reader through the complexities of China's rising influence in Africa, but they also analyse if and how the EU should adapt to this. Promoting Stability and Development in Africa by Marta Martinelli,Nicoletta Pirozzi Pdf

Africa is experiencing one of the greatest transformations of its history. Today’s Sub-Saharan Africa is still marked by enduring instability, mass migrations and crises, but at the same time it is also characterised by positive developments including economic growth and regional integration. This publication sheds light on these changes from three perspectives: economic policies and sustainable development; good governance and democracy; peace and security. Research in relevant regions in Sub-Saharan Africa and key countries (Ethiopia, Mozambique, Nigeria and South Africa) has been conducted by African and European experts with the aim of assessing the role of the private sector and determining the partner-ship opportunities that could potentially be developed with the public sector. A series of policy recommendations are offered to the European Union on how to tackle these opportunities in cooperation with old and new actors.

African Development and Europe by Peter Tregear,John Burley Pdf

African Development and Europe focuses on various areas of cooperation between Europe and Africa with respect to development, including agricultural and industrial development, technological cooperation, and political relationships. Topics covered include the diversification of African agriculture and the role of private investors in African development, along with changes in trading relations between Europe and Africa. Problems of rural development and the role of the civil service in development are also discussed. This book is comprised of 11 chapters and begins by providing a background on African agriculture, including its diversification and the agricultural revolution in West African countries. The discussion then turns to the establishment of an industrial complex in Africa; the contribution of the private investor to African development; the importance of manpower and management in Africa's industrial development; and changes in commercial relations between Europe and Africa. The activities carried out by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research in Africa are also discussed. The final chapter deals with the political relations between Africa and Europe, paying particular attention to Pan-Africanism and how Africa's dependence on Europe affects the pace towards Pan-African unity. This monograph will be of interest to diplomats, politicians, policymakers, and postgraduate students concerned with international relations.

Sustainable Development in Africa-EU relations by Mark Langan,Sophia Price Pdf

The European Union has been one of the most vocal advocates of ‘sustainable development’, particularly in its dealings with developing countries. Even prior to the formulation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the EU has insisted upon the need for sustainable approaches to poverty reduction and economic growth in the Global South. When examining EU relations with African countries as part of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group, however, it becomes clear that the translation of Europe’s sustainability discourse into practice is highly problematic. Notably, there are concerns that the EU’s free market approach to development – embodied in its EPA trade deals – is incompatible with genuine, pro-poor forms of sustainable growth. Moreover, the EU is often seen as a hegemonic actor whose trade and aid interventions in Africa often do more to perpetuate poverty than to ameliorate it. This book casts a critical light on Africa-EU relations with regards to the EU’s sustainability pledges. It does this through looking at an array of issues – not least trade, aid, the environment, and democratic institutions. In this vein, the book poses a challenge to EU trade and development discourse in the era of the UN SDGs. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue in Third World Thematics: A TWQ Journal.

Europe and Africa by Giovanni Carbone Pdf

A year and a half after the new Strategy with Africa proposed by the European Commission was made public, the new partnership between the two continents is still being defined. The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic with Africa’s first economic recession in 25 years and a sharp rise in poverty and debt has created new challenges for the two continents’ agenda, highlighting new gaps to address on the way forward. With the European Union-African Union summit scheduled for February 2022, the definition of the new partnership is once again gathering momentum, while both sides are still trying to define common positions. Will these two “natural partners” be able to tackle the most urgent challenges and turn them into opportunities for collaboration and engagement? What are the priority issues, and which ones are potentially most divisive?
