Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm by LeVar Burton,Susan Schaefer Bernardo,Courtenay Fletcher Pdf

Actor and longtime educational advocate LeVar Burton has had more than 30 years' experience speaking directly to children about grown-up situations, and The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm is a story that helps ease the fears and worries of a young childMica Mouse lost her house in a terrible storm, and now she trembles when the weather turns rough. She's not so different from other children who've experienced something very disturbing in their life or heard about tragic or frightening events in the news. Mica's father tells her the story of a brave blue rhinoceros who learns how to get through rough times with friendship, helpers, love, and by "feeling your feelings." LeVar Burton has poured a lifetime of experience storytelling to children into The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm, and the result is more than a book—it's a manual for finding the light in the midst of dark times.

Shadows Point to Rainbows by Linda Franklin Pdf

Down through history, dogs have been great friends to humans. Dog owners know how remarkably dogs can adapt. They are intelligent, compassionate, loyal, and protective. Shadows Point to Rainbows: An Unwanted Dog Becomes an Injured Boy’s Best Friend is a tribute to one German shepherd, who was providentially assigned to a young man living in north-central Oregon. With a tap at the door, “Champion” came into young Jed Franklin's life. His mother faithfully recounts how this loving and faithful friend stood by his master, helping him recover from a life-threatening, life-changing accident when he was eight years old so he could grow into manhood. This touching and faith-building story about a gift of God wrapped in fur was written to share lessons and encouragements from the providential events of the life of a boy growing up with his dog. Rather than withdrawing into himself, the young man was able to see the rainbows of life that follow the clouds.

Violence and Trauma in the Lives of Children by Joy D. Osofsky,Betsy McAlister Groves Pdf

Explains the neurological, emotional, and behavioral impacts of violence and trauma experienced by newborns, infants, children, and teenagers. Traumatic events known as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can affect children physically, mentally, and emotionally, sometimes with long-term health and behavioral effects. Abuse, neglect, exposure to community and domestic violence, and household dysfunction all have the potential to alter brain development and behavior, but few people are able to recognize or respond to trauma in children. Given the prevalence of childhood exposure to violence—with one in four children ages 5 to 15 living in households with only moderate levels of safety and nurturance and infants and children ages 0 to 3 comprising the highest percentage of those maltreated—it is imperative that students and professionals alike be able to identify types and consequences of violence and trauma. This book provides readers with the information they need in order to know how to detect and prevent ACEs and to help children who have lived through them.

The Seasons of Life by Sandra Nairen Pdf

The Book of Ecclesiastes says that there is a time and a season for everything and a purpose under heaven. You will find that these poems cover spring, summer, autumn, and winter. I feel as though we go through seasons in our lives: spring, when things are just starting to bloom; summer, when everything is right in our lives and the sun seems to be shining; autumn, when our lives start to fall apart like the leaves; and winter, when it is dark and everything seems wrong and with no hope.

This book was written from the point of helping people of all walks of life. Remember, just one of life's little details can change life's meaning. The power of faith, the power of love, and the power of the human spirit–they are as far apart as they can be in this life. Yet it's these three elements that when combined can change who you are and what you can be. There is an expression through mortal eyes, and it is based on this fact and is true. The whole of the human race must realize that they can only look at life through mortal eyes. You would be surprised not only at what you would see but also at what you would encounter if you allow yourself to be immersed in your life's story. As you read this book and mix with humanity, you will see that there are a great many people that are handicapped. Some of the handicaps are visibly. Other are not so visible. A great many people may need someone like you to reach out and share yourself with them. Help someone open the door to his or her full potential! Help them not feel awkward or uncomfortable when they share a story or a joke. It may not be funny to you, but laugh anyway, or at least smile. There is no tax or charge. The People of the First Light by Betty Raymond Gubler Pdf

Two families, the Michauds and the Gauvins, along with their Abenaki guides, leave Canada and settle in the English village of Compton, Maine. The Gauvins, eager to become more socially accepted, convert from Catholicism to Protestantism and begin to look down on the Michauds as well as the Abenakis who have been converted to Catholicism by Jesuit priests. When some of the rowdy settlers burn down the Gauvins home, the Gauvins go to live with the Abenakis. (Abenaki means "the people of the first light" or "the people first to see the sun rise.") The parents return to Canada, whereas their son Francois and his young wife, Maria-Claire Gauvin, continue to live with the Indians. Francois, a coureur de bois, becomes involved in a reckless life of drinking and carousing, causing Maria and the Abenakis to lose their respect for him. Agawam, a widow and spiritual leader of the tribe, teaches Maria the healing uses of herbs. He also saves the life of Francois when Francois is ill with pneumonia. Maria takes her young daughter Jennie to visit her relatives in Compton (a fictional name). Just before Maria dies in childbirth, she gives Jennie to her friend Wiyanna. When Jennie becomes a lovely young woman, her English relatives, with whom she spends the winters, want her to stay with them and plan for her to marry the widowed minister, Gideon Hughes, whom Jennie detests. Jennie is in love with Cognawescu, the chief's son, and wants to return to her Indian family. Nevertheless, making her feel unaccepted by her own people and fearing she will end up marrying an Indian, the Gauvins tell Jennie that she needs to accept the offer of the arrogant Gideon Hughes, who insists that she marry him in order for her to become a respectable White woman and that she must no longer visit her "heathen" Abenaki friends. Read the story to find out what happens to Jennie and to learn a lot about the relations between the Abenakis, the French, and the English during the 1700s.
