WHO-UNAIDS Guidelines for Standard HIV Isolation and Characterization Procedures by Anonim Pdf

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is characterized by extremely high variability resulting in the emergence of widely divergent viral strains in diverse geographical locations and different populations. HIV strains can also vary significantly with regard to their biological and immunological properties, which may have important implications for clinical aspects of HIV infection, diagnostics, treatment, and the development of effective HIV vaccines. It is therefore important to develop appropriate laboratory technologies and capacities for systematic collection and detailed characterization of globally prevalent HIV-1 strains. This second edition contains the latest information and recommendations with regard to standard procedures for HIV isolation and its genetic, biological, and immunological characterization with a special emphasis on their applicability in HIV vaccine-related research. The laboratory methods described in these guidelines were intensively validated through various collaborative studies conducted in the framework of the WHO-UNAIDS Network for HIV Isolation and Characterization.

Innovations in Antiviral Development and the Detection of Virus Infections by Timothy Block,Richard Crowell,Mark Dennison,Donald L. Jungkind,Lori R. Walsh Pdf

THE ERA OF ANTIVIRALS Introduction Although there are more than one hundred medically useful antibiotics and fungicides, there are only seven compounds licensed for use as antiviral agents, in the USA. Some of these (acyclovir and ganciclovir) are actually derivatives of each other, making the number of new discoveries even smaller. Moreover, most of these agents are of only limited therapeutic value and have substantial toxicity. It has been more than 100 years ago since Pasteur studied rabies virus (2) and Rous (4) showed that a small filterable agent (not bacteria) caused disease (sarcoma) in chickens. It was nearly 100 years ago that yellow fever virus, the first recognized human pathogenic virus, was unambiguously associated with disease (3). Enteroviruses were cultured for the first time nearly 50 years ago (1). Why then has effective chemotherapy against viruses lagged behind that of other microorganisms? Viruses are often difficult to grow and image. However, with the dynamic advances in molecular biology and increased sophistication in tissue culture, the field of virology has blossomed and resulted in improved methods for detection of virus infection. The use of viruses as models of gene regulation and replication has also resulted in a massive accumulation of information.

Advancing Prion Science by Institute of Medicine,Medical Follow-up Agency,Committee on Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies: Assessment of Relevant Science Pdf

In Advancing Prion Science, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies Assessment of Relevant Science recommends priorities for research and investment to the Department of Defense's National Prion Research Program (NPRP). Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), also called prion diseases, are invariably fatal neurodegenerative infectious diseases that include bovine spongiform encephalopathy (commonly called mad cow disease), chronic wasting disease, scrapie, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. To develop antemortem diagnostics or therapies for TSEs, the committee concludes that NPRP should invest in basic research specifically to elucidate the structural features of prions, the molecular mechanisms of prion replication, the mechanisms of TSE pathogenesis, and the physiological function of prions' normal cellular isoform. Advancing Prion Science provides the first comprehensive reference on present knowledge about all aspects of TSEsâ€"from basic science to the U.S. research infrastructure, from diagnostics to surveillance, and from prevention to treatment.
